I know I know...You all are shocked. But Hey Ive had the razors for a week now...(funds are short no brush yet!). So I Went for it. I had a tube of Derby Shave cream in Lavender..a 1981 Lh Super Adj. And Derby Extras. Plus a bottle of Neutrogena Shave Gel for Sensitive Skin. The best gel I found ever in my Now OLD method of cartridge shaving. So I tried Kyle's prep. Hot towel and a impromptu hand lather (remember no brush) of the derby shave cream rested that for about a minute..again impatient...wiped it off and use my canned goop as you all call it. Now I have to mention Ive been doing a lot of reading and studying so I was Confident. Well I made two passes. Twice lathered. And you know what? I got a pretty Darn decent shave! I'm excited. I missed some spots. Touched them up and I am very Satisfied. Now Nothing Close to BBS, but!!! Very nice! Loved Hearing the sound of the blade. And no nicks and no irritation on my neck. Which has been my major concern in the past..and how I found this forum/hobby in the first place! I am very very excited. I can't wait to get a brush and some soap! Well I have Tabac already but didn't want to try it without the brush...grr..stupid layoff. Anyway in light of my past week this has been the first thing to go right. I want to thank everyone for all their help...and posts. I am now officially A DE/Wetshaver! lol even if it was improvised.
P.S I started with setting one...quickly advanced to 5 in about 2 strokes. And think I need a sharper blade! Might move right to feathers...due to the fact that my hair is so thick! the top of the line Norellco wouldnt even cut my hair..no joke!

Congrats on your first shave!!

I don't know how much your budget constraints are, but the VDH Kit from Wal-Mart (bowl, soap, brush) will certainly suffice to get you stated, and would allow you to get started into that Tabac goodness!! It's only $10 as well.

Yes, more expensive brushes are more luxurious, I am just not 100% convinced that a high end brush improves the overall shave quality that much. It certainly improves the shave from an enjoyment standpoint, but from an actual mechanics of shaving standpoint, maybe not as much. :tongue_sm

I agree with this. There are the VDH supplies as well as less expensive badger brushes if you want something softer. The Tweezerman is a great badger brush for only 12 bucks on Amazon. That would give you a real badger brush to try, while you save those nickels and dimes for a cadillac
