View Full Version : Bakelite handle injector in an ultrasonic bad idea?

Just bought an injector razor, one of the butterscotch bakelite handled ones. I usually run my razors in my ultrasonic with 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar to clean them (scrubbing with a brush for the tough gunk of course). I sterilize them by soaking in 70% isopropyl over night.
I'm a little concerned as to the constitution of the bakelite handle, but moreso the glue that holds it on. Would I be better off with a vinegar soak and brush scrubbing? Its not very dirty, but there are a lot of nooks and crannies that may be hard to get with a brush.

I usually take a cup and fill it with pure Scrubbing Bubbles and let the razor soak in it. You would be amazed how clean it gets. Then throughly rinse out the razor and you should be good to go.

I don't know about the ultrasonic cleaner, but I wouldn't soak the Bakelite handle in alcohol for any length of time. Don't ask me how I know.

I received a brass head 1950's Schick injector today and the alcohol lightly etched - took the sheen off the handle. Luckily I have a buffing wheel setup which restored the finish. In the future, I will only use dish soap and water for any plastic parts! Also, even though the spring can be lifted to open the head, extreme force is necessary..it might be better just to soak this section.
