Both the Slant and the Gem in reviews are told to give the closest performance to a straight razor shave. Which does work better for you?

Thanks.

Always thought the Slant was the ultimate DE razor :001_rolle

For me between those two choices I would say GEM ..but use both regularly. The GEN took a bit to learn, but once it works it is very good. The slants aren't "bad", just I don't see a big difference between a slant and a regular DE ...

It might still be. However, norton appears to have a preference for SE razors.

Right.

An oversight of mine. Better: "Always thought the Slant was the ultimate single blade razor".

Given the choice of the GEM or the Slant, I will take the GEM. The Slant shaves fine, but if these are my only two choices.... I'll take the SE.

No such thing as the ultimate razor - YMMV. What I find ironic is that in this thread, a user with the handle 'slantman' states his preference for the GEM.

I find the Slant more comfortable. Plus you have dozens of choices of inexpensive blades to buy. I feel that with a SE, your blade options are limited.

It seems that if you live in Europe, you have no option at all (beside importing such blades from USA, I mean).

Well, you do have some blade choices with the SE. Maybe there aren't so many because there is such a clear winner.

Same here. Bought & sold two slants and a Sledgehammer. Got very close but also somewhat harsh shaves. Right now I'm using my GEMs more than ever.

I've never felt the need to try a Slant. The Gem's are such superb shavers.:001_smile

I'm trying out an older Slant someone lent me. I don't find any significant difference in performance or closeness between it and, say, a Fatboy or a Slim at a 6 or 7 setting. But maybe I'm using it wrong?

I didn't think the slant was anything special (sold mine).

While I really like my Futur, Progress and injectors, I've been using my GEMs a fair bit lately and think that these razors are the disposable blade razors that give me the best shaves and the shave that feels very similar to the shave I ge from a straight.

Ok, this thread really surprised me. Overwhelming support for the Gem. Ok, someone needs to tell me what I'm going wrong when I shave with a Gem. Harshest damn shave ever! I used the Ted Pellas and all but never could get a good shave. Gave up.

I agree with the previous posts regarding a slant not being that much different from a Fatboy. Particularly if you use the Gillette slide technique - you're pretty much doing a poor man's slant. However, I just like the way the slant feels on my face. The guard/bar on a Gillette just never felt right on my face. The slant was and is perfection for me.

Ok, maybe I need to dig out my Gem G-bar and give it another go before I post it up in the BST forum.

BAM! spotted your problem. Get a 1912. The two are very different.

I like both. I used an open comb Micromatic the other day on a few days of growth and it was shaving perfection.

The GEM does a better job overall. I have a pre-war Pomco Slant that's in the rotation, and it gives a good/great shave. I still like the SE better.

:mad2::a31::cursing: It's always something with you people. I think you're all on the take. Trying to tempt me to buy another razor. I won't stand for it...I won't...eBay?....BST? Ok, who's got a nice 1912 for me?

The "streamline" Ever-Ready is a 1912 model, isn't it? Because I've just purchased one like that showed in the picture below. Should I look for a Gem 1912? Thanks.

gem and ever-ready are the same razor your ever-ready even says 1912 on it's base plate where the handle joins it
