Hi guys, i just had my first DE shave using a '68 superspeed with derby blades + col conk soap

the shave itself wasnt too bad, not as hair raising as it kind of seemed to be after reading this forums, a little bit of irritation around the neck/jawline which i was expecting thanks to my topographic face but nothing visible.

my big two problems are - the small size of the brush handle kind of makes my hand hurt while foaming up

but more importantly, my foam just creeps up the sides of the bowl and escapes! i end up with it all up the brush, on my hands etc etc, its kind of messy.
the bowl is just what seems to be an asian rice bowl from the $2 shop..

what do you guys use?

I use a deep cereal bowl, and have the same issue. I won't call it a problem, because as you swirl around that lather, it has to go somewhere. Just push it all back down into the bowl, and keep doing that. Those plunges help mix the lather together, along with the typical swirling method. See Mantic's videos on lather to see how he deal with lathers. I find myself going back to many of his videos to check myself.

Welcome, and good luck.

Throw the bowl and face lather. You really get better shaves and better lather this way.

I've gone fron a $2 rice bowl (bit too small), to a plastic cereal bowl (very good), and now use a wide mouth soup mug from a kitchen store, because I wanted something with a handle.

You can get shave specific mugs and bowls from shave vendors online, but they can be a bit pricey for what they are.

Anything will do really, so long as it's not too narrow and has some depth to keep the lather in while building.

welcome to B&B
I use a rice bowl and yes, lather tends to migrate. But oh well... scoop it up, mix it back in and carry on. Hey, it's only soap.

I use a lather bowl from Dirty Bird Pottery. The lip of the bowl curves in, helping to contain the lather in the bowl. It's a luxury item, but I like it.

Soaps + Face lather = Art is King!

You might need a bigger bowl. I have something that might be 12cm diameter by 7-8cm high, works well!

I started off with a mug, then a rice bowl and had the same issues so now i have a white cereal bowl bought from wilkinsons here in the uk for 0.50p which is deep and white and perfect for building up a nice lather which stays in the bowl :001_smile

I use a latte mug, the lather creeps up the side but the mug is just deep enough for it not to come out.

Ravi

Plus 1 on the face lather.

I bowl lathered about twice before finding the pleasure of the face lather :thumbup1:

Welcome.

I mostly use a mug. $1.50 from the Salvos store.

I use a fractal bowl, ever since Scotto proved that it the ideal shape to enhance lathering.

Congrats on your first shave. When I bowl lather (I also face lather sometimes) I used a shallow flat bottomed bowl and don't have any issues.

Hey I used to have one of those (one of the older unstable models) but I ended up dropping it on the floor and it smashed and left quarks and leptons all over the place...the wife was not happy about that. Not exactly the easiest things to find, especially when they get into the bath mat and roll under the towel rack. Never again.

I face-lather or occasionally use an old spice mug (my brush has a 24mm knot and no lather escapes)
