"Is my lather any good?" - this question haunted me constantly during the first few weeks of wet shaving. Against better advice I never really stuck to one cream or soap when I began wet shaving 3 months ago or I probably would have had less problems and concerns. I used the same razor and blades for a full 6 weeks (feather portable razor and dorco blades) but couldn't (and didn't) resist all the delicious sounding soaps and creams.
As I begin month 3 of wet shaving I just wanted to share a trick that I started using a couple of weeks ago to help determine if my lather is going to be good before I butcher my face instead of waiting to feel the aftermath caused by bad lather. Once you have followed your favorite method for producing the lather and decide that it looks good in the bowl, paint some on your face with the brush and take your index finger (or any finger you prefer - go crazy and use your thumb if you want ) concentrate real hard, swipe that chosen finger across your lathered face lightly and take note. Did your finger slip right down your cheek and hit your shoulder - good lather - or did your finger stick or skip down your cheek - bad lather. Good lather - shave it up - bad lather -back to the drawing board.
I developed this trick for myself after making a bunch of really bad, dry, dissapearing lather using VDH soap and giving myself really bad razor burn
I know I'm not the first person to ever do this but I haven't seen it mentioned online yet. Even though it seems like common sense it took me well over a month to figure out so I hope someone else gets some use out of this as well.
