Razors huh? Is it because it's old? Rare ones are rare because they didn't produce that many of that model. But which of the "more regular models" are becoming harder to come by? Red Tips seem to have heavy favorites. Fatboys too. What about a no date code Old Type? What about the Blue Tips? Don't hear about those that often? I know I know....most of it is preference but still...what makes it a "special" razor, makes it special to you...or everybody else?
I am no collector. That being said,
The most prized of my razors are the ones I simply enjoy the most. My slim isn't pretty, but it gives such reliable, close shaves.
My Superspeed is nearly flawless in a good condition case. And it glides over my skin so smoothly.
My futur can mow down a few days worth of stubble no problem, and still never bite me as I finish against the grain.
No, I do not have any #66's, aristocrats, or a Toggle. But to me my razors are priceless.

When using it no matter the cream, soap, brush or blade it gives me either a DFS or a BBS shave and makes me laugh(and cry) @ those under the spell of multi is better.

The one that gives a great shave is what makes a razor special to me. Good looks are a nice plus, but not a top priority.
what makes it a "special" razor, makes it special to you...or everybody else?
Well, it kind of depends.
As far as shaving goes, my special razors are the ones that give me a good, comfortable shave. Ones I would never part with for anything.
As far as collecting goes, it depends on the collector. I started out collecting loose razors and have a few of those that I appreciate. Now, I prefer a complete or boxed set and, generally, also prefer older razors (before 1950). But it's not written in stone. I collect what appeals to me, not what is most popular or gets the highest price. That's not collecting. That's investing (which is fine too if that's how you swing).
What makes a razor special is whatever makes it special to you.
I think what makes it special is when I want to reach it every single time I shave.

OK, you had me until "MY SHARONA!"
There's something about the look and feel of the fat-handle Tech that just... fits.
