I don't usually bother, no. A lot of them don't have seams to begin with, and most of the rest aren't terribly obvious. In this case, though, it was a very big, rough, tacky-looking seam. Bleh!

Finally got around to restoring some vintage brush handles. Don't have any before pictures but here are the after:

Knotted:

Post First Lather:
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t285/jb_edson81/Brushes/SAM_0586.jpg

From left to right I have the following: Fuller Blue and cream knotted with a Silvertip (20mm) set at 45mm loft. The blue part initially had some small scratches that were removed with sandpaper from 320 to 2000 grit followed by flitz. The hole was filled with an epoxy/wine cork mixture.

Next: Made-Rite 203 badger cased Blue and white handle knotted with a 20mm best badger set at a 45mm loft. Handle was filled with epoxy and wine cork and outside polished with Flitz.

Next: Ever-ready 200t blue/cream knotted with a Finest extra-stuffed bulb (20 mm) set at a 45mm loft. I wish I had a before picture as this one was completely covered with soap scum and grime before. Entire handle was sanded from 220 to 2000 grit sandpaper and polished with flitz. Handle was filled with epoxy and pennies, so it has some heft.

Last: Made-rite 253 badger cased cream colored brush knotted with a TGN Finest Fan (20mm) set at a 48mm loft.

Initial impressions: I wanted to try a number of knots out from TGN before knotting some precious butterscotch handles I have to make sure I got the right knot and loft for them without ruining them. I lathered with these all once. The silvertip is the most scritchy of these, but has plenty of backbone. Might be a great exfoliating brush. The Best was a little less scritchy, but very similar. Both the finests are great knots. They were the softest of the ones tested and had plenty of backbone. I slightly preferred the bulb over the fan, but it may have been the loft. The TGN finest bulb actually felt much like a smaller Simfix grosvenor LE, which is one of my favorite brushes. For the price, the TGN finest is certainly a quality knot.

Great looking restores, Joe. How's the 45mm loft with those bulb shaped knots? They look terrific. I was wondering if a fan shaped knot would be preferable at 45mm. I understand the bulbs can get a bit pointy at shorter lofts. It doesn't look like an issue on your restores, however.

Nice job!

I meant to set the fan at 45mm, but the epoxy I used for a base on that handle ran a little more than I wanted to. I think it would be much better at 45mm, but it is still a nice knot and has plenty of backbone for face lathering. My favorite is the extra-stuffed Finest bulb. Just felt great and I think the fan would be better suited at that loft as well. None of them were too pointy, and I think for the 20mm knots that 45mm is an ideal loft for face lathering.

Have 2 Finests Bulb and Fan both set at 45mm and a Super Bulb @ 40mm all 20mm knots

Not an issue on either of them ( to me anyways ).

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn179/jonesie_007/Shaving%20Brush%20Restoration/100_0358.jpg
An all brass hollow handle—I put in a 20 mm 2 band Finest extra hair. Set the loft the lowest I could at 52mm. I’m hoping with the extra hair it won’t be to floppy.

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn179/jonesie_007/Shaving%20Brush%20Restoration/100_0361.jpg
The next is an Ever-Ready 150. I sanded the cream to remove the seams and liked the mat finish…so it’s gonna stay like that for now.
It is also a 20mm 2 band Finest extra hair…set at 46mm.

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn179/jonesie_007/Shaving%20Brush%20Restoration/100_0353.jpg
The last one is a wood and brass piece that I put a UK 20mm bristle 3 band boar in. I set it at 55mm loft—which I think is not as important with boar……correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you! It's a trickster, though; looks just like the Ever Ready, but the base only has 3 steps in it. The true Ever Ready bases have 4 steps. I've not seen another quite like it. I've really enjoyed it the few times I've used it so far.

Finished a new one tonight and thought I'd share because it is a cool looking handle which I had not seen before. I'm also pretty happy with the way the writing turned out, since there was no paint left before I began.

It buffed up really nicely too. It's a bit hard to tell in this shot but I might take a post bloom one when I have more time and better light.

Just acrylic paint, scrimshaw style. (Stipple it into the lettering with the tips of the brush and then buff off the excess while still wet.)

Gave the brush a go and it worked like a champ. Gotta love those finest badger knots. Even the small (to me) 18mm size did not slow it down. Here it is afterwards with a bit of bloom going on. I set it a little deeper than normal so it has backbone to spare and probably wont bloom much more than this. Good hard soap brush. :thumbup1:

Here's my Vintage Hoffritz travel brush with tube. I restored it with a 18mm T.G.N finest badger knot, set at 35mm loft. Total height of brush is 80mm, the travel tube is 96mm in height.

The brush material is not bakelite or catalin, but some other type of plastic, which is developing a buttery / beige patina. The base of the brush was originally filled with plaster, but I drilled that out, and replaced it with JB weld, and added a couple of stainless washers for heft. I haven't yet washed this knot, so curious as to how this kleine fritz performs. A lttle bummed that the travel tube does not have a screw top though.

Here's a shot of the brushes I have finished.

The cream/brown Rubberset has a loft of 55 mm with a 20 mm Finest knot from TGN.
The black/butterscotch Fuller has a loft of 52mm with a 22 mm Finest knot from TGN.
The black/clear Everready has a loft of 55 mm with a 24 mm Finest knot from TGN.
The blue/cream Everready has a UK boar knot from TGN.
The yellow/black Everready has 50 mm loft with a 18 mm knot from TGN.

I like the lofts of the TGN knots to be 50 mm or above as they are firm. The only problem is a nick from the drill in the yellow/black Everready (my 1st resto) and a little clear epoxy in the knot at the top of the handle on the cream/brown Rubberset (my 2nd resto). I've been very pleased with the TGN Finest knots and their performance.

Well I was looking for a suitable brush to clean up and I found this neat little no name jobber. Pulled the knot and replaced it with a 18mm finest set at 42 mm. The handle is 42 mm tall and the widest point at the base is 37 mm. I haven't used it to shave yet, but have whipped up a test lather. It looks like it could be a nice little brush.

Before: Not bad shape, but the nylon knot did nothing for me and it looked like it was chewed on by a pet.

I broke out the newly restored Ever-Ready 100 for last night's shave and I am very impressed with this TGN 2 band finest knot. :thumbup1:

This is my first brush with 2 band finest and I can easily see it becoming a favorite. The tips are just as soft as the TGN Grade A Silvertip but the knot overall has a heck of a lot more backbone. The brush didn't bloom much at all but I will post photos of what bloom there is over the weekend. The attached photo is before first use and doesn't really capture the contrast of the dark and light hairs which is very attractive in person.

I fill my restored handles with tub and tile adhesive caulk and it really adds a nice heft to the handle as well.

It came as part of a lot of stuff and I didn't have much interest in this brush until it got here. It's a maroon and wood Ever-Ready. Not sure on the model number as it looks like Pi to me. It's a pretty small little brush with a 20 mm TGN white boar knot set at 48 mm. I haven't used it yet, but the test whipped up a nice lather. I still have a bit of polishing to do on it, but the handle has 5 coats of a tung/spar/mineral spirits finish on it.

Got this Rubberset travel brush and tube on vacation. It is celluloid and I usually don't care that much for celluloid, but this one is lovely. Polished it up and popped a 16 mm best badger in it and it looks nice. It is a little brush, but next to my nano Scot it doesn't look so small. I drilled it out deeper to set the knot in deeper and you'd never mistake celluloid when you work it, a very strong and pleasant smell of camphor hit the nose.

I agree, it is a very pleasing shape and easy to hold on to when using because of that voluptuous shape. The replacement knot was quite a bit longer and fuller than the (admittedly worn and ratty) original, but it fits nicely. One reason for setting it low, aside from desiring to increase the stiffness, was to make sure it fit in the tube. Interestingly the outside diameter of the tube is identical to that of the nano Scot, but it is a centimeter taller. The celluloid is thinner than the bakelite nano tube, so it handles the larger handle fine.

these all look very nice. I'm in the process of restoring 2 Everreadys. A question I had is: will the knot set well without anything below to support it? I drilled the first one out and the handle is completely hollow with no shelf. the new knot fits the hole closely, so I was just going to apply epoxy around the plug and slide it in. I might glue some washers or pennys in the base of the hollow handle for some heft. what do you think?:confused1
(the new knot for the second one will arrive any day. when it does, I'll set them both at the same time and post a pic when they're done)

Most fill the hollow. You can mix just about anything with the epoxy, and people have. I favor cork but others have used sawdust, BBs, wood dowels, and pennys. If your going to use anything heavy like washers or pennys, put some in dry first to make sure you like the weight. Also don't fill until you have the knot you want to use so you can set the height of the shelf where you want it, and be sure to leave a little space for the epoxy to secure the knot. Another thought for your consideration is not to put any metal filler high up the handle. epoxy and cork, wood, or sawdust will drill out if you accidentally fill too high.

I've restored or dissected over 2 dozen brushes and the only ones that had a shelf were the solid bodied handles or the handles with metal ferrules over lucite.

The two piece catalin handles were clearly assembled by inserting the knot into the ferrule, inverting the ferrule with the knot in it and then pouring an adhesive (molten rubber, a plaster like substance or something similar) into the bottom then gluing or screwing the ferrule to the base. If you remove the ferrule from a vintage brush and look at the bottom of the knot the meniscus of the glue clearly shows that it was poured in from the bottom while the knot was inverted.

Therefore, what seems to be a floor when you drill out from the top was usually just the surface of the glue or rubber after it set. I drill through the whole mess, clean it out and glue the new knot in with a perimeter ring of epoxy around the plug. This helps keep water from infiltrating between the plug and the handle. The only time I filled a handle was when there were cracks in the base that needed some reinforcement.

There have been some exceptions to this construction, but I glued the replacement in the same way in those with great results. I can't see a downside to gluing in a piece of cork or washer except that it is fiddly and takes time and isn't necessary.

Filling the handle changes the balance and perhaps the transparency of a light colored translucent base. Also, as one member has pointed out, it makes the brush heavier so if you drop it it hits the floor with more force and more potential for cracking. It also makes it harder for some guy 30 years from now to replace the knot you just put in, particularly if your floor is a metal washer.

It is your brush, do as you please, but just wanted you to know that suspending the knot inside the ferrule with a perimeter of adhesive is how most of those brushes were made and it works fine in rebuilding them.

This is very helpful, thank you.

Well Here is my first restore I can't wait for the epoxy to set. Overall I am happy I was kind of to eager and made a impulse buy on the handle. I like it but don't love it. Did not have a caliper or a ruler handy so I went with neck tech and knew a 12GA shell was 18.5 mm it was a little bigger than that so I order a 20mm Silvertip it fit perfectly.

On the Anchorset, what is the green material at the top of the brush, made of ?

Just finished my first one. 22 mm TGN silvertip set at 52mm loft.
I had bought a black top/butterscotch bottom Fuller brush with the intention of using it, but it cleaned up so well, I decided to use it as is and see how I like it. So I used an Everready 200T, I had to modify it to use this knot. It really is fun and I can see getting addicted to this.

I bought a red and black Ever-Ready brush handle from Lucky in this thread:

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=172526

http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=22987

He drilled it out and polished it up very nice. He mentioned that he also had a knot for sale if I wanted it. A TGN 22mm finest. Sure, why not?

So with just a little bit of cleaning up the hole - all I really had to do was not scratch it! - here it is:

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=129887&d=1288225736

Man, that was a simple restore!! I got it sitting right at 45mm loft. I think it's going to be great face lathering brush. It will see soap and water tonight.
--------
And here it is after first lather (still damp):

129926

Well, I was right - a great face lathering brush! Soft and firm, had to remind myself it was time to pick up the razor. First soap was some P-160 I won in a PIF from garyg.

Thanks for doing all the work Captain!

Seeing all of these beautiful brushes was all the incentive I needed to set aside my RAD (straights) and pickup SBAD. So I picked up a few old brushes on the bay that caught my eye, gutted them, and ordered a couple of 22mm knots from TGN; one finest and one silvertip. Like others have noted, the finest has a softer feel than silvertip.

Here are the results of my first foray into the world of reknotting:

I bought these 3 brushes off B/S/T a good while ago. I thought it might be interesting to share a few photos after getting them properly broken in and gunked up with soap residue. :001_smile

My first two purchases were from lax1mxr (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/member.php?u=8920) who does a great job. 1st was the black and gold Ever-Ready (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=82845) on the right. It has a Vulfix Super Badger Knot. Feels similar to my shavemac though not quite as dense. Good all round brush.

My 2nd purchase from him was the red Strong Set on the left (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=96154). It has a 18mm pure badger knot from Golden Nib. Brush stands 110mm. Brush loft is 47mm. Might be my most scruffy brush, and does a great job lathering MWF among others.

My 3rd purchase was from prophetic_joe (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/member.php?u=6286). I really liked his offering in that he had a couple of empty handles and would let the buyer select the knot (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=135537). Since I had enough badger brushes and since I liked my 1 cheap Gillette nylon brush, I asked if he would install a Nylon knot which he had not offered. I also thought the white bristles would complement the overall look of the handle. He accommodated my request without any second guessing. The brush has very soft tips and is a floppier than any of my badgers but can lather soaps like MWF and Tabac quite well. Its been my default brush for C.O. Bigelow cream lathering.

Here are a couple new restores. The first is an Ever Ready red handled brush I put a 22 mm TGN finest in. This is for my son, who is starting to shave, so of course I tried it out to be sure it was suitable. My favorite TGN is the black pure badger, but I must admit the two band finest is a fantastic knot. Does everything well.

149864

This one is an Ever Ready 75k, with marbled brown catalin bottom and (surprisingly) a celluloid ferrule. The ferrule was badly cracked, so I filled the cracks with epoxy filled with graphite. Not a perfect color or texture match, but you hardly notice it and it was worth the trouble for this beautiful handle. The bottom can only be really appreciated with transmitted light, it looks better in the flesh. This is a great example of why I never fill hollow catalin handles. I decided to back to basics for this one and drop a TGN UK boar knot in it.

Fortunately, the handle was in pretty good shape to start with, so not a lot of work was needed. I sanded out some fine scratches with 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper (sanded wet) and then polished it up with some automotive polishing compound (Turtle Wax, I believe). Everything was applied and buffed by hand. As a final step, I applied a layer of Carnauba wax and hand polished to a nice, protective shine. Overall, the whole process may have taken 15 minutes.

I used the same steps with my other restores, although if needed, I sanded out deeper scratches and gouges with coarser grit wet/dry sandpaper, and then progressively moved to finer grits.

Here is the latest edition to my brush family. A Solid Set celluloid handle with a 24 mm TGN Finest. I love this brush. I first thought, in contrast to the voluptuous and very feminine profiles of most of my other brushes, this one looked too top heavy. But it cleaned up nicely and that amber celluloid base and white celluloid ferrule are very lovely together. And this 24mm Finest may be the sweet spot for value and performance in the TGN line. This quickly became one of my favorite brushes.

Just finished looking through all 31 pages of this thread. Quite inspiring.

Well, here's my first attempt at a restore from abut 3 months ago. Found this gem of a handle for $2.00 at an antiques mall. Knot is a best badger 22/65 from Whipped Dog. Did have to open up the hole quite a bit but I love the knot.

The clear plastic was in bad shape with a bit of crazing so I fabricated a wooden base section for the upper section to attach to, it has a knot which I think gives it a lot of character. I am green with envy. Those handles are going for $30 plus on the bay now! I have a red 150 with a TGN Finest Fan 24mm@54mm and it's my favorite brush. Very nice!

Thanks! I know, the price are crazy on ebay. I bought the green for $7 and the red one for $17.

I really like the red 150. Perfect size. I wonder why the green one are more popular than the red though...

The reds are more common than the greens. There are lots of red handles on eBay, but not that many greens. Both are nice, though!

I really like that black and brown Ever-Ready. That's a combination you don't see everyday and it looks in great shape. Would love to see that with a nice TGN two-band Finest Badger.

I believe I ordered a silvertip for it but the knots for all of them should be in today. I'll post a pic and you can take your pick! they will all be in the BST soon b/c I just splurged on a Chubby 1 super 2 band.

Here they are completed minus the little plymouth butterscotch, the 20mm knot I ordered was too much it needs a 18mm. All TGN knots set to ~50mm unless noted. The cream and blue got a 20mm Pure Badger, the butterscotch and black 20mm Pure Badger, the black and brown Ever-Ready 20mm best badger, my vintage Rooney with 24mm finest XH, the butterscotch kent ks? has a 22mm silvertip, the little black and white rubberstet 20mm best and its big brother got a 24mm finest fan XH set to ~46mm.

Here is my latest batch of brushes pre-bloom:

Post-Bloom:
224766
The little butterscotch came in an ever-ready travel tube but the brush does not have any makers marks, its catalin and says 300cc badger and bristle made in USA. It has a 16mm Best badger knot from TGN set to ~42mm.

The Rooney Butterscotch has a 22mm Finest XH from TGN set to ~48mm. It should continue to bloom, the finest seems to take a while.

The Rooney Persian Jar has a 22mm Silvertip Grade A from TGN set to ~50mm. It bloomed nicely and produced a ton of lather during the test lather.

The last one is a Ever Ready 100 that has a 20mm silvertip from TGN set to ~50mm. Thanks to BandB member Noahpictures for selling me the brush, its the colors of my alma mater, the university of kansas. It is a gift to my father for fathers day along with a super speed.

Thank you. I'm about to set an identical 22mm Finest knot into a vintage Kent handle.
48 is looking like the sweet spot.

Ok, here it is. I experimented with loft. Settled on 50mm.
I gotta say that the handle shape combined with the TGN Finest makes a sweet brush.
Sadly, the remnants of the original Kent decal disintegrated during the restoration.

Anybody ever heard of replacement Kent decals?

Anyway. This was a fun project.

My latest....wood is interesting and not where I am strongest. I probably stained and sanded and restained and resanded 15 times. Replaced the old knot with a 20 mm TGN Pure Badger knot.

A few I just set the knots in.

First is a 28x50 set in a bakelite Fuller (think chubby 2 only better looking)

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii191/mosesrogers/Shaving/5fce3a48.jpg

Second is a 26x51 set in an Ever Ready 200 in the coveted green and black.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii191/mosesrogers/Shaving/11752f3e.jpg

Third is 24x47 set in a terrific OLD Rubberset (saw an ad from 1908 with this handle)

Got to love those marbled butterscotch and black Fullers. They look awesome with a big, fat badger knot stuck in them.

Great restorations!
