Hey guys,
I want to start practicing my honing skills, but i only have one razor, and i don't want to mess it up. Where can i get a cheap razor that won't be a b*tch to hone up? I'm cruising around ebay, but everything around $10 looks like junk, and I would need to spend $20 just for a practice blade. Am I just stingy, or is this a waste of money for a razor I don't really like/want for just practicing?

Anyone looking to dump a basic/simple/cheap straight to me for cheap? It doesn't need to be asthetically pleasing, just a non-rusted, straight blade that wont have me cursing it out for being a pain to sharpen.

I'll return it if you want in a couple months.

Get the junky looking razors. They clean up pretty easily with some metal polish. Don't bother wasting extra money if you only want a razor to practice your honing. Just make sure that the razor isn't too bad in terms of hone wear or chips on the edge.

Hi Fred,

I'm also new. Untill two weeks ago I was in the same boat. I wanted to practice honing but didn't want to damage my new Dovo razor.

I bought two old razors off of E-bay for 10$ each and they have been perfect for the job. They aren't anything special, just a couple of old razors that a barber would have used up and thrown away. My only requirement was that they have a straight edge with no visible nicks or chips. I have done four long honing sessions with those two razors and tonight I just succeeded in getting the second one shaving sharp.

I see razors like these all the time on e-bay. In fact I have two more razors, one for 6$ and a little nicer one for 16.50 that should be arriving tomorrow. Just keep checking, and you should have no problem. If you don't want to do that then I'm sure if you post this in the For sale/trade forum of this site or straightrazorplace.com you will find what you are looking for. Of course, many of the razors that are owned by forum members will probably be honed already so e-bay may be your best bet after all.
