View Full Version : Do you leave the water running, or fill the sink?

Nick

I've seen people do it both ways, so I was interested in what the consensus is.

Now's the time to fess up. Are you environmentally sensitive, fill the sink and just use one sinkful of water, or do you abhor dipping your razor into a mirky creamy/soapy/stubble filled stew, and just let the water run?

I often fill the sink, but I also confess to just letting that hot water run on occasion.

The wishy washy option? (Pun intended)

I run the water when rinsing between passes. I let some water drain from the sink while doing this, but I definitely have the sink full so I can float my lather bowl to keep it warm. I'm not sure which answer fits me. Some of the above?

I used to fill the sink but after watching a special on 20-20, Dateline, or the like about bacteria in the household, I stopped. The guy they interviewed and tested sinks, toilets, countertops, etc in the homes for bacteria made the comment he'd rather drink from the toilet than the sink (although he was referring to the kitchen sink and the germs from old food, sponges, etc). While I don't let the water run the entire time I'm shaving, I do use running water to rinse my razor between passes with a quick flip of the handle turning it on, then back off. Paranoid? Maybe. Well, probably.

I take somewhat of a middle ground. I think staring at a sink full of disgusting hair bits and lather is not a way I wish to begin the day, so I do not keep the sink full. As a half-measure of conservation, I only turn on the water to rinse my razor off, rather than leaving it running all the time.

I leave the water running but not full blast, I turn it down to less than halfway. This keeps the heat up and the water bills down.

Neither, and I DON'T GO BOTH WAYS!

That being said, I shave in the shower without regard to the environment. There's plenty of water already and I'm paying for it, if we run out, just make some more!!

I REFUSE TO ANSWER THAT TO INCRIMINATE ME.....

I usually use the same bowl of water for two passes and a fresh one for pass three...

rinsing the razor off in the bowl and finally under the faucet when i am through....

then that great cold splash !!!!!

Being very prone to skin infections....I let the water run. I slow it down some...but I cant go with a contaminated sink of water collecting dirt, grime, dead skin, and hair from my face.

I probably should clean my razor more than I do.

Wow, I must be "groomatically incorrect!" :scared:

I fill the basin so I can sit my mug into it to keep the lather warm. I keep it that way for all three passes, then I drain and wipe out the sink. Then I let the cold water run while I splash/rinse my face.

When using a DE I fill the sink once to conserve water.

I use a folded wet towel to wipe my str8s between passes.

Rik,
When I was a young and foolish fellow, I always used a piece of tissue paper to wipe my str8 clean between strokes... The crisper the better..

I'm with Rik. I run a sinkful and do with that during the shave, wiping my blade on a damp washrag folded in half on the counter edge. My bathroom is just about 14 miles from our hot water heater, so it takes a few minutes for hot water to get there. I also boil a hotpot full and dump about half into the sink as well, and only use that water to do my pre-shave hot towel soak, then rinses between lathers and passes. When I'm done, I use the sink water to rinse my brush while I wait on more hot water to get there. Then I do my final rinse and rinse my blade under the running water.

Well, I can't really answer the poll question, because I don't fill up the sink but I don't let hot water flow, either. While shaving, I shut the water off, then turn on warm (not hot) water to rinse the razor as needed. Hot water makes the DE razor head quite toasty, and I don't care for the feeling of hot steel pressed against my face. (Ditto for cold water/cold steel.)

Running the water for 1-2 seconds a half dozen times to rinse the razor doesn't come anywhere near a sinkful of water. So I'm not sure you save water by filling the sink.

When I used to shave with an Atra, I used thick Noxzema cleansing cream to lather my face, and there is no way to swish that stuff from between the blades by swirling the razor in water. Therefore I developed a habit of using running water to rinse the blades.

With my reversion to mug, soap, and DE, I let the sink fill up to warm the mug, and use that water for rinsing also.

I am one of those people that turn the faucet on and off as required. If I need to rinse, I quickly turn on the tap and turn it off when done. A littlem more effort but I don't waste water.

BladeRunner001

There was no category for neither, so I didn't vote. I use my Hot Pot, fill it up and put my bowl of lather in it. I only use running water (few seconds) to wash the razor of the goo.

Wow! A poll from January 2006. When the poll started, I filled the sink. The water became too cold and murky somewhere in mid 2008. I switched to running the water, but only in brief spurts.

+1 here, while DE shaving. While str8 shaving I only turn it on between passes or when done (I wipe the lather off the blade with a cloth). I guess that makes str8 shaving good for the environment!:tongue_sm

I just fill the sink enough to dip my razor.

If I shower after my gf, the water is already not as hot as it should be. Then when I go to shave it's still warm, but not piping hot. I plug the sink, wet my brush and let the water fill 1/3 of the sink. Thats enough for me.

I used to fill the sink once and leave it for rinsing my face before the shave, soaking the brush, rinsing the razor during the shave, rinsing my face after the shave. However, now that I picked up a scuttle, I run it while I rinse my face and turn it on and off to rinse the razor during the shave. I don't see why anyone would just leave it running the whole time.

First thing I do is turn the hot water on to a trickle---splash some water on the puck---then go take my meds--check my blood sugar--feed the cat and sometimes check e-mail----by the time I get back, the water is finally hot---I continue to let it trickle and wet my face--pour the original water off the puck--soak the brush and work up a lather---re-wet my face--lather up and shave--rinse off as needed---when I'm done---turn it to cold rinse out the brush and razor------then hit the shower. All at a trickle the whole time.

+1.

My answer to the poll would have been "none of the above" if it were available. I turn the water on to rinse the razor, then turn it off and shave. Turn it on again to rinse, and so forth. The razor is always rinsed in clean water, but I don't run the water unnecessarily.

IMO, nobody should just allow the water the run the entire time. That's just not right.

I rinse the razor under running water. I used to fill the sink and swish my razor, thinking I was saving water, but I wound up using 3 times the water to clean off the shaving cream scum that accumulated on the sink and razor that way.

Dip the razor in a sink full of water, but empty and refill as the water gets fouled with whiskers and lather.

Rinse the razor in running DHMO if I get anything underneath the blade.

So yes, best of both I guess.

I fill the sink maybe 1/4. A sponge is enough to clean my straight razor blade. It's also enough water to soak the brush.

I turn the water on when I need to rinse the razor, then shut it back off. The silence is more (http://www.amazon.com/Kundalini-Awakening-Gentle-Activation-Spiritual/dp/0553353306/) meditative (http://www.amazon.com/Meditation--Complete-Guide-Patricia-Monaghan/dp/1577310888/), especially as I relax and allow myself to passively listen to the sound of hairs cutting and the razor itself gliding through the lather. Every little thing makes a sound, even a drop of water running down your cheek.

Depends.. If I have a couple of days' stubble (even only two full days without shaving) the sink fills with hair. Since I use the same water to rinse my face, I'd be splashing stubble and gunk unto my face again.

If there's not a lot of stubble, there's no trouble using a sink of water. However, all stubble sticks to the sink at the edge of the water, which does not happen if I rinse my razor under running water.

However, I NEVER let the water run. That's just a stupid waste of hot water. Just turn the faucet on when I need water.

Guess I am a little dense. "...leave the water running, or fill the sink?" for what? Washing my face, I leave the water running. During the shave, I leave the water running on low. While showering before the shave, I fill the sink to warm my bowl and brush then turn if off; learned the hard way not to leave the water running with the plug in while showering - sink overflowed!

I have problems with hot water. (The water doesn't get hot enough.) so when I wake up and start the coffee maker I fill a coffee mug, a plastic tumbler, and a cereal bowl each with filtered water. I stick all three in the microwave for 4 minutes and take my shower.

By the time I get out of the shower, the microwave has finished and the water is no longer boiling hot. I pour the water from the cereal bowl into yet another small bowl and put the cereal bowl on top of that. I'm left with a coffee mug with hot water to soak/dip the brush in; another cup of hot water to rinse out the razor (in lieu of the sink) and the cereal bowl to whip up the lather.

I save water by not having to keep the tap running, and I find that there's plenty of water in the tumbler to effectively rinse my razor even after 3 passes (except on mondays when I have extra growth).

Not sure if anyone else does this, but it works for me.

Man this was from 2006. Greetings from the future. Just so you know, in 2010 the recession isnt over yet and cigarettes cost $6. No flying cars yet either.

I think I would rather drink from water in an area where food is prepared rather than where the digestive waste is "dropped". Just sayin. I've heard that claim before, that toilet water is cleaner and has less germs, but the people that say that arent running to the toilet for a glass of water now are they? I think you're less likely to get meningitis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meningitis) from the sink than the toilet. I have heard of kids getting this playing in the toilet when their parents arent watching them.

I fill the sink with hot water, then dump it after my first pass. That's where most of the whiskers, crud, etc., is.

I fill the sink with hot water again then do a second pass. I usually only do 2. If I do more I just use the same bowl of water.

I only fill the sink halfway or so, my sink is not that big.

I constantly dip my razor into the water, I can't imagine doing it any other way.

"Do you leave the water running, or fill the sink?" No.

None of the above. Prep in the shower, turn water on and off as needed to rinse the razor. Until reading this thread, I wouldn't have thought about any other way to do this.

Filling the sink seems to me like a holdover from the days before indoor plumbing. I wouldn't have thought that anyone under the age of 90 would still do this. It seems a little distasteful to me.

As for running the water, this seems to me like running the furnace with the doors and windows open. I can't stand to see waste.

I do have to admit, though. that not so very long ago I would run the water while brushing my teeth.
