I found these two GEM razors this morning at an antique store and couldn't pass them up for $2 apiece. There is a very little rust spot on the inside of the top of the one with a metal handle. I'm hoping some of you experienced guys can help me figure out how to get rid of the rust. I'd never shaved with a single-edge razor and have only been shaving with a DE for a week. I've really enjoyed the DE razors and have yet to cut myself with them. When I tried to use one of the GEM razors today, however, the blade felt stiff and uncomfortable and I cut myself right away, so finished with the DE. I'll go to the razor forum and seek some SE shaving advice there, but wouldn't mind if someone posted some advice here. Also, does anyone know some info on these two razors? Thanks guys.

cpool, nice finds! Pop into Walgreens and get you some blades!

Neither one of them have knobs. The head opens against spring pressure, you insert a blade and snap the head closed.

Since you asked -
The silver one is a 'G-Bar' - or at least what it's referred to around here.
The rust is probably from a blade, not on the razor itself. Most GEM Blades are carbon steel rather than stainless (carbon steel is a little harder - but rusts). I would hit these with some antibacterial scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush and see how they look after that.
The one with the Black Handle is a later model Gem Junior - which IMO, would be the easier to learn shaver of the two - mostly because of the head style and angle - that gap with the barracuda looking teeth makes it easier, not more difficult, to get a good shave. The G-Bar is a good shaver too, but it may take a bit more practice because it's got the smaller head.
Do a search for GEM 1912 or Ever-ready on the forums - there are quite a few SE fans here. D.Irving79 is the resident expert - you could search for posts by him.
The idea is to put the head flat (or just off) your face. It may feel a bit strange, but if you do it right, with a quality blade, you'll hear the sound of whiskers popping.
Quality SE blades can be had for reasonable prices - Treets and PALs (both carbon and very sharp) are usually available locally. GEM makes a stainless blade that some have found locally as well. Like DEs, blade quality is very important. Don't go using paint-scraper quality blades in one of these.
Fun razors - even if you don't like the shaves now, I'd clean them up and keep them around for a bit.
Don't worry about the rust with carbon blades. I take my blade out after each shave, and pat it dry for the next use. Wish I could do that with my injectors.

Thanks for the feedback and information. I appreciate it! I've seen several mentions on the forums about scrubbing bubbles... the only scrubbing bubbles I'm aware of are the ones you clean your shower with... is that what people are referring to? Thanks again.

Since I'm just starting to recently acquire some DE & SE razors, I decided to bid on this lot of razors and an old travel set on eBay. I could tell that some of the razors looked dirty, but it looks to me that they cleaned up pretty good. I'll put what I think they are, and you experts can tell me what they really are :) Thanks
This has the entire lot:
74409
This is the old travel set, ladies Kewtie razor & blades and 2 boxes of blades:
74410
These are marked EverReady (one on left is made in England, other in NY:
74414
Three GEMs (one G Bar and 2 Micromatics?)
74415
Are these SuperSpeeds?
74416
It looks like I can't put any more pictures on this post, so I'll do a part II next... hope that's ok

On the left is an AutoStrop that cleaned up really well(I've read that they don't make blades for them, but can anyone tell me how you would load a blade into this-looks really confusing to me); I think the other two are Gillette Techs? -middle one is thicker and appears to be made of brass?
74417
Better pic of Ladies' Kewtie razor & blades and 2 boxes of Gillette Blue Blades (these blades appear unopened and I was hoping you guys could tell me about the wisdom of using these old blades or not).
74418
Better pic of the old travel kit with an EverReady 100 brush (anyone have any idea of how old these travel sets are?

Sorry to take up so much space with these, but I was hoping you guys could shed some wisdom on me about them. After cleaning them up, I was pretty pleased to get them so cheap. Thanks for any help you give me on these.

This one just arrived today. Looks like it was used only a couple times. (Just one of the original blades was used and it came with the razor.) Case is in good shape.
I'm looking forward to cleaning, loading it up and seeing how she shaves!

My Mane goal was the brush as well...though I did need a blade bank too. On the downside the holder for the brush is very very stiff...so much that if I were to continue to take the brush on and off it would DEEPLY gouge the brush. So I need to buy another cheepie to go in soley for display only.

Looking to try some more razors after using my trusty 38c for many months, I jumped at the chance to buy a "mystery box" of razors that was offered on B&B by Chainfire. It arrived on Friday and I finally got a chance to open it up about an hour ago. Oh my! :001_tt1: Lots of great stuff! 16 great looking razors and a bunch of extras.
I'm going to have a lot of fun trying to identify these guys. I can recognize the superspeeds from my many hours logged on B&B, and I'm super excited to try the gold slant included (how did he know I really wanted to try that!) And then the Gems, and, and, and... Oh, going from one razor to 17 overnight is going to make my decisions in the morning much harder, I'm going to have to wake up five minutes earlier just so I have time to pick which one to use. And then there are the extras, I could talk about those for awhile too but I need to stop typing and go play with my new toys
