I'm new to the world of wet shaving. I got interested in it for a couple of reasons. I've always had really bad ingrown hairs on my neck. So bad that I usually just avoid shaving. The last time I shaved was... 3 or 4 weeks ago. I'm hoping this new method will clear up that mess. Also, it just seems like a cool thing to do, and I've been told its cheaper in the long run.

So the other day I broke down and bought my first razor. 2 of them actually. A 1966 Gillette Super Speed and a Eversharp Schick Injector. $26 for Both. Then I bought a blade sample pack, some Taylor's avocado shaving cream, and Omega boar brush. It should all arrive later this week.

So naturally, I've got some questions.

1. Would it be a good idea to trim my beard down a little before my first DE shave? I'll probably start with the Injector.

2.Also, I don't want to shave off all of my facial hair. I'm currently sporting a goatee and mustache, and have no intention of getting rid of them. Is it common to keep some facial hair while wet shaving? Just sorta shave around it?

Thanks for all the info. Not sure what I'd do without this resource.

Welcome to B&B, we are glad you found us.
I have found that folks generally have an easier time of it if they trim first. As you gain experience and are able to perfect your technique, this becomes less of an issue.
Many folks here have goatees and/or mustaches, so yes - it's very common to shave around them.
Again, welcome and feel free to ask questions, everyone here loves to answer questions.

Thanks. One thing I've nocticed is how eager everyone is to give advice. Even the guy who sold me the razors offered some pointers. It's all greatly appreciated.

Welcome to B&B!

1. I would trim it down with a clipper, scissors, something that works

2. I would shave around and give it a trim here and there.

Agree with both of the above. You'll find that there are plenty of members here who sport a goatee and/or mustache. You may find you enjoy DE shaving so much, you shave all your facial hair just to increase the surface area you get to shave every day.

Thanks guys. I've already got a couple expensive hobbies, including building pcs and playing the saxophone. Not sure how much more my wallet can take! But I've got a feeling this will be worth it.

A few days growth is generally no worries with a DE as they don't clog up as easily as cartridge razors. But with as much growth as you mention I would advise trimming it down first.

And yep facial hair is quite common, just shave around it.
