Here's the link for the new thread. 2010 Portland, OR get together
We're looking for ideas right now so if anyone has any suggestions on things that they would like to see at an event drop a line with your thoughts.

This is going to be a kick...

I am driving to it, so I'll be bringing Stones, Strops, Razors, Hammers, Pins, etc: etc: etc:

Honing and Restoration demo's are a given....

The link doesn't seem to be working for me. If it isn't working for others - here is another attempt (link (http://www.straightrazorplace.com/forums/get-togethers-meetings/43125-april-24-25-2010-portland-oregon-get-together.html))

:w00t: Very exciting!

would it be a good idea for most folks to bring a handful of razors, hones and strops? a few Cigars perhaps?!

will it be kosher to have a beer or two? will the venue supply alcohol for sale or will they support a 6 pack byob option?

lastly, is there anything to bring (ie. chairs, etc.) to help make things move smoothly?

Sorry about the link guy's. I did a couple trial runs before I posted it and thought I had it figured out (I'm not really all that computer savy). I'd say yeah to bringing the razors etc., the beverage part we'll have to see about. Thus far the idea is to try to have the event at something like an ELK's or Masons lodge. I'm just waiting to hear about what kind of assistance singlewedge (the one who started the whole deal) is going to be looking for as well as the details as they become "set in stone".

I'm actually in portland right now on business and will be here for a couple of weeks... obviously I wouldn't be able to participate in something like this, but I was wondering: is there a retail store somewhere in the city that i could get a straight razor?

Excalibur Cutlery at Lloyd Center carries straight razors according to their website. Winn Perry also had one straight in his shop when I visited. Honestly, you're going to find better prices/selection online. Here is a thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=28408) of B&M shops in Portland.

I threw out the idea this morning to get hold of some of the better stocked B&M places in the PDX area to do a display at the meet. Maybe contact the place that will help you put together custom shave cream, since they do perfumes as well it'd be something that the ladies could get into as well.

From memory, Excalibur carried 5 or 6 Dovo's which i believe they will sell to you with a "factory edge" which i would deem unshaveable. Winn Perry also carried the Edwin Jagger straight, also without a honing option.

my hunch on the best place to buy straights in portland is at my house

that's a Great idea! the perfume house doesn't make thier own scents, but they have a fantastic stock.

Winn Perry also has a fantastic stock of items (link to his stock is in Jeremy's link for the portland B&M thread)

Escential on hawthorne blvd Does make thier own shave cream which can be custom scented with an abundance of essential oils. we could easily create our own.

I ended up leaving portland a little earlier than expected (I wasn't supposed to be back on the east coast until 11/9) but I did get a chance to check the Excalibur out at Lloyd Center. I also went down to Clackamas (sp?) mall, but wasn't there long enough to see anything. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but that Excalibur place seemed very similar to something we have on the East Coast in the DC/MD/VA area... though I can't think of the name. It was nice to see some straight razors on display, but the selection and prices weren't really all that great.

I didn't get a chance to check out some of the other places in portland I had read about, but can say that for the most part, I found Portland to be a very groovey place. I wouldn't mind at all if work sent me back there in the near future, and I'm sad I probably won't be around for the impending get together.

Well... the food was great. A cousin of mine in that area took me out to this little hole in the wall of a Lebanese place... I believe it was called Nicholas's? Great food. Come to think of it, I had left overs I totally forgot about :( The reason I forgot about them, probably, is because I bought a dozen VooDoo doughuts for myself and my co-workers which we feasted on for a day or two. After my trial ended, we went out to Jake's Crawfish (it may have another name) It's on Stark & 12th, I believe. The only other notable place I went was Porta Terra... it was in the Hilton downtown, not too far from the US Atty's office. Not sure where the meet up will be, but to those visiting from out of town: the places listed above are well worth your time.

Unfortunately, because my trip got cut short, the only place I was able to visit regarding shaving was Excalibur at the lloyd center. I had planned on visiting some of the other down town places this coming weekend :(

I've already contacted Glen (gssixgun) so we're (I) looking to get things rolling again for a PDX meet on April 24th & 25th. Glen is planning on brining some razors (duh), strops, hones, and general restoration items to do some demo's with. Thought it might be a good idea to see if some of the local B&M shops that carry a good selection of shaving related "wares" to come and possibly set up a booth or two. I've already contacted joshmpdx here and Gssixgun. If anyone has any interest in being part of getting this set up send me a PM or email. I was thinking maybe trying to get some interested parties together in the next couple weeks to brainstorm ideas and iron out some things. Glenn's given me a couple "pointers" to start with but other than that we're still pretty much at ground zero.

Thanks,

Michael

I've talked to Jordan the proprieter at Winn Perry and he is interested in setting something up.

There are a couple other shops i'll put a call into if we start getting some steam.

Nice job trying to round up vendors Josh!

At the moment we're still shy on a place to have this get together. I was thinking about contacting the Masons lodge down the road from me to see what kind of deal they had for using their space. When singlewedge originally was trying to get something going early last year he had wanted to book a conference room at the Hilton or someplace downtown, which would be great but I'm sure that would have been pretty pricey. Trying to keep things at a minimum so as not to have to ask for much of anything from anyone attending. If anyone has any ideas let me know. I was going to try to get hold of some of the vendors to see what kind of support they could provide and maybe come up with some shave related door prizes. Now I just need to figure out my pitch so I don't sound like a total doofus. Anyway that's all I can think of for the moment.

I'd almost suggest Perhaps asking a local university/collage for the use of their facilities? I know a lot of collages have small conference/meeting rooms that they offer at a reasonable price to community events

Maybe even a local library? it seems a lot have community meeting facilities.

Heck, even a church hall might suffice? a lot of them have open spaces that they are willing to let groups use for a small nominal fee

in short, You don't need much more then an open space, a few tables, a few nibblies, and a bit of chairspace, right?

Would be awesome to come to the event myself, but I live a leeetle bit too far away

We have several offices in the area that have meeting rooms or conference rooms. How much space is needed? I may be able to make it.

What is it that is wanting to be done?

Hadn't thought about libraries. I have looked up getting a conf room from PCC (Portland Community College) but they are only avail Mon-Sat (the event is planned for a Sat Sun) and their prices are way too high for just the deposit. I also looked up the local Rec centers but once again the deposits are too high. I'll keep looking around though. There's still time to get these things ironed out.

We're trying to set up an SRP/B&B/Anybodyelse that wants to come Wet Shavers Get together here in PDX on Sat April 24th & Sun the 25th. gssixgun from Gem Star customs is planning on coming and doing some restoration demos with Q&A stuff and bring some stones, strops, razors etc..

The meeting room in our Portland office can hold about 20 people but maybe just an open space with chairs around tables. I'll call the regional in the PDX area and ask.

We also use meeting rooms at a hotel outside of Portland that use to be an insane asylum and now it's a resort. I'm sure the locals can remember the name but I'll look it up too.

So here's the question I hate to have to ask. How much are people willing to pitch in to help make this get together happen? I haven't even gotten to any of the hotels yet but most of the community centers and Mason lodges in the area require a $500+ deposit then generally $600 per day. I thought we could limit that part of the meet to one day and figure out something else for the other but even so I can't afford to pitch out $1100-$1700. Once again if anyone has any suggestions lemme know. I'd love to hear from someone other than just the voices in my head..

Thanx,

Michael

Michael, how many people are you thinking we'll have?

why not something like a private section in a restaurant. Old Town Pizza has a large upstairs area that would work great.

Thanks for continuing to pull this together!

Here's what I've found out from the NW Davis, Old Town Pizza location. They have a banquet rm that seats 55people or a smaller rm above the kitchen that will seat 25. The 55p banquet rm has a $550 minimum spend on food etc and the 25p rm we'd have to do a min $220 spend for food (+18% grat). I was going to see about getting over this w.e. to check out what was avail and to hopefully talk to a person (face to face) about what we could get to suit our needs. All in all this would work out to cost anyone attending about $10+ each. I need to ask about if there are any time limitations but for a first time event it's looking like this is going to be the best bet. Questions? Comments? Suggestions?

We're going to need to tally up who all is planning to attend so that we can reserve accordingly. I got Glenn the address so he's looking into getting a room nearby. Also. Are we going to want to shoot for both days at the restaurant or would we like to figure out something else for the 2nd day? I'm just trying to cut down on the out of pocket for folks as much as possible. So if your in let me know and give me some of your thoughts about if you'd like to do both days at the OTP location or shoot for something else the second day.

Thanks guys,
Michael

I was going to upload a scanned copy of the menu from OTP but the scan was too big. Anyway. We're good to start piling in at 11:30 when they open the doors. We are reserved at the NW Davis location. The reserveration is for "up to" 20 people so once again if you'd like to be part of this let me know. This takes care of the 24th so we still have room to work with ideas/suggestions for the 25th. Thus far I have myself and Glen But realy need to nail down whoever else wants to be invikved with this.
