View Full Version : Week of Injectors!

I'm going for a week of Injector shaves. Open to all Injector types, Schick, Pal, or others.
I'm no Injector expert, the two I currently own are a bakelite handled Schick that came in a box dated 1942 and a plastic handled model I'm guessing is from the 50's.
Photos encouraged, and I'm eager to hear from those who haven't tried an Injector yet, or haven't used them for some time.

Ok, I am in. I have a Schick Hydro-Magic. I will start this "challenge" tomorrow. :tongue_sm:tongue_sm
I recently picked up a NOS Pal injector cartridge with 20 blades in it. Curious to know how those will shave, but will spend the first few days using my Rite-Aid brand Injector blades. :001_tongu
P.S. I have only used my injector 2-3 times.

I suppose I'm in by default, as my shaving rotation is down to two razors, both Injectors.

Injector day one:
White handled Injector
Prairie Creations Spiced Rum soap
ASR blade from Post Exchange
Tweezerman Brush
Three passes, BBS, one weeper on the chin that required a touch of the styptic pencil. Finished with Barbasol Pacific Rush aftershave. Still enjoying the menthol blast as I post.
This is going to be a boring week of great shaves.

I'm in...2 shaves...Very good and fast...Since joining this site I enjoy taking my time shaving...My only complaint with Injectors is that they get the job done so fast!

-Schick Eversharp Hydro-Magic w/ Rite Aid Blade
-European Palmolive SC
-Penworks 22mm Finest Badger
-Witch Hazel
-Aqua Velva Ice Blue
I did two passes, WTG, and XTG, with some minor touch ups, and I have a very nice, close, comfortable shave. No nicks, or weepers either.
My Injector does a great job, it's only flaw (if you want to call it that) is that it feels so much like a cartridge razor. That makes it too boring to shave with to be my daily shaver.
This was also the first time I have used the Palmolive SC, and I am very impressed, a rich thick cushioning lather, and a nice clean scent to boot. It's not the awesome smell of Erasmic, but it gets the job done.

Ok, since today officially starts the Weak of Schickness, I started with an M-2 Adjustable by Schick, lathered up some of the Kent branded MWF with my beehive. Blade is from Meijers (looks like Pella/EMS re-branded). Must be my day for rebrands. Finished with WH & AV.
Four passes & BBS, as always with this razor. I plan on moving the blade around a little, between my small collection of injectors.

This week's shave fell into line when I bought a minty Type F Schick (with ultra-cool art deco case) on Saturday.
Weekends are for experimenting (thanks to the time they allow the skin to heal), so I went at it on Sunday.
It was my first shave with an injector (although I already have a couple of Type G Schicks).
I put in a fresh Schick (Chinese) blade and had a WONDERFUL shave on Sunday. I was really impressed because the first use of a blade usually is a bit rough. It was one of the best shaves I ever had, comfy and smooth. I even had my wife run her hand across my neck (although she was less impressed than I was, truth be told).
This morning (Monday) I was running very, very late for work and instead of grabbing the Gillette Slim set on 1, for a fast, but safe shave, I went for it with the Schick.
Since I wear a beard I only shave my neck.
The result? Half my neck is enjoying a smooth, wonderful shave. The other half hurts like hell, but, all things considered, it could have been much worse.
The real test will be if I get any ingrown hairs.
So, half a brilliant shave and half a bit red, with some definite tender spots.
Still, the Schick was a real joy. The type F is a handsome razor (aluminum handle and partially gold head) and has more heft and substance than the type G.
It looks like a keeper.
I look forward to tomorrow's normal slow-speed shave, which I suspect will be much better.
I would like to think there is a lesson in there somewhere, but, being chronically busy with work, I somehow doubt it. The Schick was so smooth that I think I got off easy.

Used a Schick G8 ribbed handled injector today for the first time. Not sure what drugstore blade I used. Way more aggressive than my Revere injector. Good smooth shave after 2 passes that rivals my Monday morning DE shave with a Feather blade(I do not shave on the weekends). Curious to see how many shaves I get out of the blade and how the razor and blade treat me on a daily basis.
My setup:
AOS pre-shave oil
AOS unscented
AOS AS Balm
Unknown vintage ivory (real) handle badger brush
Alcatraz Island metal cup
G8 Schick Injector
Drugstore blade

Shave two on the same blade, same razor. Prairie Creations Bay Rum, lathered up just fine with a humble VDH boar brush (that's some amazing soap!). Three passes, no damage, except to the target. Got one little spot on the neck that keeps things from being BBS.
Just to keep things from being completely boring, had my first go with alum after the shave. A little sting, but man, my face feels good.
I don't think I'll get as much mileage out of the ASR blades as I do with the Schick branded Chinese ones. We'll see.

The Injector is way too easy to use!!
I wonder about the durability of the Injector blades I got from Rite Aid. This is shave 4 on this blade, and it shows no signs of being dull yet. I use DE blades for a max of 4 shaves. :001_unsur
In summary, Injectors are great!!

My late start to injector week didn't start off so well. I did four passes this morning with my Personna (using C.O. Bigelow cream) and it sounded like it was really mowing down hair each pass, but I still had a lot of stubble left after the fourth pass and had to clean up with my Trac II because I was running late. Where it took the hair off, the Personna did a great job but it was taking forever.
I've heard that this is a somewhat mild razor, but that seems excessive; I should note that my results this morning are consistent with the other times I've used the injector so far. I've been using the NOS Personna 74 blades that came with my razor and I'm on my third one, which works out to be about ten shaves with the razor (one blade came out of the package with a large nick in it so I tossed it). I'm going to try a different make of blade for the rest of the week before I come to a final conclusion about this razor.

Those NOS blades might have oxidized to the point where the edges are shot. Do give another blade a try, and if you still hate the razor, BST is your friend.

Thanks, that confirms what I was suspecting. I wanted to make sure that ruled out the possibility of a single bad blade sneaking into the pack before I switched to a new pack blades. I'll swing by the drug store at lunch and pick up a fresh set. I really do like the razor; it's much easier to use than my DE razor when I'm tired or in a hurry. Mornings aren't my strong suit so I need all the help I can get to avoid shaving my nose off.

For Tuesday I switched the modern blade to this old Repeater. Took some fiddling to do it but it worked. The square handle is a bit awkward at first, and the angle is different. But it gave a decent shave , not as easy as the Adjustable though.

Well I'm a little ahead as I was motivated from Topgumbys original post. I am going to continue to use it for awhile as I think I'm getting nice shaves with the injector now. I'm on shave #5 & I didn't shave yesterday cause 24 hours after the shave it felt like 5 o'clock shadow. The stubble today feels like just one days worth. I've been mixing it up with creams & soaps. All have worked well with my injector. I'm again looking forward to shaving this morning using the same blade I started with. I have found that I must apply a little more pressure due to the light weight of my injector. Just a little more though!
I do use a 4 pass method that's BBS except for the two round patches next to my Adam's apple. I think that this is a common problem spot along with the underside of the jaw line. I've yet to find a razor or blade combo that easily masters these two spots for me.
Sorry if the picture is just too strange, I was having some fun with the software :001_tongu

I would put it past the maximum setting on any Gillette adjustable. Maybe a 10 or 11? The G type injectors are pretty aggressive, and will reward you with a stellar shave - as long as you remember the NO PRESSURE rule. They are light, so that is pretty easy to accomplish. I shaved at about 6 last night, and i am just now starting to get a little roughness around my jawline when I rub against the grain. I'll throw in a different one tonight. Probably my blue G66.

Try a slightly more acute angle, and possibly a little Gillette Slide action. I find these injector razors really prefer to be as flat to the face as possible to get a really close, comfortable shave. Increasing the gap between head and face generally scrapes more and increases irritation, especially with these thicker blade types. (Str8's included.)

Tried the Schick (G I think) and a NOS Schick blade, Valobra and Jason Aloe Vera Gel. Better than the Pal experiment. The result after 2 passes was reasonable .Not as good as TRAC II, or DE (that would have been BBS :001_tongu), but I am glad it was better. Hope the new Schick blades I have ordered will improve things further.

Well, it seems like injector week is not to be for me. I bought a new pack of blades at CVS today and when I went to load my razor the pack promptly broke apart; when I put it back together, it refused to load anything into the razor in anything resembling a correct blade alignment. I loaded another blade from the original Personna pack and for some reason it too decided to go in all cockeyed... but I ran out of blades in the old pack to try and straighten things out. I guess I'll cheer you all on from the sidelines.

That's not hopeless, load the new CVS blades into the old injector and use that to load the razor. Just feed them in reverse from normal loading and press the spring carrier in the old injector pack down with a small screwdriver.

Good idea, I'm glad you pointed that out. I was able to feed the new CVS blades into the old injector with no problems.
On a side note, it was taking a lot of force to feed a blade into the razor, which seemed unusual; from what I remember about my dad's old razor, it should have been very easy. Well, it turns out that the coating on the NOS Personna blades had gotten sticky over the years and was gumming everything up. After running a clean new blade through the razor to clear out the old oil goop, I'm back in business.

Today I put in my 1950-1953 G1 (looked it up) a PAL blade from 1950-1955, and it worked! In the PAL injector razor this blade did not cut it, but in my usual 2 passes I came close to the result of DE and TRAC II. I am very glad now to have some injectors (and at least 1200 old PAL hollow ground injector blades :wink2:). Will continue with this combo and Valobra (soap for the week).

-Schick Eversharp Hydro-Magic w/ Rite Aid Blade
-VDH Deluxe
-Penworks 22mm Finest Badger
-Witch Hazel
-Aqua Velva Ice Blue
This day was a disaster. lol. :tongue_sm
I think I am making Wendesdays VDH day. :thumbup1:
VDH whipped up a great lather, and I did my first pass with the injector. It felt a little rough, so I finished the pass, and decided to install a new blade.
I thought I would use a vintage Pal blade, which are in a 100% plastic injector case (even the key is plastic). I broke the key off the bank while trying to install the blade.
ARGH!!
Tried with my Rite Aid Personna Injector cartridge, blade still wouldn't go in.
I decided to finish off the shave with my Feather Portable.
Anyway, clearly my Hydro-Magic is a little difficult to load. There are prongs that stick down into the blade to prevent it from falling out when the mechanism is open for cleaning. I had to fiddle around with the lever, having it just slightly open to successfully load the blade.
Since I know have a new blade loaded, tomorrow will be back to normal.

Day two of injector week went much better for me than the first shave. Here's today's gear list, which is the same as yesterday's except for the blade and will be the same the rest of the week:
Personna injector
CVS blade
Bigelow (Proraso) cream
Well-broken in generic boar brush
Witch hazel for post-shave
The fresh blade made a huge difference; I was able to get a pretty decent shave overall in three passes with deadly smoothness on parts of my face. I think my shave was uneven more because of poor technique on my part than any problem with the razor or blade. It's hard to resist the temptation to swipe away with long strokes like you can use with a cartridge razor, which meant I wasn't always using the optimal blade angle and probably used more pressure in spots than I really should have. I wound up with very slight irritation that cooled off as soon as I splashed it with some witch hazel. Shorter strokes and paying closer attention to blade angle should take care of that.
I'm beginning to understand why people like these razors so much...

Just found this thread. Shaved with my I-model schick injector on saturday, and monday, and will do again for today and the rest of the week. I found that the injector really mows down the stubble and leaves my face smooth. Even with with two days worth of growth I only had to do a single pass with a little touch-up on my neck, and I only had a couple of weepers after using it the first time on saturday. You really need to go with light pressure with this razor or it will bite you. In a way it really reminded me of an early cartridge razor.

See, that would be a shame to get ripped off on shipping charges for such mild-reputed shavers, right? Well I checked drugstore.com for these Chinese Schick you're all referring to (seems like a good starter's choice if I read correctly...) and they wanna make me pay 50$ for shipping:lol::lol::lol: Ludicrous!

Omega Boar
Blue Handle G66
Schick Injector (chinese)
Osage Rub
Nivea Cooling
Tiny splash of Aqua Velva
I don't know what it is about that G66, but it is uber-aggressive. I think it is the mottled metal gives less glide or something. If you put too much pressure, she can be a cruel mistress. Use just the right touch though, and she will reward you with a face that is facesturbatable for like 18 hours.

I picked up Rite Aid blades for the new G1 (thanks for the PIF, Lucky!) - and gave one a try. The shave was decidedly less comfortable than my previous two where I used a vintage Schick/Krona blade. Good shave, but I had to work for it.
I guess there is a real difference in these SE blades - as with DE's and blades for GEMs. So... Rite Aid = bad?
Should I stick with and seek out "vintage" injector blades?

Well, since yesterday's injector shave held up until about 8:00 PM, I decided to keep going with injector week. This morning's shave was the third of injector week for me, same setup as yesterday:
Personna injector
CVS blade
Bigelow cream
Well-broken in boar brush
Witch hazel for post-shave
Another deadly smooth shave from the Personna/CVS combo: four passes to get there, with just two tiny nicks that closed during my final cold water rinse. I'm still getting used to the razor, so we'll see what happens with the next couple of shaves.
I like this razor more every shave and I'm definitely getting better with it. I'd like to reduce the number of passes needed to get to DFS/BBS territory, but that may just be the nature of this razor.
EDIT: I just went to the restroom and happened to notice that my face looks a little blotchy and irritated, which it didn't right after my shave. I suspect that I may be getting too close of a shave, so I'll have to back off on the number of passes tomorrow or switch razors until the irritation resolves.

Thursday selected the M-2 Adjustable, still on the same blade (EMS clone from Meijers Shifty Acres). Tabac stirred up with a Rooney 1/1. 4 passes & 1/2 for touch ups result in yet another great (too easy ?) Injector shave. No sting from the alum says it was a good one also. Finished off with some Florida Water.

I didn't even realize I've been participating in a week of Injectors, but that has been my shaves all week. :001_rolle
Sunday was Provence Sante, SR 3118, Type E, Pella Blade, Mandom!
Monday was PS, Boreal 976 boar, Type E, Pella blade, WH, Feather Kanwa
Wednesday was PS, SR 3118, Type L regular handle, Pella blade, Nivea
Today: KMF Mint brushless, Type L regular handle, Pella blade, Feather Kanwa
I am trying to get through all my soap refill pucks. Provence Sante is the current one in the dish I am working through, but I had a quickie 2 pass shave this morning as I was running late. One thing I love about the injectors is the number of shaves I get from these blades - seems like they go a long, long time.

The New blade and change from the Hydromagic resulted in a great shave - one small nick. (thus the alum).

Day 4 was a very Tea Tree shave.
Same black-handled Schick, same Chinese Schick blade.
The Body Shop Tea Tree foaming face wash in the shower, EO Shave Foam Tea Tree & Lemon for the shave, Thayers After Shave Witch Hazel splash, and The Body Shop Tea Tree Mattifying Moisturizer to finish.
A little sting with the splash, but a very smooth nice finish. That EO Shave Foam is really interesting stuff. Keeps lubricating - after the first pass just wet your fingers and rub up a nice thin coat of slick stuff all over again.

Guidance, please - o experienced injectees.
.
I would go to Drugstore.com and buy the Schick branded chinese blades. IMHO, they are far superior to the CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens blades. You can also get them from Alice.com, and the shipping is free. You have to buy 6 at a time though. BTW, really nice butterscotch combo. Photo just pops!

Well, day three and four were morning shaves. Yesterday I was too busy grilling a birthday dinner in a windstorm and was just too tired. The day before I was caught up in the party prep and it was too late to shave by the time I thought about it.
One great thing about the morning shave with the Injector is that I get to enjoy the results all day at work. The evening shave loses the BBS edge by about noon for me.
The I swapped blades out, used PC Old Spice for day three and Tabac for day four. Both outstanding shaves, although the time pressure of having to get ready for work was there. No way I could have done as well with my beloved 40's SS or Red Tip.
I'll use the 1942 Butterscotch handle tonight.

4th day with a Type G and drugstore blade.
This is the first time (week) I've used a Type G. With a little adjustment to pressure and technique I am getting unbelievable close and smooth shaves.
The blade is holding well after 4 days of 2 a day passes.
Glad this thread was started or the razor would still be collecting dust!

5th, and final day of The Week of Injectors:
-Proraso Pre/Post (used as pre-shave)
-Schick Eversharp Hydro-Magic w/ one shave old Rite Aid Blade
-Dalan D'Men Energetic SC
-Omega #49 Boar
-Witch Hazel
-Aqua Velva Ice Blue
Another awesome Injector shave today. The Injector is consistent, and easy to use. I guess this also makes it rather boring.:lol:
Dalan D'Men is a newer shaving cream from Turkey. It available in three scents. I have been testing it for about 4 shaves, and I like it quite a bit. It has very nice scents, and whips up a nice lather with a brush. The Energetic is supposed to have Menthol, and to me smells fruity, reminiscent of Fruit Stripe Gum (Yummy!!)
Here is my discussion thread for Dalan D'Men:

Friday went basic, using an E2 type Schick (the one with the swing away spring for cleaning). Lather applied with a vintage Simpson's Butterscotch and the Czars Special Halloween soap from Mama Bear. Because of it's mildness this makes it easy to get a very quick shave , not as close as the adjustables but easy to get DFS.

Day five was the Butterscotch handle, Delong Badger brush and vintage Old Spice soap.
For some reason I find there is a difference between Injectors of the same model using the same blade. The Butterscotch is a much more aggressive razor, but I think it could be as simple as the neck being bent to a different angle.
Also discovered I have three Injectors...:blushing: I hate losing track of razors.
Great week, and on a practical level this could go on 'til they plant me and I'd have nothing to complain about, but I hear an open comb Gillette calling.
I'd say anybody who wet shaves with vintage stuff owes himself a test drive with an Injector. They might be ugly ducks, but they sure work well.

I admit it, I bailed out because I missed my DE. I love the close shaves I get with my injector, but it's so light I tend to use more pressure and thus get more irritation. Time and practice will probably take care of that issue so I'll keep the injector around for the occasions I need a deadly smooth shave that lasts a long time.

four out of the last six days with injectors... very good shaves (except for a less-than-smooth encounter with a Rite Aid blade)... but not a whole lot of fun.
I unleashed my 46-47 Aristocrat this morning... the shave took a little longer, but was just as good as any with the injectors. And more fun!
But the injectors are here to stay, for the occasional place in the rotation along with the Gems and Ever-Ready SEs.
Thanks, gents, for introducing me to the World of Injectors!

I, too, bailed on the injector today, as I had a Straight that I'd finished cleaning up and honing, and just had to give it a try... :)

I thought of starting a new thread, but decided to put a "me too" on this older one.
My last 10 shaves have been with a rotation of Injectors, G1 (5 shaves), L1 (3) and I2 (2). Yes, I've actually been marking off the number of shaves to see how long the CVS blades will last; I'm hoping for at least 7 shaves per blade.
Quality of shaves, outstanding. So far, these are giving me the best results on my neck that I've had.* As others have said, Injectors are so easy to use that it almost feels like cheating. Comparing the three, when you look at the blade exposure, there are noticeable differences, but for me this doesn't seem to make much difference in the actual shave. I like the long handle on the L1, but for reasons that are hard to define, I think the G1 suits me best.
The CVS blades work well, but yes, I do have to do some finagling to load the blades from their junky magazine, and treat it carefully so it won't fall apart. I've also bought some EMS and Chinese Schick blades.
No intention of abandoning my DE and SE razors, in fact I still have a few in my arsenal that I need to try. Whatever rotation I end up with, though, it's definitely going to have to include Injectors, and I think that they will be my go-to shave when I'm pressed for time. I usually take or three passes even with these, but they are the closest I've come to getting an acceptable shave with a single pass, and that includes cartridges.
*I didn't mean that I shave only my neck. I shave my whole face, but the neck has been a problem area.

I managed to get one useable Lady Eversharp M20 (Hydromagic) as the sole bidder on a lot of three. The Meijer store down the road sells ASR 15-blade packs with the Meijer name on the card for $3.99.
The shave goes fairly quickly and easily, but not as close as I can get with certain DE blades in a Gillette adjustable.
To carry this theme any further would mean trying other injector blades, like Schicks or NOS Personna 74's, in perhaps another razor, like a Schick or PAL adjustable.
Those other blades on a limited list of options cost about three times as much as the Meijer/ASR's, and I like the shave I get with DE blades that cost less than the Meijer/ASR injectors.
