I grew up eating Cream of Wheat being from the NE. Now that I live in the South I find that either people never heard of Cream of Wheat or they have but really dislike it.
I am wondering what you all prefer for breakfast time. I admit grits are used in a variety of dishes (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) vs Cream of Wheat I have only seen used as a hot cereal for breakfast.
I like both but I have to give the edge to Cream of Wheat for taste.

Grits with bacon and cheese and a side of scrambled eggs is a great way to start a morning.
I've had Cream of Wheat, but that was as a kid. I haven't eaten it in years. Nowadays, I prefer oatmeal.

Well I am both a Texan and in TX, but have never heard of it.
Maybe you are thinking Malt-o-meal? Kinda like Cream-o-wheat.

Grits are really versatile and are suitable for any meal. With so many ways to prepare them, Grits are the clear winner in my book.

I don't know that cream of wheat is technically illegal down in Georgia but I wouldn't want to test it.

Grits with a poached egg and bacon grease. I came up north to New England with the love of grits. Cream of wheat is for newborns

I know they are versatile but my poll is not for versatility but for taste only at breakfast.

Its funny how Southerners are so angry towards the north still. Just joking :tongue_sm but seriously Northerners don't hold any hatred towards grits but Southerners hate cream of wheat?? I don't get it.

What...no vote for Scottish Oats? Its almost like either grits or cream of wheat and I prefer it to both. Given the limitations of the vote, though, I would have to go with cream of wheat...a bit more fiber and complex carbs than corn with all those simple sugars.

It's not hatred so much. There's a lot of variability in grits. In my experience a whole lot more than cream of wheat. It's also a consistency and texture thing.
As a general rule, if your grits remind you of cream of wheat then you haven't made them right.

never really cared for cream of wheat, though I have acquired a bit more of a taste for it, since my wife loves the stuff, especially when she's sick.
They're a bit too sweet for me, when they're doctored up. No discernible taste not doctored up, that I can tell.
Growing up in the South, Grits (see the capital "G" it deserves? :biggrin1:) FTW!
(BTW, my wife only ever had grits with sugar - basically done like cream of wheat...where's the barfy smiley?)

I'm from Canada, which is cream of wheat country - BUT I've developed a taste for grits to the point where I won't eat cream of wheat any more.
Its important to note that not all grits are created equal and if you've only ever had the quick grits, you haven't had real grits - the slow cook grits sold by many small producers are far superior in terms of both taste and texture.
That being said, I prefer steel cut oats or buckwheat groats (kasha) for breakfast.

When I'm feeling crappy, a bowl of cream of wheat with brown sugar and butter, and a day on the couch is just what the doctor ordered.

I guess it is way too late but I should have done this poll using a more apples to apples comparison. Grits vs cream of wheat just as a breakfast cereal (milk and sugar). Or plain with nothing on.
Grits always seemed like a crappy sandy cream of wheat (I like grits too).
It is hard to have a comparison of Cream of Wheat as a hot cereal vs Grits loaded up with cheese, bacon, shrimp, eggs, sausage, lard, etc

I love all three equally. Three? Yeah, someone mentioned steel cut oats and I haven't touched a rolled oat since. Fantastic stuff. I love cream of wheat and grits too. Heck, I reckon I love most of the grain cereals. Something that makes cream of wheat better to me is fixing it with milk rather than water. I use skim but only because I am trying to keep my waistline smaller. I also mix the milk and cereal grains together along with a pinch of salt and then bring them to the boil and stir and cook them for a minute or so. I alternate keep the pan first on, the off the burner once they get to the boil. This keeps them(and mostly the milk) from scalding. Then let it rest for a few minutes to thicken. It is almost like eating pudding. I love grits too. I can't really find the normal, slow cooking grits around here though.

Either or depending on the mood.
Grits is good as part of a larger meal, be it breakfast or any other meal. Of course I'm Italian, so we'll eat polenta with damn near anything about as fast as pasta.
Cream of wheat is good as well but typically more the meal itself then part of the meal. Course, some gnocchi alla romana puts me in a right spot everytime too.
Of well, it's all gruel in the end
I like either one. There are very few hot cereals I don't like. There's just something about hot cereal that makes a winter morning enjoyable.
I like either one equally, so it depends on my mood as to which one I want. But then, I grew up eating various hot cereals. This morning it was Cream of Wheat.
I want my Maypo!

Hominy.
I'm a grits purist. Butter and salt only. Anything else added is a mortal sin. They also must be served on a plate and eaten with a fork. Anything else is uncouth.

In the morning I'll have liver pudding with grits.
For supper I'll make shrimp and grits.
A place to get stone ground grits... Palmettofarms.com
I still add jelly to my grits.

I grew up on all 3, as well, and still enjoy them all and think each has their own place and time.
Folks 'round here eat their grits in a number of ways: cheese & bacon grits, shrimp grits, butter w/salt & pepper, or with scrambled/fried eggs mixed in (including my wife, and now my daughter, who are NC gals).
I like them in the traditional manner (butter w/salt & pepper) but also enjoy mine with a little sugar sprinkled on top, or with some maple syrup. Maybe it's because of my exposure to cream of wheat, I don't know. But I still eat them this way on occasion, even after spending the last 13 years in the Carolinas.
But it's funny doing it in public because I'm often asked: "Are you from Ohio?". Are we Buckeyes the only ones who put sugar or syrup on grits? And I'm guessing it's just those of us down on the Ohio River that eat them, as the rest of the state condiders us WV/KY (they call us "Briars")...
What I find odd, however, is that fans of grits typically don't like hominy. I like to fry my hominy up in the same traditional manner, with butter, salt and pepper.

I eat them all grits, malt-o-meal, cream of wheat, coaco wheat, oatmeal
They are all staples in my book. What I eat depends on my mood and where I am at at the time. In the midwest it is hard to find decent grits, so your option is oatmeal. When I am down south, I eat all the grits I can get, with most any topping.
For me it is the same with Fish When in the gulf region I eat seafood, When im home in Michigan, I fill up on Salmon, Lake Perch, Lake Trout. Here in Illinois I skip fish all together.

If you eat at a Bob Evans restaurant (headquartered in Ohio) you can order fried cornmeal mush for your breakfast.

I like grits, cream of wheat and malt-o-meal, but nothing beats frying your bacon first then using the bacon grease to fry up a couple of eggs and some hashbrowns with some grits on the side to add a healthy balance. Don't forget the cat head biscuits.

How 'bout some Grillades with those grits? Bacon fat adds a certain je ne sais quoi to them too.

I grew up on Cream of Wheat, grits, and oatmeal.
I still put sugar and butter on my grits, but only if I'm having them for breakfast--cheese grits served with fish get the salt and pepper treatment. I also prefer Cream of Wheat made with milk rather than water. Growing up I ate a lot more Cream of Wheat than grits for breakfast, mostly because it is easier to make than grits (instant grits are horrid). I've not had CoW in years, and the rare occasions I have grits are when we go out for breakfast.
I voted grits. Cream of Wheat is for kids, as has been noted. Cheese grits with ham or ham grits with cheese. doesn't matter. I prefer mine with salt and butter.
The late blogger AcidMan once said that if you're sick and can't eat anything, you can always eat grits.
I have found this to very true.

The trouble with this thread is I get hungry every time I look.
How come nobody has mentioned country ham and redeye gravy? It is the only thing that makes grits edible.

Grits is an aboriginal American corn-based food common in the Southern United States, consisting of coarsely ground corn.
Grits is similar to other thick maize-based porridges from around the world such as polenta. It also has a resemblance to farina, a thinner porridge. The word leads back to the traditional Northern European grit gruels. Grits can be served hot or cold and as a base for a multitude of dishes from breakfast to dessert, depending on the additives. Additives can include salt and butter, meats (especially shrimp on the east or gulf coast), cheese, rarely (but in nouvelle Southern cuisine) vegetables, and sugar. It is also common for people from above the Mason-Dixon Line to have sugar with their grits.
Hominy grits is grits made from nixtamalized corn, or hominy. It is sometimes called sofkee or sofkey from the Creek word.

I know this English guy who was driving around in the South. And he stopped for breakfast one morning somewhere in southeast Georgia. He saw “grits” on the menu. He’d never heard of grits so he asked the waitress, “What are grits, anyway?” She said, “Grits are fifty.” He said, “Yes, but what are they?” She said, “They’re extra.” He said, “Yes, I’ll have the grits, please.”

I'm a big fan of both Cream of Wheat and grits. I'd have to give the edge ot grits though. Not only are they great with breakfast (with butter salt and pepper, cheese if able) Grits also go well with shrimp or even smoked mullet (the fish not the hairdo )

I remember having grits once in the past and it was very yellow and had that real corn taste to it. But my parents live in the US now and I bought some Quaker Grits when I was down there, and honestly it tastes almost the same as Cream of Wheat. There doesn't seem to be a ton of difference between them.
I prefer just plain old oatmeal to either, both Cream of Wheat and grits aren't very healthy, they have almost no fiber and are very fast digesting carbs, I like to get the large flake oatmeal which is apparantly the best for you.

Since starting on steel cut oats, I haven't touched a bowl of grits or oatmeal for breakfast. I still like grits with other meals though (shrimp and grits!!).
I make a batch of steel cut oats with some dried fruit in the slow cooker on the weekend and eat them all week. Tasty!
