I've noticed that after pinning new scales on my razors that after the honing process they need to have the pins tapped a bit to tighten things up. Is this normal?

It means you put to much pressure on the scales with the palm of your hands and pivot while honing. It's not a big deal as you could easily tap it tighter. I also noticed a softer scale material to be more prone to loosen up faster or a lousy peen job to start with.
