Hello everyone. I now have a membership @ Planet Fitness, yay. I am one of those people who enjoy exercise. My goal is to look and feel better. I am in it for the health benifits and enjoyment, not to impres everyone and get looked at. :) I went there today with the iPod and got on the treadmill. I was walking and jammin' @3MPH and the next thing I know 45min had gone by. I had my eyes closed and the world around me did not exist. I am not sure why I enjoy exercise so much but I do. What are your thoughts on exercise and such? What do you do at the gym?

I've never had great access to a gym. I have enjoyed walking my whole life and feel its a wonderful way to stay fit. I think an effective regimen needs to be low (or no) cost, enjoyable, and easy to do. What could be better than walking? One thing I've never understood are the folks who drive to the high school and walk circles around the track. To me, that takes all the fun out of it!

+1 I walk pretty much everywhere I go and love it. Where the gym never held as much appeal to me, I find walking where I want to go very zen.

For me the controlled environment of the gym works better for me. Those who know me know that I am visually impaired thus the gym can be safer for me. I can be on the bike, treadmill, or eliptical and close my eyes and get lost in the music and exercise. If I walk around the neighborhood I have to use my ears to make up for my eyes so therefor I am on the lookout. In the gym I can bypass some varibles. I do not have to worry about the weather being too hot to walk or to cold and this is not costing me anything.

My typical athletic/training activities are: Running, swimming, surfing, and paddling outrigger canoes. I do some weight training and swiss ball work mostly for core development.
I'm usually in the gym for a couple hours @ 3x a week to: Run on a hampster wheel, do some kind of tabata routine, and swim laps in the pool. The gym activities and the paddling are very zen like. It helps me bring a clear focus to the day even on very busy days when I might otherwise get totally frazzeled. It definitely keeps me from sweating the small stuff. Finishing off a workout in the gym with laps in a pool is great for this.
I'm really lucky to have access to the Student Life Center at UH Hilo (http://mharing.wordpress.com/2009/05/04/uh-hilos-student-life-center/).
