View Full Version : Key Rings?

What kind of key rings do you use to organize your keys but keep them less bulky. I hate having bulky keys because they are uncomfortable to keep in your pocket.
I use a ring without any ornament to reduce bulk. In addition, I try to minimise the number of keys I carry, and make sure none of them are those fat, plastic-headed monstrosities so favoured by car makers these days.
Or, you can look into a key wallet (key case) such as this one http://www.aspinaloflondon.com/eshop-catalogue/mens-collection/mens-leather-wallets/leather-key-case/887-key-case-in-smooth-cognac-and-espresso-suede

I also just use a plain key ring with no ornamentation for my house and office keys. It's just a 1" diameter steel ring of the standard variety. It has 6 keys on it, one of which (now that I look at it) I have no idea about, so I guess it will be down to 5 keys.
My automobile is "keyless", and I keep the activator separately in my pocket.
Good luck!

I use one plain ring and have got all of my locks keyed alike so I only need to carry 2 keys :thumbup1:

Right now I keep my keys on a standard ring that sits on a metal carabiner type clip. Unfortunately I'm feeling like a janitor with my keys right now: 1 for home, 2 for the office, 1 for the safe in my car, 1 for my car, a remote for my car, and 1 of those monster key + remote things for my wife's car.

I use just a plain old fashioned steel ring. I supply the ornament: my dog's first id tag.
Same as everyone else. A steel ring with my apartment key and the garage key. I also have an Inka pen (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/98ce/). It's great to always have a pen on me, especially when I need to sign something and people can't find one.

I have 4 different key rings. I don't like the bulk in my pocket, and I don't like the additional weight on the ignition of my truck.
Ring 1- I always carry a plain ring with my truck key, a house key, and keyless entry for my truck.
Ring 2- Work truck key, tool box key, and key to office. This key ring never leaves the truck unless I'm in the office or in a store and actually lock the truck (not often).
Ring 3- Church Key Ring. Church van, church bus, main door, door to sound booth, and to van garage.
Ring 4- Various keys including, but not limited to post office box, various master keys (gates and various other uses), parents house and shop keys, keys to things I don't even know about, but will use from time to time. This key ring usually stays in my personal truck cup holder.

I only have three keys on my ring. The problem is that I also carry a fob to lock,unlock/locate my truck. Funny story. Went on a date once and wanted to go with the streamline pants look, so I left the fob at home. When it came time to open the truck door for my date, I discovered there is no lock on the passenger side. Had to go back around, open the truck from the driver side, hit the unlock button and then go around again and open the door for her. So much for chivalry. The next day I noted the rear doors and tailgate have no locks on them either. Who was the genious who came up with this idea? 2005 Ford Explorer.

Plain Steel Ring with office keys, thumb drive, and bottle opener.
Car keys go on a ring attached to an "ID Wallet" with the Driver's License. Can't start the car without it.
Here's mine.

I segregate mine because it's not necessary to keep all keys together. This keeps down the clutter and bulk.
- One exclusively for car/truck keys. In right pocket.
- One on a chain for house, etc. in left pocket. It has a duplicate of auto keys, thus I never lock myself out.
- One for jobs/customers/family/etc. which stays in duffle bag that goes everywhere I go.
As I mentioned in the Eccentricities thread - I have to come up with a workable technique/system for everything.
This is what works for me.

I have this key ring (http://www.momastore.org/museum/moma/ProductDisplay_MoMA%20Key%20Ring%20Organizer_10451 _10001_11647_-1_11536_11541_null_shop_) from the NY MOMA.
I had a cheap, plastic one that lasted for years. When it broke, I couldn't find one anywhere and I had really liked it. They used to be everywhere, but I couldn't find one. Until that one. I bought 4. Just in case.
The rings can be removed/replaced by pushing a button on the back. So, on vacation, I leave the work keys at home. When I leave the car for service, I just slip off the ring with the car keys. It's really a brilliant little device.

My trick is to use two key rings, Both are simple steel rings with no doodads attached. I put each in a different pocket. One ring is for my car the other for the house. Misc keys (office, etc.) are mostly in the ring with the house key because I don't like lots of keys hanging off of the car key when driving -- they bang around against the steering column.

I have a standard 1" ring. It's got my truck key and keyless remote, house key, office key, a Hooters bottle opener, and a 3" mini maglite flash light.
It's really not quite as bulky as it sounds. I also dont wear tight pants, so I really dont notice them being in my pocket.

Oh, never mind. I just followed the link. I didn't see it because I was being mesmerized by the sparkly key ringy.

Someone else who does that, my mates think it's really odd I carry my last dogs id tags, but it reminds me of him and keeps him close.... :D
I carry my house keys separate from my car keys that way if my keys go missing, I'll either have a way home or a secure house....

I keep my car keys on a regular key ring. I don't drive very much though, I take the train to work. For my house keys, I use a key ring that I got as a gift when I graduated from high school. I'm not sure what you call the style, but it looked like this, except it had a circle with my name on it instead of the heart:

I don't think mine is from Tiffany, but it looks just like this.

I use a small metal bottle opener with my firm's logo emblazoned on the top as a key chain... it has only 3 keys - none of which are for a car. I have a bus pass and Executive Platinum status on American Airlines for transportation

To keep my keys from bulking up my pockets I put my keys in my man bag (aka murse or satchel), along with my wallet, glasses, business cards, a knife, flashlight, a pen, and a few other things. Mine is the satchel from saddleback leather, which comes with an attached leather strip with a keyring built in, which I find to be a very nice feature because it makes finding your keys in the satchel easy when it's filled up with stuff.
The man bag is very liberating as long as you're comfortable with it. There are a lot of masculine looking man bags; you can check other threads for them. Being 6 foot 4 and living in Gotham, I don't find too many people who make jokes about my man purse, but I wouldn't care much if they did. Your experiences may vary.

Another plain old key ring here. The only "ornamentation" on my ring is my hand cuff key and well, that's just another key.

Minimalist sminimalist:wink: I carry a mini-mag solitaire and a Leatherman micra on mine in addition to the keys and hang it on a carabiner in my back pocket, that way I always have a multitool and flashlight even if I forget everything else. Great tools to have as a volunteer firefighter/Emt as it seems everytime I go to check pupils somehow the penlights have grown legs and walked out of the jumpkits.

I use one of these:
http://www.bevkey.com/
Picked it up my freshman year from the NCSU school store. I keep my car key and my house key on it. Also, having a bottle opener on you at all times, I've found, is a great way to meet people at parties.

Basically industry wide, starting around 2005, as it happens. Face it, it took you four years to discover its absence, right?

Yep, took about two years give or take a month or two. Just wondering if it's a cost saver or if there's some other logic behind it. Old enough to remember when doors and ignitions weren't even keyed alike. Another thing I do to reduce bulk is take the fob and leave the keys in the console. Had a battery completely die about a week ago. Thank goodness I didn't go keyless then.

Ummm, so don't keep them in your pocket. Seriously. I have the same issue and finally got to the point where I don't keep my keys on me anymore. I put them in a jacket pocket, satchel, whatever...

I keep as few keys on it as possible, but I ALWAYS keep my keys on me. I have gotten stuck in firedrills at work before and could have gone home but my keys were in my desk. If it had been a real fire I would have been screwed.

Strictly cost savings. When all the cars come with remote fobs, the door cylinders see little to no use anyhow.
