But like you found out, the content may have been saved already.

I also saved a copy of it locally. Anyone know how to reach the original owner for permission to re-host? :D

i scraped the site as well. all is not lost.
Yes, Geocities is gone - it was actually supposed to disappear several months ago.
That site had good info, in addition to the Gillette date codes. Unfortunately, I was only able to get the date codes portion.
I was hoping he'd port the site to another host, but it doesn't look like that happened. At least not yet.

You can find that site here: http://www.safetyrazors.net/, or at least part of it, I guess. It appears that the whole thing isn't up.
The domain (safetyrazors.net) expires on October 31 of this year. I think that was just a front door to the Geocities hosted stuff, as none of the links lead to anything except Geocities fail.
It looks like the site was last updated in 2008, so the owner may just have lost interest. :(

That's a shame the site is mostly gone. Fortunately since I use the date info section so frequently I saved a local copy to my desktop. It contains so much more info then the WIKI version.

You can still get it through Google. Search for Gillette razor dating and click Cached. It will pop up and you can save it locally.

Here's a link (http://74.125.93.132/search?q=cache:Uod7HjpIUKIJ:www.geocities.com/safetyrazors/gil_ser2.htm+Gillette+Razor+dating&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a) to the cached page. But so far, I've been unable to save a copy of the page (bookmark, yes, but save the page, no). Says can't read the source file. I wonder if it's because I'm running Firefox?

I can save it with Firefox. No problem. I use the Mac version.

The wiki is what our members make it -- who wants to add to it? (Bearing in mind that some of the info from Geocities has been proven incorrect.)

I just made an archival image based on the cached link posted above. It took a ton of "print screens" and pasting, trimming and such...but here it is. I'd recommend saving it to your computer in case imageshack ever goes the way of Geocities.
Also, to avoid legal issues or a Stan the Man situation, I gave full credit to the (previous) owner of the site as best I could.

I thought the owner was putting up safetyrazors.net in order to replace the geocities page. For awhile he had a notice on the site about the upcoming closure of geocities and a link to the other address. I hope he hasn't lost interest, because it seems like the rest of us are just now catching on (and we're growing).

Guys,
I just created a page on my website to keep this wonderful information alive and accessible for everyone to use.

I added a link so people can send me the correct info and I will maintain the page. I will also work more on it as time permits. Perhaps any suggestions from you fellows and I will build a bigger and better collective site page(s) for future use.

I downloaded the whole date code site, not just the codes.... So, I can add it to my site as well.
I will put up a disclaimer that the content is not mine.

There where no changes in years.

Chad, The format of both databases is different. Where the B&B WIKI version shows a period in years when a particular model was in production, the Geo version only shows the intro date of each version. Because of this the number of models shown, particularly in the open comb years, are limited in the WIKI version to eliminate confusion when overlapping occurs. Since I think the main purpose of the WIKI is to identify a particular year using a Gillette date code it certainly accomplishes this very nicely. When I try to identify a particular razor I end up using both versions and the Krumholz book. I also use the blade notes in the Geo version. This would be out of place in the WIKI.
I currently don't know how I would update the WIKI without making a mess. Some things are best left alone or only corrections made when discovered.

Good points all, Len. Maybe a separate wiki page for blades? I think there's enough interest here in blades to warrant that now. What else do you think our wiki should have? Honestly, the goal here is for B&B to be the best place to go to for all of this information. You're right that changing the format might be difficult. it still strikes me as a worthy project. I'd love to see folks with ideas for changes to the wiki page (or new pages to link to the existing page) get in touch with thirdeye, who will make sure that good changes take place without mucking up the great work that's already been done.

But I'm not crazy... he really did have an update regarding the closure of Geocities and the new website address. Here's the cached version from Google (http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:Itx3NIuy9qUJ:www.geocities.com/safetyrazors/+geocities+safety+razors&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us). I just hope he replaces the rest of the site, or possibly gets someone to help him if he's got too much work to do.

Thats great then. If he keeps it up I don't need to.
I had posted this link a while back when the announcement that Geocities was history came out. Check out the archive site also for great old radio shows and films. Lots of good stuff there.
