...are freaking delicious. Yes, I know they are apparently named after an American breakfast cereal. Yes, I am sure they are the product of a nefarious gene manipulation and hybridization program that will ultimately destroy the world's food supply.
But if these Imperial Clone Apples represent the end of the world, then the end of the world is gonna taste mighty good. Anyone with access to the luscious orbs of delight marketed as "Honey Crisp" Apples should sample one immediately. They are awesome.

i just had some over the weekend for the first time in my life, and I have to agree, these are amazing. Even one that looked over ripped was crispy and sweet and juicy like it was injected with sugar water. These are now my favorite apples. If you can find them buy them.

My kids would agree....they love 'em. Pink Ladies, Fujis, and Braeburns are good too. It's definitely apple season.

When peaches are in season I go through about 4-6 a day. When the peaches are out (like now) I then go to apples. Honeycrisp's are tasty goodness.

Dare I say I think they are overrated? I have tried every fancy-name apple in the produce department and keep coming back to Braeburns. Winesaps are also pretty amazing, but try finding those in a regular grocery store anymore.

The Honeycrisp apple was produced from a 1960 cross of Macoun and Honeygold, as part of the University of Minnesota apple breeding program.
In 2006, the Honeycrisp apple was named the Minnesota state fruit.

I love 'em! Unfortunately, they grow in a more northern climate, not around here. Like any apple, simply being a given variety doesn't equal great quality. However, when ripe and fresh from the orchard, they're awesome!

I tried to grow honey crisp and golden dwarf delicious trees (one each) out in my yard and they haven't taken off yet thanks to some deer intervention this spring. If do next year, I'll be enjoying fresh apples next season.

They all *pale* compared to Macintosh apples, which are hard to find because they bruise so easily and don't transport well.

Macintosh apples (and spartan) are pretty much the standard apple around these parts, I've probably got a dozen pick your own orchards within a 45 minute drive in any direction. The problem is that often you get a batch that aren't quite right and end up being floury or turn-your-face-inside-out sour.

Honestly from my experience various apples in their respective orchards can be all amazing. I've had fresh Golden Delicious apples that would rival any fruit in the world IMO, I've also had Honey crisps that will knock my socks off. I think it all depends on season, how old the apples are, as well as how far they've traveled. I would probably agree that if I got a McIntosh right near an orchard in Washington it'd be great, and I'd bet that if you had a honeycrisp grown in MN around Oct or so you'd be thoroughly impressed.

Honey Crisps are delicious apples that are grown in Virginia and West Virginia as well. They are regularly sold by one of my favorite farmer-vendors at the farmer's market I frequent. I am also a fan of the Stayman Winesap, Nittany, and Mutsu Crispin apples.

I am guessing that most of the comments about the nefarious gene manipulation and the demise of the world food supply are tongue in cheek but just in case there weren't, you have nothing to fear. Hybridization of produce has existed for many years, in fact most apples are a hybrid of other fruits. Most hybridization is done through the grafting of trees. A lot of people get very confused and are worried that this is a genetically modified organism (GMO) and gene manipulation when it is not. GMO food items are when you take genes from an unrelated species and change the DNA of another (Google Fish Tomatoes and you will see what I mean). So rest assured, honeycrisp apples are both very delicious and harmless to the world food supply.
The next apple to be the next big thing is called the Sweetango apples developed by the same people who brought you the honeycrisp. It is a cross between the honeycrisp and the zestar and supposedly tastes of fall spices, I believe it was only available in three areas this year.
As for the person who posted about the McIntosh apples, I am surprised that you have had a hard time finding them (it looked like you are in Maryland?) I have seen them in every grocery store that I have been to this year, Whole Foods, Giant, Safeway along with most farmers markets. I have been buying them in the tote bags which have been abundant at the stores I mentioned above.

Too funny - I was just thinking about posting a thread about these. They are the best apples I've ever had. (I'd never heard of them until last year. Now I look for them whenever I go to buy apples.)

Been eating gala apples (YUM) but just found some honey crisps in the store. Have not tried one yet as I had other apples to finish up first.
Never noticed them in the store before this thread.

My just-turned 2 YO son made a funny face on his first bite of a Honey Crisp, like it was sour... then proceeded to eat half an apple with me.
VERY tasty. Glad I discovered them.
Crazy turns in life...discover a new kind of apples on a shaving forum that I found via a fitness site.

Had my first bite of a honeycrisp yesterday. A woman at work had one and it was too big for her to eat alone, so she gave me half (peeled and cut). Now I've got to go pick some up to see what they're like with the peel still on.
I was very impressed.
My 2 y/o apple snob son's favorite. I agree they are very good. I also like Fujis a lot.

I'm definitely a Braeburn man, but I tried my first Honey Crisp last night. It was fantastic -- a strong second favorite for me. Nice "snap" when bitten into and very juicy.

Same here, I had never had them before this season. My girlfriend, being from the Michigan area, new about these and was excited when she saw them in our local market. They are delicious. Also, Honey Crisp cider with some mulling spices makes for a tasty drink.:001_cool:
