We have really hard water in my area...I'm told we're sitting on top of a vast underground lake and limestone. I'm also rather cheap. So, after rediscovering my old shaving mug, I had an excuse to try Williams and a similar brand of soap available at Wal Mart (the name of which I now forget). I've been able to shave ok with them but no matter how I whipped it, neither lathered up for me very well...thin and runny, like whipped cream 10 minutes after being squirted out of the can.

Last week the wife bought me a sample set of 4711 cologne. The bottle came with three smallish bars of soap. The smell was nice - I love citrus - so on a whim I dropped one of the bars into the soap mug.

Result: at least 2x the lather I got from either of the pucks; richer and thicker in consistency, too. Plus the nicer smell, and definitely more of a moisturized feeling afterward.

It still is not as good of a lather as many products you guys use but, as I said, I'm cheap and will use whatever works. Now all three bars are going to be stocked as my go-to for lather until they run out (wife doesn't care - she didn't like the scent). Then I'll get more, if I can get it cheap.

If you happen to have some laying around, you might want to try it. Beats Williams and the other WM stuff, I'll tell you that.

I wonder how well Irish Spring lathers up in a mug...hmmmm....

So... we should be on the lookout for smallish bars of soap that smell like citrus?

Sorry I wasn't clearer - they're soaps made by the people who make 4711 cologne (it's German, I think). You can get both from eebay, but I found a gigantic bottle of the stuff at a drug store recently.

If it works GREAT! For some reason, I have a problem with lathering the VDH and Col. Conk. I've put them aside for now and plan on coming back to it once shaving zen is found.

SWMBO has a huge basket of those small decorative hand soaps in the bathroom, I wonder.....

Oh, and how is the cologne?

Wife has lots of them little soaps laying around, too. Most of them seem really cheaply made - from made in China holiday gift baskets...they could be recycled crayons and red dye #5 for all I know. But where would we be without bold, even reckless experimentation? Living in caves and NOT SHAVING, that's where! :)

I was looking at the ingredient list on my Irish Spring. Did not know it had tallow. Was joking with my wife that I should try and lather it up.
