View Full Version : What is The Best Canned Goo?

Simple question.
What is the best canned goo?
Unfortunately in my line of work bringing a brush and cream/soap to training events is not possible or rather inconvenient. So in these instances I will have to revert to using canned goo. But which one is better. There has to be a respectable one out there somewhere.

+1 on the Cream. Even a tube of C.O. Bigelow (Proraso) just rubbed in would be better.
Asking which canned goo is best to use for shaving is like asking which finger is best to whack with your hammer.
While there may be a correct answer, none are so correct as to avoid the pain.

As far as canned creams, I like the Noxzema. Neutrogena also makes a very good brushless cream in a tube. The C. O. Bigelow cream and gels also work good brushless. I find any of these work fine in travel situations. I usually use the Neutrogena. Of course, YMMV. Alan

Shave stick and a travel brush. Takes less space and more air travel friendly than an aerosol can.
If you have to have a can, I'd just buy whatever travel size your exchange has on sale.
I know it's a blood heresy here, but the foam in a can really isn't the end of the world. I'd be sure to give it extra time on the face, so you really aren't saving time over face-lathering with a shaving stick, but you can get decent shaves with the stuff.
I used to use Edge before I found a better way, and it gave me some very good results.

shave creams might be a good alternative for you. C.O Bigelow was mentioned. I have used Neutrogena Men Skin Clearing Shave cream is what I had handy for travelling. Also Kiss My Face in a tube might be something to check out as well. Any of those 3 can be applied without a brush.
Last canned stuff I used was Gillette Fusion hydragel. Wasn't bad, just not as nice as what I have experienced lately.

Never really gave much thought about brushless creams. I mentioned canned goo because on training exercises time is a luxury and time spent shaving is not a luxury I have.
Forgive me but I even thought about an electric razor.
Since in my job and vehicle I would be able to recharge the razor with ease.
Electric might be a good alternative since it would give my face "healing time" where as canned goo would just irritate it more.
Any suggestions on a rechargeable electric razor?

Where's the stake and the firewood!!!:lol:
It's a fair cop.
Hey, if you're going to light that pile of wood, could you heat up some water while you're at it?
Seriously, a guy stands more chance of not getting booed off the stage here if they talk about using a cartridge razor than a (shudder) can of shaving cream.
:shaving:
See, it's not so bad. Not as good as a brush and any soap or cream, but not life threatening.
As to the OP's Q about (GASP!) electric razors, get yourself a Braun Pocket Twist for about $20...it runs on two AA batteries and will do a decent job on the fly. It's perfect for that emergency shave..."Hey, the CO wants to see you!" You could spend bigger bucks for a rechargeable beard buzzer, but why, when you are only going to use it in a tight spot? I've got a $70 Braun 5610 from my days of ignorance, and all it does now is take up space. For an electric it wasn't terrible.
Take your Bigelow cream, or better yet, get a shave stick and take a brush. If you don't want to risk your regular brush, get a Tweezerman or even a VDH Boar at the exchange.
If you have some time, shave DE with your brush and Bigelow cream, face lathering. All is bliss.
If you are short of time, shave DE with your Bigelow cream, creating a lather with your fingers. Still good.
If you are really rushed, grab the $20 Braun and shave on the fly. Not good, but it works.

Try EO Shave Foam. It's surprising, and takes a little different technique to get used to, but is great for a quick shave. Uses the "foaming hand soap" type pump mechanism. Great lubricant, and cleans up easy. Not drying like canned goo.

If you absolutely must use a can, try the tabac one. At least it smells great.

Noxzema, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Nivea, Proraso, Kiss My Face, Trader Joe's (Alba), Cremo. Canned, brushless all will give you an excellent shave.

Nivea isn't bad for canned goo.

Canned gels: Aveeno, then Nivea
Tubed gels: King of Shaves.
Brushless creams: The Real Shaving Company, Nancy Boy, Kiss My Face, Creamo.
Creams that are meant to be lathered with a brush, but work pretty well without one: Proraso/Bigelow, any Trumper's, any T&H.
These are all viable choices that will give you a reasonably comfortable shave. If I had to choose just one, I would either go with the King of Shaves gel or The Real Shaving Company cream.

Well, if you need something in a can, you can get shaving cream that comes in a little dispenser. Just look for travel kits. I took one to the field a while ago but I didn't bring my razor in fear of it getting damaged so I used a Mach3.
But I was up all night on gate guard and so I poured water out of my canteen into a canteen cup and then sat it on the generator that was powering the lights for a while.
Then I took the MRE wrapper and tore it open with my Leatherman, squirted some cream onto it and got started with a lather. I had a little cheap travel boars hair brush.
It wasnt the best shave and but it satisfied me a little. Also, at helped keep me awake which was good when a certain bunch of people turned up later :001_smile

I would say the Aveno gel. I have been using it off, and on as a pre-shave, and the other day had run out of lather before I was able to complete my blade buffering.
Decided what the heck, and used some of the Aveno, found it to be surprising slick, and it smells quite pleasant as well (which is a vast improvement over the chemical smelling Edge for example).

Aveeno is fantastic and smells great (almond/cherry smell).
Barbasol has a nice creamy lather, but the smell was a bit off.
I would choose answer D. "None of the above"

I keep a can of barborsol for those morning where the lather just isn't right anf I'm in a rush. It works well enough to get the job done in a pinch.

How about a brushless cream. Anything but canned goo!!!!!+1 ... I get great results without a brush. I even apply some soaps directly to my wet face and rub up a good lather by hand.
You should also check out the combo-products, like Jack Black Beard Lube. It functions as a pre-shave, lather, and ASB all in one tube ... so you have a lot less gear to pack. It works quite well for a traveling shave-den.

Wow... The Shavemate Titan. Is that mean to be a disposable or are there cream cartridges for that thing?

Wow... The Shavemate Titan. Is that mean to be a disposable or are there cream cartridges for that thing? Its disposable. Each gives about 5~7 shaves.
I have two of them in my collection, but I've never actually shaved with it. Why bother, when there are so many real creams and soaps and DE razors for me to choose from.

I had Good luck with Aveeno Sensitive skin canned goo, and with the Neutrogena (all types). I've tried a few of the female gels as well, figuring they would be better for snesitive skin - and most perfomed well.
Back when I bought those cans (at $3.99 a can!) I thought I was "Premium" shaving. LOL - I have come out of the darkness.
I used to buy Barbasol for $0.99/can - Great value there as well, as the shave is decent and the price is right.

Aubrey Organics makes a line of latherless shave cream called Men's Stock with a variety of flavors. I have the Spice Island scent. I found that the scent lasted quite a while as well. When I first purchased this and took it home to use, I thought that it would lather. It didn't and I was put off by it at first. I realized after the second use of this stuff that it has AWESOME lubrication properties. A little bit goes a long way. I use a 1918 Gillette open comb, which is, compared to my superspeed, quite aggressive. If you don't practice with a delicate hand or have a good lubricating soap/cream, you can tair your face apart with that razor. I use the Men's Stock and it makes the razor glide across my face without skipping or scratching. I even mix a dollup of this product into my lather bowl and combine it with my soap to get a rich and milky lather. This product comes in 6 oz tubes. I purchased it at Sprouts, which is a grocery chain here in the Phoenix area. It is just as easy to carry and requires less preparation than even applying goo.
Hope this helps.

Go with Joe. The Trader Joe's brushless cream shaves aren't half bad -- just make sure you rinse well because they can gum up your razor a little if you don't. If you MUST have a can, I always thought Edge made the most sense, because you actually do sort of create a lather on your face, and it has less air in it than Barbasol and its ilk. I used it for 30 years before I was intriduced to the brush.

The first tube of CO Bigelow I bought was five bucks, 1.7 ounce from my local Bath and Body Works...a little pricey compared to the giant ten dollar tube on a per ounce basis, but it tucks away nicely in a travel shave kit. Kiss My Face would also be a nice traveller--sized a bit bigger, but cheap enough so that if you forget it not many tears will be shed. Good luck.

I'll add another vote for the barbasol. I was on a trip and forgot my mama bears in it's gladware container. I went down to the front desk and the lady handed me a travel can of barbasol (red I think). Used it for the whole 4 day and didn't have a problem. I agree with another poster saying to leave it on your face for a minute or so before you start your shave. It seemed to work better that way when I used it. Good luck.

I agree with the small tube of CO Bigelow, but I would bring a bar of glycerin soap. Glycerin soap can be found at most discount drug stores. Wash your face before you shave and rub the glycerin bar everywhere you need to shave, then use the CO Bigelow or Porasso on top. You will get a decent shave with that mix.
If you HAVE to use canned goo:frown:, I choose Barbasol, it is American made and it is cheap to buy and everyone carries it.

Can't we all just get along?
All this hate for poor canned goo. It's been around since 1950. I mean, it ain't no Williams when it comes to longevity, but if it was as bad as it's made out to be on these forums then the US should have a population of roughly 20 million, the rest having been killed off by canned goo poisoning in the 60's and 70's.
When I get through with the week of 40's Super Speeds I'm doing I'm going to go pick me up some Barbasol or Old Spice canned goo and go for a week of no brush shaving....I might even live to tell the tale!
Admit it, there's a little, teeny, tiny, deeply hidden part of you that likes the noise a can of Foamy makes when you are dispensing that unnatural stuff.
Somewhere, there's a Chinese badger smiling when he hears that sound. To him, it means life.
Hey, I hear those new Fusions with the spot light and landing gear are pretty good, too.

I'll throw in a vote for Cremo Cream. It's made to use brushless, and provides a very slick "lather", or really more like a thin, creamy lotion covering your face. I use it occasionally just because I like it. It's very effective in helping to get a good, close shave. The scent's pretty good, too. It's got great reviews here for its all-around performance, especially its slickness. Also, it wouldn't take up any more space than most canned shaving creams.

Use canned goo if you must, but an electric is no friend of your face!
I used electrics for 5-6 years before going traditional. I never knew what those strange bumps/ingrowns were that I was getting.....
And I was using a top of the line Panasonic wet/dry!
My vote is also for brushless cream. I recently went on a trip sans brush, and used Kiss My Face smeared on my cheeks. No romance, no pizazz, but it worked pretty durn good.

Mary Kay used to make a very nice canned cream, not a gel. Loved the scent and performed well. Not sure they still make it though.
