I have a vacation coming up this weekend with my family. I do not want to be without my morning shave with my Merkur. Problem is I have soaps for home use, but nothing in a soap or cream to take on the road. I haven't tried a cream, and really like the brush and soap.
Anyone have suggestions on a good solution to this problem. Any good soaps for travel or should I just go with a cream? Any recommendations on brands?

I take two soaps, two razors, two brushes and a few small bottles of aftershave with me when I travel.
This trip it's Wilkinson Sword and TOBS Lavender soaps, A President and a Red Tip DE, an Omega Boar and a Tweezerman Badger brush, Lilac Vegetal and Aqua Velva AS.
Travel can be rough, why be without your beloved gear in a strange place. It brings a sense of normalcy to the whole thing.
A small Dopp Kit is all it takes to make the whole shebang work.

Yep shavestick or perhaps Col Conk travel soap (http://www.colconkproducts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=30&zenid=nde2qkiur8e964ukao5dm77an7):

Use the VDH deluxe kit. Give the brush to the kids to play with and you have a bowl and soap that works great!
How are you traveling? When I fly, it's a minimal setup. When I drive, I take as much as I like.

Get thee a shave stick. Preferably Irisch Moos.
Get yourself a small tube of Proraso or CO Bigelow cream and bring a brush or two. If you like Soaps, bring a sliver or two and a mug.
I am readjusting my kit this week as well.
It's good to be prepared,

Quite often I'll just pack my tub of Proraso, the white tub. It fits into my dopp kit with ease. I take both my straight bar and open comb Merkur travel razor, and my Dovo travel brush. I can pack a couple of extra blades in each tiny leather pouch of the travel razors. Everything fits into the dopp kit. Whenever I travel my great shaves go with me. :w00t: :thumbup1:
I would go with a cheap shaving soap or cream such as Bigelow/Proraso. A boar brush and maybe a Gillette Tech just in case something happens. If one or all items are missing, it won't be so shattering!
Shave sticks are great for travelling!

I usually travel with a tub of TOBS cream. But I can't think of any reason why you couldn't travel with your favorite puck of soap. Any megalomart will have decent screw top jar for maybe a couple of bucks. If you don't like that a tube of cream or shave stick would work nicely and they look convenient, however for my money I would get a decent jar for travel as opposed to spending on travel soaps, specialty brushes, ect.
edit: You do use a brush with creams too BTW.

When I travel, first thing I do is lower my standards ... I don't even try to get to BBS. A close, comfortable shave and looking presentable is all that I need. If I can get a DFS day out of it, so much the better, but its not critical.
I pack along a good face soap, a handful of samples of shaving creams and ASBs, a pack of Astra-SP, a razor, and that's about it. I don't need a brush. I don't need PSOs or ASLs or anything except the bare essentials. I might buy a bottle of generic Witch Hazel once I reach my destination, and just leave it behind when I pack up to return home.
The razor I take with me is usually one I have duplicates of. Last trip it was a Gillette Adjustable H2, and I wound up giving it to my friend that I was visiting. Next trip, it will be a Satin Futur.
One thing to keep in mind about your travel kit: Don't take along anything that you can't afford to lose.

Lord, I was born a traveling man,
Trying to take a razor and doing the best I can.
And when its time for shaving,
I hope you'll understand,
That I was born a traveling man.
Well I took my favorite Super Speed to Georgia,
I wound up doing something really dumb.
I left my entire dopp kit on the seat of a greyhound bus
Rollin down highway 41.
Lord, I was born a traveling man,
Trying to narrow down my products and doing the best I can.
And when its time for shaving,
I hope you'll understand,
That I was born a traveling man.
I'm on my way to New Orleans this morning,
Out of nowhere I catch the smell of cat pee,
I sat down on my bottle of Lilac Vegetal,
Lord, them delta women won't get anywhere near me.
Lord, I was born a traveling man,
Trying to make a shavestick with Williams and a frying pan.
The TSA, they took my blades,
They just don't understand,
That I'm a wet shaving, traveling man.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
Really, this is an excuse to exercise your AD and get yourself a vintage travel kit....

I got some soap samples from Kell's and they fit in the hotel freebie soap tins:biggrin:
I've also used creams while travelling.
A travel brush is also nice:

Might look at getting a travel razor later (before restore pic):

Polished it a bit:

I just take the basics any of my DE razors, CO Bigelow tube, glycerin bar in travel container.
I am currently spending time & money to find the perfect travel case and set up and to pick the travel razor that best suits me.

I haven't had occasion to travel as a DE shaver yet, but when I start traveling with my kit, it'll be for business, meaning I need to have the capability for a DFS in my bag. I think it'll all fit, but I have a tangential question; if you're taking your kit in a carry-on bag, does the TSA give you a hard time about having blades in your bag? Also, I'll be staying away from tubs, as the 3 oz. ban will like get them confiscated.

DE blades are a no-no on planes. I normally check my luggage or use a Sensor :blushing: when traveling with only the carry on.

Blades aren't allowed, and the TSA will take them. When I fly, I usually take a Sensor Excel instead of my DE. If you really want the DE experience, you can either mail blades to your hotel ahead of time (they should keep them for you until you arrive), or find the nearest WalMart/CVS/Walgreens when you arrive and pick up a cheap pack of US Personnas.

Darn TSA. :crying: Thanks, Mr. E. Sounds like the WalMart/CVS/Walgreens route would be the way to go.

shaving sticks - perfect for travel
+1. Shave stick does the job.
I got a travel kit from Target, the "Every Man Jack" brand, for under $10. It contains a 2 in 1 shampoo, hydrating face wash, post-shave face lotion, and a SPF-15 face lotion, all under 2 ounces so no problem there with size or space.
If you carry on a plane, all liquids and gels must be no more than 3 ounces, and must fit into a quart size Ziploc bag.
