Tomatoes had a late start up here this year. I think it will be worth the wait.

I grew and ate my first ones this year. They were a revelation of what a tomato is supposed to taste like.

Heirloom tomatoes of any sort are very good. I haven't grown Brandywines before, but I have grown German Pinks, Old Germans and Polish Linguisas before.

All my tomatoes and most of my garden were heirloom this year. There are several more Brandywine on the vines of this size and some smaller. I also have some Italian Piriform and Japanese Black Trifele that are still coming along. This was a great year and weather for gardening - everything did really well.

Really? The weather for tomatoes has been horrible in this part of the state. Most of mine have been way undersized. Heck, more than a few of my grape tomatoes are about the size of peas.

Well, I have eggplants out my ears, I had more green beans than I have ever had, and my cucumbers did really well (and still are - just picked 2 yesterday), as did my squash. I also had loads of perfect cherry tomatoes, My peppers are late just like the heirloom tomatoes, but they will hopefully round the corner shortly here. So, yes, I would call that a great year for my garden. And I was really hands-off this year and only did the minimum during the season. I think, though, that my soil probably makes the difference. I use the square foot gardening method and my soil is all organic compost from a horse farm mixed with vermiculite. I just refilled my raised bed this year.
