Depends if you are wearing for certain occasions. But I have a few roper styles from Ariat. Justin Boots make a good boot selection.

I wear them and only recommend Lucchese or custom maker. DustinL did an apprenticeship with a custom maker and may even chime in here... Maybe a PM to him would be in order for best recommendation

Lucchese is a fantastic boot and my favorite as well. For a lot less money, my Justin Ropers are nice and comfortable.

I've usually found that an "off" brand suited me best. Justin's never seemed to fit right. I had a pair of Durango cheapies that fit wonderfully. Ahh, another classic case of YMMV. But yes, custom made/ fitted will probably be the best option.

It depends on your purpose for wearing a cowboy boot and if it involves riding. Grew up wearing boots and I've found that Justin Ropers do the best job for me, but remember that Ropers are primarily a riding boot.

For my foot, Lucchese and Justin offer two completely different fits. My Lucchese Ropers have a snug fit, much like a shoe. I can practically jump into my Justin Ropers as they have a much looser fit. The Luccheses win the show, but the Justins are like slippers.
EDIT: Also wanted to add that for me, Ropers are the best for everyday use as they'll be no adjustment in your step. Traditional "high-heel" cowboy boots take some getting used to and in my opinion are less comfortable for long wear.

Cowtown Boots are my favorite. Been wearing them for years, and they are made in USA -El Paso, Texas. Not impressed with Justin, they're kind of the "Bud Light" of boots. They've got the name that everybody knows, but the quality is lacking.

Nocona's I love
Tony Llama's I'll wear
Dan Post's are really comfortable
Ariats are surprising
Lucchese's are way nice, but rather pricey unless you are into boots
Much of this is how they feel to you too, some of my absolute favorite boots to wear for everyday are Sheplers Roughouts which are about $50...

Disclaimer: I wear boots everyday but don't use them for work (cattle, horses, hay, etc.); I have several junky boots for that
I have 2 pair of Justin Ropers and a pair of Abeline boots I've had since high school that still fit and are in great condition. I usually wear my Abelines and my dark cherry Ropers. The other pair of Ropers are brown but for some reason I don't wear them much...

Though they are hopelessly "out" in Los Angeles, I do from time to time wear them.
There is pretty much only one store that carries a full line of them out here that I have found.
The Lucchese Classics are the best I've found short of custom made.
Go anywhere that stocks a line of boots. After trying a few pairs, when you slip on the Lucchese Classics you'll just go "Oh...that's why they cost more...."
Remarkable quality and fit. Your feet don't "feel" like you're wearing boots, and they're the only ones I've tried that offer that.
But if that's too high a price point, I've also had a pair of Justin's that served me well.

I trained horses for years. Rodeo before that. Ive had lots of different brands. Right now I have a pair of Ariats with a riding heel. I like them pretty well. Im picky about boots but wont pay a fortune. Boulet arent bad. Had a couple pairs. I quit wearing Justins long ago. They wear out way too fast. Cheap IMO. Worst pair I ever had were Cowtown. Tony Llamas arent bad. A lot of real cowboys wear Rios of Mercedes. I know real cowboys that swear by them. Luccese puts you in the "Dude" category but they look dressy.

Lucchese's are definitely more about fashion than function, but I don't think any one I know that wears them would be a "Dude" because that would require the belt buckle, starched jeans, etc... :tongue_sm

Double H. Liked my first pair so much, i bought a second for my wedding.
I have a bad back and i really like that double H has a tread on the bottom, as opposed to smooth leather. I find it gives me a better footing.
Also, remember that boots are expensive but if taken care of, will last for 20 years if not longer.

It depends on the look you are after, but I prefer to stay away from the roach killers and western boots with tapered heels. Ariat boots are very fashionable and have normal heels. They spe......e in English riding boots and have some very nice dress boots. The problem you will find is that your normal dress slacks wont work with boots. You will need longer trousers so that when you sit, your pant legs don't crawl up the boot and destroy the look.

My Ariats are more the buckaroo type with a cowboy heel...not a roper heel. It has a little taper. Mine have a rawhide on the heels for spurs and tall wide tops so you can stuff you jeans down inside easily. I dont do that much though.
Most cowboys and western horsemen wear their jeans a little too long. Nothing worse than cowboy boots and short jeans.....back to the dude stuff again. LOL
As far as dress pants and cboy boots Im out. To me they are for jeans not slacks.

As has been noted, it depends a lot on why you are wearing them. I wear boots almost daily. My favorites are a pair of cheap Justin Roper Basics (all leather [like short suede], short upper, plain toe, relatively thin sole). I think they were around $56 at Rural King. I also have two other pairs of boots. One pair of black Ariat western boots (i.e., there is a stiched design on the foot and toe) and a pair of tan Tony Lama ostrich boots. The Ariats are literally more comfortable than any pair of shoes I own. And the ostrich are tough as hell -- ostrich is a super durable hide. Ariats or anything made from ostrich will cost some coin, but they are VERY nice boots. You can find cheaper ostrich boots if they are made from multiple pieces of hide on each boot. I don't see a problem with with multiple-piece boots, but some folks don't like them for status and durability reasons (I've owned some and never had an issue with durability). I have also owned and outgrown lizard, shark, and python boots. Lizard and shark are good hides. Easy to maintain and durable. I would, however, avoid snakeskin -- they require a lot of upkeep with moisturizers, and they are not very durable.

A rule of thumb for boot makers is that if it comes from the water, it's no good for boots. With that being said, shark is some of the most durable hide to be had, but it is very unpredictable from hide to hide. When building a pair of boots from shark, you may have a pair that lasts for the duration of the wearers life, or you may have a pair that spits in a couple of months. A lot of boot makers won't even offer it due to the unpredictability. The same with stingray. I think stingray hide makes some of the neatest looking boots. The hide very much resembles a man-made product called FRP board that is used in commercial kitchen application. It is covered in small little "pebbles" that are very hard on equipment and is known to break needles very fast. Stitchlines on stingray are not straight because when the needle encounters one of the pebbles, it tries to slide off the pebble into a soft spot. Thus, stitching is a very slow process. I bought two burgudy colored hides a few years ago with plans to build myself a pair. Just haven't got to it yet.
ladder44, you mention some ostrich that is pieced together. There are two reasons for that. First, most hides only yeild two vamp cuts (one pair) of full quill, and two vamp cuts of half quill. Boot makers have been known to go down into the legs and get cuts there. Since the legs are obviously smaller, it would require a splice to make one vamp cut. Secondly, with the price of hides so high, I suspect that a boot maker might want to utilize all the leather and make many splices to produce a pair of vamps. I would never recommend ostrich for anything other than dress, and would never recommend reptile of any sort. Factory boots can get away with it and that is fine, I'm not trying to knock reptile.
The most durable "dress" boot hide that is available in my opinion is french calf. And that's all it is, just cow.

I would say Lucchesse. They are great fitting, comfortable boots. Stay away from the Lucchesse 2000, as they are not as well made. I have a pair of Black Kangaroo Lucchesse from the days before they needed a designation of "classic". Once upon a time, there was just Lucchese.:001_smile

Ostrich are very nice boots. I have had a couple pairs of smooth ostrich boots. I dont care for the full quill. The only thing I would say about ostrich is you dont want to get them wet. The ostrich will likely darken and never go back to the original color. They are tough though and super soft and comfortable. I think they were the most comfortable cowboy boots I ever had.

great boots. American small shop made.
some in stock, 2-3 months for requests.
also another vote for custom made. if you have any sort of 'non standard' foot issues, cowboy boots can be torturous. but a good pair is like walking barefoot.
Luchese are terrific looking and wearing but a little pricey, like Justins as a second choice.

On the topic of Lucchese, I was speaking with them about getting my Kangaroos resoled, and they let me know that they will no longer resole any boots that are made from restricted skins anymore. So even if you bought the boot when the particular skin was not endangered/restricted, they won't resole it. Also, won't ship Kangaroo to California. Bummer for them, thank God I'm in Texas.

They have been both very comfortable and durable. You won't score any points with the big belt buckle crowd, but if you're not looking for the last word in fashion, they'll give you lots of bang for the buck.
Coincidentally, I'll be going past the Nocona boot factory tomorrow. I think they were bought out by Justin some years back. There's never much activity there anymore.

Hi I've never had them customized but have a couple pairs of Blackjacks bought from Tim's when they just opened, one's a bit too delicate for everyday wear being hornback, but the other one is a roper that is probably one of the most comfortable off the shelf boots I've owned.
Rios are great boots as well, I have a couple pairs in starred stingray & elephant, nothing fancy but really well made & comfortable, they really grow on you.
I have some older vintage Black Label Lama's for daily wear, they seem to fit my foot pretty good for a non custom boot, I tend to wear a couple pairs in french calf & elephant the most, though the "sharpest" one I think I have is a great pair in black cobra from a small custom maker in El Paso, once again, some meltonian once in a while & it only comes out when it's dry indoor stuff.
El Paso has got all kinds of custom bootmakers & really, most of them can't be beat by most of the known names; there are some real gems there.

I guess I will throw my 2 cents worth in.
Alberta Boot Company. They have odd sizing so it is better to go down there and get sized. They make the boots themselves in the back so you can get custom ones made up easy. I own several pairs in steer hide. The best thing about them is when the soles are worn out you can send them back to be re-soled. New shoes that are already broken in.

I have a couple pair of Ariat Ropers that I love. I tried Justins and a few other brands in my price range when I went looking and none of them compared in fit and comfort. If you live in the Atlanta area, Horsetown is a great place to shop.
I have a pair of kangaroo skin Lucchese boots that I got close to 15 years ago that were the most comfortable thing I had ever put on my foot, but my feet have grown a little bit since then and now they feel too tight unless I wear a nylon dress sock or no sock at all. Anyone know if there is a way to stretch the boot out a little bit so it fits? I'd hate to ruin the boot trying to do it when I could just give them to someone who may get some wear out of them, but if there's a way I would love to have my boots back. Any ideas are welcome.

I live here in Utah, and see a fair amount of boots on people. I farm and run horses so I wear boots alot. My current "go to" pair is this pair of Ariats. (http://sheplers.com/mens/ariat/030102.html) They are quite comfortable. I also agree with what everyone else has said, lots of good boots out there, but each foot fits a different cut/brand/style/material in it's own way, try some on to truly find a good fit.

I know this thread is about 3 years old, but Jabo, if you see this, I wanted to answer your question.
No Dan Post boots are made in the USA -- all in Mexico. Therefore, I wouldn't rate them all that highly. I'd rate Justin higher -- at least its USA-made models. As for Durango, I'd rank them way lower than Dan Post; those boots are made in China.
In a nutshell, I'd rate Dan Post below American-made Justin, Tony Lama, and Nocona models but WAY above made-in-China brands like Ariat, Durango, Laredo, Dingo, etc.

I'm glad this thread has resurfaced. I've been trying to learn more about the quality, and the fit of different styles and brands of boots recently, as well as where to find them. I currently have some Ariats with the square toe and walking heel, and a couple of pair of Justin ropers in deerskin and smooth ostrich. I was surprised that the Justins fit in the same size as my normal shoe size, when so many have said they need to go a 1/2 size or even a full size smaller in Justins, and my Ariats are a full size larger than my normal shoe size. The Ariats have been amazingly comfortable from the first time I put them on, but I haven't worn them very much yet, and am curious to see how they wear over time. For some perspective, the Ariats do have sort of a tennis shoe feel, rather than a regular leather shoe or boot feel, and the most comfortable boots or shoes I've ever worn were Florsheim Imperial oxford dress shoes, which of course are no longer available and what they make now doesn't come close. They molded to the shape of my feet after a few months and I could wear them all day and night and my feet never got tired of them.

Oh nuts Randy...here I am spending your money again. I had a thing for boots for awhile. Sort of gave me grief here in Los Angeles where they are not commonly worn anymore (other than by horse owners). Had to stop wearing them due to a heel problem.
If you slip on a pair of Lucchesse Classics, you won't think about any other boots as far as fit and comfort. Incredible. I like the company too. Italian Texans in El Paso!

Yeah, I know and I feel bad about it. But on stuff I have a direct and fantastic experience with...
Going back a few years, i wore Justin's, and Dan Post. For whatever reason, when I got my tax refund one year, I decided to splurge on some new boots. Went to one of the few places left in LA that sells a wide selection. Tried some on. Due to wearing a large size (13), choices were few. But salesman finally said, "well, it's more money, but we do have these Luccesse Classics in a 13" It wasn't a bad looking boot so I said "sure, lets try them."
Slid them on and wondered why or how the F anybody else could even bother to compete with a boot that felt that good. It was insane. Might as well have been a fuzzy pair of slippers the way they felt. I'm gushing at this point, but it is one of those experiences I remember like it happened yesterday. This was probably 12 years ago or so.

I have a closet full. I wear Lucchesse (black ostrich, black cherry goat) with suits all the time. Justin ropers with jeans are like slippers

Lucchese Classics are quite nice, but I prefer Stallions. Also, a small shop in Austin, Heritage Boots, makes and sells some very nice boots.

I own two pairs
Tony Lama (USA made) full quill ostrich in black. they dont get much use but i've owned them for years and they still look brand new. wear em mostly when i dress up, which is why they don't get much use. 2nd most comfortable piece of footwear I own.
Dan Post python skin. they are darn near wore out. snake skin turns a light shade of yellow if you dont condition them with a leather conditioner or reptile leather conditioner. need to have a full resole as well. I don't wear them much in the winter but during the summer all the time.

I used to be a Nocona fan, but since I bought Luchesse's I really love the feel and fit of them.

I buy my oldest son and wife Justin Ropers, but I buy myself Olathe "Mule Skinners" with the 2 3/4 inch drop heel and rounded toe. I have two pair of the Olathe boots one is over 12 years old and has been resoled a couple times and the other I bought for my wedding in August of 2008, and both are in excellent shape.

I own a pair of lucchese 1883s. They feel so good when wearing them. I went to a boot store looking to buy any boot. I tried on tons in every style/color/toe etc. This is the one I settled on.

Just dropped off my Luchesse Kangaroos at the store to be sent back for a full restore. Should come back with a new sole, and new lining. Mine are some of the last ones made when Luchesse was just Lechesse. There used to be a time when there was no such thing as classic...

Anyone wear these? Any brand you can recommend?
Some on, American made by Mason Shoes back in the early 80's. They have had the last resole probably. Not sure what I will do when they are gone but after 30 years they don't owe me anything. Sadly the company no longer makes shoes.

Mr5x5, did you intend to post a photo? If so, then it seems your pic and jrward2's pic got eaten up!

My bad . . . the way you phrased your original post, especially when you said, "This is the one I settled on," made me think you had posted (or at least tried to post) a picture.

My favorite pair that I have are my Loveless custom boots. They are in Oklahoma City. More comfortable than any pair of shoes you can buy!! Gorgeous workmanship!
I also love my Rodney Ammons! Spectacular!

I have a pair of Ariat rubber sole square toe boots that I love. They were my first pair, bought a little over a year ago. I got a pair of Nacona ostrich boots ca.1989 handed down to me a few months back. They're both awesome boots, but the Ariats are a little more versatile. The rubber sole doesn't soak with water when the ground is wet and they're a little more durable. Both are equally comfortable, but feel a little different.

I love my Lucchese's. I also have other brands. If you have large calves, Lucchese may not work for you unless you go custom. They are incredibly comfortable however.
