View Full Version : Shark Super Chromes Dragging?

I can't seem to get a smooth shave out of the Shark Chromes. I have heard such great things about them, but they seem to pull a lot. I use them in my Slim. For those of you who like them, what razor do you use them in?
I have used Shark blades in the following Gillette razors:
SS
Slim
Knack
Tech
I get the better shave from the slim but I find them just a little less sharp than Feathers. For the Price it is hard to beat.
Not sure why you are having difficulty,

Hmmm. And it's been more than one blade. I find the red ips to be a lot sharper.

Ive got the Shark SC and the Shark SS neither drag, thats one complaint I can't say I have, mine is the fact I get irritation something fierce and have problems with the SC rusting.
Also, I don't know how you can say that a Red IP is sharper......its quite the opposite.

Hmmm I found the Chromes to be quite smooth, I usually use them in my HD though. It is worth noting that I have found the same brand of blade to perform differently in different razors though.

different blades for different faces...Derbys and Crystals drag quite a bit for me, but red ips and sharks are quite nice

I'm using a Merkur 23c razor and I've found them to be a little rough for the first shave out of the pack. Not exactly tugging on the beard, but noticeably less smooth than a fresh Derby or a fresh Super Iridium. However, for me subsequent shaves with the same blade become much smoother and enjoyable.

I've just used my first "Shark" blade. It will be my last "Shark" blade. I threw out the rest of the five blade sample pack.
The first issue was the packaging. The blade was thoroughly glued in four spots to its paper wrapper. Clearly, this was overkill.
I've been wet shaving for almost two months. I converted most recently to DE shaving. My first DE blade was a Derby. It was OK, but not spectacular. My second blade was the "Super+" or "Crystal" Israeli blade. If I was not expecting to receive Feathers, I'd probably go back to the "Super+" and stick with it.
The "Shark" was a total write-off from the moment I scraped it down my right cheek. The Shark blade was anything but smooth. I should have stopped using it right then and there.

Never have had a problem with the Sharks dragging.
I've used them in dozens of vintage Gillette razors.
YMMV, of course, and Your Own Mileage May Vary over time. Blades that I thought were the bee's knees when I was beginning to use a DE have lost some luster, and blades I thought were flawed have turned out to be OK.
Same goes for razors. Funny how those nasty open comb facebiters have become excellent shavers with just a little more age.
I hate glue on blades, BTW, and the glue on the Sharks I've used has been pretty tame. Wait until you see the mounds of sticky stuff on other blades, sometimes going out to the cutting edge! Hey Astra, I'm talking to you!
Even if I hated a blade, I'd never toss 'em. Always nice to throw them in with your BST transactions, as something that is awful with your combination of face, razor and technique might be just the ticket for somebody else.

Man don't throw the unused ones away. Use them for a PIF or BST. Let someone get some use out of them as many here do use them.

Preach on, brother!
That's one of the reasons I switched to Kai blades. No. glue. at. all. :w00t:

+1 on not throwing blades out. There will always be someone else who will want them.
I have used Shark Chrome, and I love them. It is sharp and smooth to me, and I will by more in the future.
I have used the Shark Super Chrome in my Parker 22r, and received fantastic shaves with them in my Blue Tip.

I'v used them in my Parker 91r, Lord Smart, Fatboy, New and '57 SS. Smooth, comfortable and wonderful for me.
Guess that's why "YMMV" applies in all things shaving

The last two Shark Super Stainless blades I've used were in a Super Adjustable set at 3 and 4. Six very smooth close shaves in each case. I could have gone for more shaves from each blade, but it was the end of the week and a good time to retire the blade and start the next week with a new blade.
The first Shark SS blade I tried was in a Tech, and it gave eight shaves, though the last one was perhaps pushing it.
The complaints about rust I've seen on the Sharks seem mostly with the Super Chromes. There may have been a subtle change in the steel used when Lord discontinued the Chrome and went to the Stainless, among other things.
I haven't tried a Super Chrome, and don't intend to with the good results I'm getting with the Super Stainless. Whatever differences there may be besides the name, they may be no more if as much as differences in users.
As alway, YMMV.

I think that I have discovered something different about these various makes of blades, which (to my mind) goes a long way toward explaining different experiences. Please read my posting entitled "Razor Blade Dimensions - A Plausible Explanation".

That may be why Derbys don't work for me. Their edge-to-edge width is second only to Sputniks.
There is a good article about edge-to-edge width, with measurements of various blades, on a Web site that is unfortunately banned from this message board.

I received some as freebies with an order of 7o'clock blades (thanks Bull Goose!). I tried the Shark Super Chrome in my Fatboy and I had a weird skipping sensation. It sort of knocked me off my rhythm and I ended up with a small nick on chin. I grabbed my Slim with an old 7 o'clock blade and finished up without any more drama. I've only used the one Shark so I don't want to jump to any conclusions. I immediately changed out the Shark SC for a fresh 7 o'clock. I might try the Sharks again, maybe I got a bum one, but I'm not sure if they're for me.

I really wish a blade would last me for a week! Against my beard, a blade is superb if it lasts past a 3rd shave. Maybe that is why I don't have any rust issues with the Sharks. LOL.
