Just got this guy off of eBay. It's a 1900/1901 model that takes standard SE blades.

It's in really good shape except that the lid is torn off of the box.

I wasn't going to buy any more GEMs but the handle on this one caught my eye.

The stropping attachment is stored inside the handle. The knurled rim at the bottom is how it screws in and out of its storage area. That knurled rim has a threaded hole in the center so that the handle can be removed from the shaving head and used as a handle for the stropping attachment.

Dang, how do you find these? I'm still trying to find a decent one on that auction site but all the ones I see are loose and I really want one with case.

Do you check the listings every day? Is this the kind of determination that is necessary?

You can do a search on eBay. Once you get the search just as you want it, save the search. eBay will run the search for you daily and email you if anything is found.

Or should I go to the morgue and get a better head? And should I be afraid of these guys?

Been on that auction site for ten years and I never thought to create a saved search. Thanks!

Ya know, that's probably why the handle caught my eye. I was going to mention that it looked strangely modern compared to the head. Got my curiosity up. It is a really nice handle and the head is in better shape than one or two of my other LCs with nice handles so I will probably swap heads.

If I stick that handle on a 1912 GEM does that make it a Deluxe?

actually the handle on your razor started turning wheels in my head, so i gave the 1912 catalouge i put up on my website a look. since the 1908 head was still in use in 1912, your set is the "popular set" that was priced @ $1.00. case and razor are both correct :001_smile

I'm glad Dave got his second post in here ahead of me, 'cause I'd hate to argue with the master :blushing:, but I thought that was a valid handle on the razor.

Very nice, Bob. I love the scroll embossing on those '08 heads.

By the way, all the Gem Jr. Bar razors were designed for the "modern" type blades.

Tom

Nice score!! Its a real show-piece!

That would be a neat project for some of the vendors (cooncat; pureslab; mer) to take on, to recreate something like that from scratch. I bet it would be a snap for them to replicate. And I bet it would sell like crazy, especially if it could be engineered to hold (at least half) a DE blade.

I wasn't going to buy any more GEMs but the handle on this one caught my eye.

See, they knew about the Balance Point Method (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Balance_Point_Method) even way back then.

Sorry, no deal. Lather Catchers are my only collectibles.

Well, I find I have accumulated a bunch of straights but that's more in the mode of looking for a favorite than starting a collection.
