Do you use the normal sanding progression on an etched blade, or is there a gentler method?

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish, the etching and how extensive the pitting is. Where do you want this blade to be when you are done?

During a restore (and sometimes a simple cleaning/polish) the etching is usually the first to go, so it all depends on your priorities.

If there is tarnish across the etching, you may want to do minimal cleaning and leave it as is, or start polishing/sanding to remove the stains but the etch will most likely be gone as well.

If you sand, no matter how fine the paper, the etching will go away.

I always suggest starting with a metal polish like MAAS if you don't have much experience restoring metal.
