Help please with my eveready!

In need of help please, thought tonight to skip trying out a different gilette and opted for a try of my eveready single blade razor and 2 things happened-after 2 passess hardly any whiskers were cut and how do you get under your nose! i had to re lather up and get a gillette out as the razor seemed to cut through nothing, the blades i got are from a on line wet shaving store designed for shaving but a useless shave, am i using the razor wrong or are the blades that bad, really dissapointed as i have wanted to try this razor now for a while:001_huh:

To acquire the proper blade angle for shaving, the razor's head is usually almost flat against your skin. Due to the size of the razor's head, a downward stroke is difficult beneath your nose. Some early instructions suggested a diagonal stroke beneath each nostil. It is unusual for an SE to not cut at all.

Okay, first a dumb question. Are you certain the blade was installed correctly? (Wouldn't be the first time it wasn't :wink:)

It would also be extremely helpful if we knew exactly what blades you had purchased.

I have to agree, it's odd to have it not cut at all. Most beginner stories with a SE are the opposite: they had a bloodbath. :lol:

hate to say it but you must be doing something wrong, probably the angle, when you start with a SE the first thing I noticed was the sound of the whiskers being chopped on the first stroke

The Ever Ready 1912 uses a different angle then a DE. Click here is a diagram:

Use example #3 for the 1912. To get under the nose, you have to do an East-West pass.

You can also use your free hand to physically push your nose out of the way. You can also try tucking your upper lip downward.

I found with a 1912, I simply inverted the razor and went ATG. But I also was only shaving about 3/8 of an inch between my nose and my mustache (for a proper seal with a scuba mask). Actually, I was able (almost) to do it upright. Sort of a Gillette slide on an angle (okay, an Ever Ready slide in that case :biggrin:).

thats a 1924 and the head design is not the same.

+1 on the what blades question.

There was a fellow who posted a few days ago. He tried some of the hardware store blades (meant for scraping paint and not shaving with). It was so dull that it just slid over his whiskers without cutting a thing.

I was led to believe the angle on both the 1924 and 1912 was the same. Am I mistaken?

First off many thanks for the replies, the blades i am using have no name on them they came in a bag with a label on it saying "lqqks quality hair accessaries" nothing on the blade, i am going to try again with the angle shown in the instructions that was posted and see how i get on and also i can get some gem blades so it may be worth me buying some and see how they compare, i will try a different blade as well in case the one i am using is blunt, believe me when i say that last night when i shaved hardly no hair came off my face so i am tending to think the blades or blade is no good, thanks again i will take all on board when i have a shave.

Every report of those on the board indicates they are total garbage. They are not designed at all for shaving, they are super dull!! I am not sure why Shoebox Shave Shop bothers to sell them, since none of the SE veterans would bother to use them.

He does offer the following disclaimer:


These budget blades fit GEM-type single-edge razors.

Made for shaving and not for lab work.

Definitely not as good as our other single edge blades but inexpensive and worth a try. If they work out for you, you save big time.

I am also not sure why he is making the shaving/lab work distinction, as I was under the impression that lab work required the sharpest of blades.

Anyway, get thee to Walgreens/ CVS immediately, and buy some of the Gem blades. You will experience a world of difference!!

Be sure to get the stainless, PTFE coated, GEMs. They may not say PTFE but instead say stainless "super".

The non-stainless will rust badly after a single use -- but that first use should not be too bad.

Keep us updated with your results when the new blades arrive. Gems provide excellent shaves, provided you handle them with care, and don't attempt to speed shave.

Speed Shaving isn't a very good idea with a DE razor either, but the thinner flexible blade means the razor may just float over obstructions. The SE blade being much thicker will just mow down anything in it's way. OUCH! :angry:
