I really would like to get myself a couple of new bow ties. Real ones. The kind you actually tie. I have about a dozen vintage ones, but I'd like to treat myself. Thing is, I can't spend $40 on a tie. So, does anyone have any ideas about where and when to find good buys on real bow ties? Thanks.

I hate to sink your battleship, but any bow tie worth its salt is gonna cost you at least 35 bucks. I get mine from a few places, one of which is Beau Ties (www.beautiesltd.com), but there are some there that climb toward 70 bucks.

assuming you have such stores in the US.
Usually these are the things few people buy and you can pick up very cheaply. Some are really smart, other look very tired. Others look exceedingly dated (think of the massive butterflies choking celebs in the 70s).
Otherwise, you will have to either make your own (hard, but satifying) or spend a decent wedge of a fine bow.
It is my firm opinion that everyone should know how to tie a bow. Shamefully, very few chaps do; and those that can tie them and do wear them get labelled eccentric, arrogant or out of touch with modern life. Me, I only ever wear them with evening wear and at no other time.

+1 and then some.
I never knew how to tie a bow tie until :blushing: my wedding, but I was bound and determined to wear a real bow tie with my tux, not a pre-made piece of crap-o-la. I'm sure glad I did.

Maybe it's just the difference in living near a small town, but I've never felt that anyone thought me any of the above, in any negative sense, simply due to my wearing a bow tie.
I rarely wear a tie or dress up. So when I do dress up, it makes a much bigger impression. And, being in advertising, I'm pretty much expected to be eccentric, so my bow ties go over well. And if a bow tie was good enough for Jimmy Olsen and Will Rogers, it's good enough for me.

I agree. It's funny, I've always prided myself on my ability to tie a bow tie, but for my wedding, I actually wore a pre-tied one. I was wearing white tie (no, not a white tux, white tie), and the guy at the store said that the piqué fabric tended to make the knot too big in a self-tied tie. I don't anticipate many chances to prove him right or wrong, unless I get invited to a state dinner.

I absolutely love real Bow Ties and own at least 40 of them. Try the Bow Tie Club-not only do the they have some nice prices on "Internet Specials", but the quality is nice as well. Hanauer and Beau Ties are both good sources as well.

I love bow ties too - wear them on Wednesdays exclusively to break up my usual "wear a tie everyday" drudgery. it's delightful.
you can look for ties on ebay - sometimes you can get real buys there.

Just saw this and thought about this post. I am going to give them a try an order one of the wool ones as soon as I get the spare cash. For $23 including shipping for a hand made bow tie I will surely give them a try.

I just can't bring myself to do the bow tie.
Everytime I think about it, visions of Paul Simon leap to mind.

Why not think of President Harry S. Truman instead and give it a go?

I wear bow ties exclusively. I have many from Brooks Brothers. I have several from southernproper.com. Some of my favorites are from Carrot and Gibbs (greatbows.com). The ties from C&G are probably the finest out of the bunch. I usually spend around $50 a piece for mine.

Here's a site I found that has bowties for $16 to $30. I bought two from them for a total of about $35 with shipping and they're really nice.

only if your peewee herman. lol. :001_tt2:.......unless your talking about a tux.
I own a real bow tie, black, to go with my tux. As a professional musician the tux gets weekly use, and the novelty of a real bow tie wore off fast, but I certainly understand the desire for a real product instead of the fake pre-tied garbage, although I use them out of pure utility. Part of the problem is I bought a cheapie at a local tux rental shop, and for my tastes it is way too limp. It was hard to tie because it was slightly too small for my fat neck, so it's always a trial to get it on. I know how to tie them and am fairly proficient at tying them, but mine is so limp it starts to de-form and has trouble staying perfectly shaped. My impression was that if there was a little more length and stiffener, it would be easier to tie and maintain.
Of course, with my extra chins folding over the tie when I play, good luck to any tie holding its shape!!

I just checked this site out. The ties appear to be very well made and are certainly attractive. I've contacted Ellie and hope to purchase one that really caught my eye.
