Any fedora wearers? If so what's your favorite style and supplier?

I had a HUGE vintage collection in college--Borsalino, Dobbs, Knox, etc. I gave most of them away to the Salvation Army a few years ago. Right now I just have one cheapo Pendleton I found at a flea market for $6. I've started to collect nice hats again, but this time I'm sticking with flat caps and newsboys.

I prefer new to vintage, so I go with Optimo out of Chicago and Art Fawcett of Vintage Silhouettes. I think they are probably the two premier hat makers in country or world for bespoke fedoras. I prefer a 2 1/2 inch brim with a crown that's not too tall, but taller than most contemporary ready made hats (Stetson, Baileys, Biltmore, etc.)

The Fedora Lounge is a great source for hat info, and a fantastic place to look for vintage hats.

I have three Akubras, one a Federation I bought new and a couple of ebay specials, the Hampton being my favourite.

I also have several vintage Dunns (an extinct British menswear chain) and a few others lying around including a rather nice stingy Stetson.

I'd say the Fed and the Hampton get the most wear, both Akubras.

Me too!

I am thinking about getting one as well. I have a long black wool coat that I plan to wear it with primarily this winter. Since I've never really worn hats, I think I will need to start somewhere that I would feel comfortable wearing it, or at least be wearing another hat anyway. I'd been wearing silly looking ski hats the last few season, so a nice hat would certainly be an improvement. Would most people recommend matching the color of the hat with the coat, if this is obvious, shoot me, I'm totally clueless. What's the deal with ribbons, and do I want one?

If I wore a hat I couldn't show off my bald shaven head. I would look really weird wearing a hat with a bald head...

I wear a Scala Outback style for the most part (http://tiny.cc/MlwJa) but I'll throw on an Orvis (http://tiny.cc/QmEEW) for a more conservative (classic) styling sometimes.

Both brown, both crushable/foldable, etc for convenience.

I'm a fan of the "outback" style because it sits a bit lower in the front.

I think you'd look just fine - they do.

I own one very nice Borsolino (vintage-the brand isn't the same since the family sold the company), three Art Fawcet customs, Stetson 10X, one Adventurebilt (everyone HAS to have one of those!), one Vintage Stetson Open Road, and two panamas from Panama Bob for summer use.

Need I say more? I like to wear hats!

Right now I alternate between an Akubra Trilby in black or vintage Churchill stingy brim in cordova.

For the future I'm looking at either a Stetson Saxon in graphite or the new Stetson Whippet in steel as a gift to myself. Maybe I'll buy both.

Just last weekend, I bought a brown Stetson Downs at Hats Unlimited in Chicago. Mine is darker than the one pictured.

I also have a dark grey Barbisio Classic that I bought in Ghent Belgium two or three years ago. Pretty similar to this one.

I have a black one I bought from Arnold Hatters Inc. in NYC. sadly, while looking for a link for you, I discovered they recently went out of business.

I have several from Art...called The Tucker, Route 66 and other I forgot....The Tucker is a 2 1/2 brim 4 1/2 "C" Crown with a 1" band....looks casual with jeans and dressy with a suit...I believe the wider bands look too dressy.

The Akubra brand is one of the best production im my opinion. Depending upon the exchange rate, is it better to order from australia with the shipping than to buy within the states.

Always glad to see fedoras get a little exposure. I believe Matt Lauer is a longtime fedora guy.

But I doubt they'll ever come back to any degree. As you know from Art's stuff and FL, the nice new ones are $$$. Even the ones that are nice and "affordable" ready mades are way pricey by many guys standards.

American Public Media did a story on Optimo Hats and it's worth listening to. Note: There are two stories here. The first is about Alana Osaki. If you don't want to listen to the story of a college student who found hope in basketball, just fast forward to the 26:00 time stamp and you'll be at the beginning of the Optimo story. Enjoy.

I have a Jaxon and two Stetsons. I prefer the Stetsons, especially the Chatham in gray. I also like the Stetson Temple in gray. The Jaxon is a good all-around hat at a low price, but still fur felt. I wear them when possible, though not in windy or foul weather. I have a Belfry 8 Panel cap for that.

My Akubra and Resistol hats are most at home in foul weather. I really can't see the point of a fur felt hat if it can't be exposed to the elements.

Of course, your pate may vary.

I have had rain pouring off mine more than once. The proper initial purchase and good care is all that is required.

Found a really SWEET dark forest green fur felt fedora today in an Antique shop I was browsing, for an exceptionally decent price.
I was trying to justify buying it to myself, and I needed some input on what colors / styles would go with a dark green hat.
Then it came to me...
If you need help justifying a buy, ask for help from the B&B Enablers!! :w00t:

Any input guys?

I'm actually about an hour north of the city, so the places I go to are northeastern IL and southeastern WI.
There are some nice "junk" type shops (meaning not the pinky in the air antique shops) but I'm sad to say that shaving gear is none too common.
I am planning to do a drive through as soon as the weather gets better of some shops in Ohio.
I keep hearing that Ohio is THE place to go.

I started wearing a Scala New Yorker a couple of months ago, but now that it's getting warmer I've picked up a couple of plaid fabric fedoras. They're cheap, but they serve the purpose till I find the straw fedora I'm looking for. I've had an Akubra Outback since I was about 17, and it has been worn in every type of weather you can think of and has held up great. It will always be my favorite. I have a Cavalry Stetson too that has been worn once. Not many occassions to wear one of those.
