These Heirlooms are always some of my favorites to do, when Brad contacted me with his Grandfathers razor, I was hoping I could get it back up and running...

The razor is a Joseph Allen & sons Medium Hollow Ground Razor 5/8 Barbers Notch.. The old scales were trashed, and the razor had some of it's age showing... After buffing out the steel, Brad decided on Olivewood scales, which have to be one of my favorites to work on, super tight grain, and almost waterproof before you even seal them.. These have 8 coats of hand rubbed Tru-Oil on them and have a real satin sheen to them...
The wedge is Senegal Ebony and the hardware is pure brass...

I hope you like it Brad she will be heading home in the morning after a test shave....

BRAVO! I always enjoy seeing your work. Now it is ready for another 100 plus years of heirloom enjoyment.

That looks fantastic. I have the exact same blade that I am in the process of restoring, myself. A question about the Tru oil. Will that have to be re-oiled periodically? I really like the looks of that instead of sealing it.

Oh no it is sealed, Tru-oil is a tung oil??? varnish?? something else mix???
This is the same finish as you find on many Rifle Stocks except it is about 3 times thicker...

Oh. Thanks for clearing that up. I have a lot to learn about woodworking yet, especially when it comes all the different ways of treating wood. I guess when I saw 'oil' I was thinking something along the lines of teak oil or the likes.

It didn't even occur to me until now that you live in Idaho. Groc, I'm guessing you do, too? I live in MT, but I'm in eastern MT. Same region, though, right? Is the "great white north" in Idaho as white as eastern Montana is right now? We have already had about three snowstorms this year (not big, though) over here.

Anyway, have you guys found any stores that sell shaving gear over there? I've looked all over in Billings and Rapid City, but to no avail.

I unfortunately just moved to Utah and miss Idaho already. I'm from SE Idaho though. I loved it there! Sandpoint is a nice area too, been there a couple of times. I've been to eastern MT a few times too, specifically Billings and thought the area was beautiful (of course that wasn't in the winter...yikes!). Only shaving gear I've found in Idaho is at Walmart and antique stores :)
