I used to enjoy the occasional cigar, and still like the aroma of cigar smoke (and pipe smoke, come to that).

What are the favourite brands amongst you fine Gents, and what would you recommend for a special occasion.

And please nothing in the realms of Expensive Fantasy, you know "...hand picked by the light of the moon, and rolled on the thighs of an 18 year old virgin, before being packed in dodo feathers, and all this for $750,000 each"

Taste, price point and if you want a box or a single make this question awfully hard too answer , a trip to a local tobacconist is always a good bet.

I enjoy the ocassional indulgence. I have tried both cigars. both were Medium bodied, very smooth on the palate with very complex and rich flavors.

seems like you are on the other side of the pond (I assume based on you spelling of "favourite"). You have access to Cubans which we in the US have been deprived off for so long

Castro may almost be kicking the bucket soon so things may change.

Do try one of those cubans..

Hard to go wrong on any Padron, especially the anniversarios.

If you need something with more name recognition (and assuming you are talking about a non-Cuban) several of the top Arturo Fuentes will suffice. Try an Opus X if you can find one.

You can also get terrific cigars from Montecristo, Punch, Partagas, Hoyo de Monterrey, Rey del Mundo, Dunhill, Macanudo, H. Upmann, La Gloria Cuban, well, you get the point.:tongue_sm

Davidoff Platinum Series
Montecristo No. 1

Low price cigar that stands up to higher priced ones: Astral. Give em a try.

I also agree with the Padron selections posted, however they are a more full bodies smoke. If you like milder go with the Davidoffs or the Montes.

Happy smoking.

The Gispert Maduro is also nice.

Crap I forgot the 8-5-8 super excellent stick in the midrange, of course I was just giving him one from each range. Another good brand among those not listed yet is Gurkha. They make everything from extremely mild to full bodied. Have yet to have a bad one.
I'm going to get lynched for saying this but IMO Opus X is overrated, dont get me wrong they are fine but I dont think they are worth the going rate.

BTW I switched to mostly pipes about a year ago. Much more economical and on the premium end as good or better than any stick I've ever cut.

I am a big fan of CAO's. The brazilia is my favorite cigar, all around - but their Criollo, Italia, etc are all top notch, and reasonably priced.

I am also quite fond of Padron 1964's and every once in awhile for a very light, mild smoke a Dunhill. The dunhill's are really superb with a delicate dram of top notch Irish Whiskey and are so light - they are nearly white in color.

The Avo Signatures are great. Much richer flavor and fuller body than the other Avo lines. Still on the mild to medium side by my standards, as I smoke a lot of stronger stuff. As for the price, just depends what you are comfortable with, but I do highly recommend it.

I can't disagree with your assessment of the PSD4. It's a damn fine smoke. As far as Cubans go, I also love Partagas Shorts and varnished 898s, R&J Cazadores, Bolivar Royal Coronas (and Belicoso Finos and Petite Coronas), Cohibas Siglo II, Cuaba Divinos, and Por Laranaga Petite Coronas. For legals, I like anything Padron, Indian Super Fuerte Maduro (any vitola), Rocky Patel's The Edge (maduro), Camacho Corojo, 5 Vegas Series A, Gran Habano Corojo, and the list goes on. Oh, and Mike sent me an Avo Sig some time ago. It's a very fine smoke. More sturdy than I expected, which was a big plus. Good flavor and finish.

Aha! Someone mentions the Gran Habano Corojo. It seems I keep gravitating to that as my favorite. I've only recently gotten into cigar smoking so I've been trying a few a stick at a time. So far I seem to like the Gran Habano Corojo, the Punch Gran Puro, and the La Flor (spelling?) Dominicana Double Ligeros (Chisel). Looks like I like the strong ones; that might have something to do with using Copenhagen for many, many moons.

A fine selection! And it reminds me other superb smokes: the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 and Petite Robusto. Both are super nice. I dated a real firecracker of a gal many years ago whose father was big into Havanas. He'd open this massive humidor each time I'd visit (quite a ritual) and give me something great. He once handed me a Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona. That was a fairly generous cigar. As a side note, the man she ended up marrying has no humidor privileges. Ha ha!

I also like Trinidad Reyes.

Griffins are definately good cigars, often overlooked. When I was in the business they were one of the slowest selling brands on the shelf. They get passed over often as most smokers these days are leaning toward the heavy bodied cigars. I like a good range of both, just depends on what I'm in the mood for. Griffin, Davidoff, Avo, Dunhill, and Diamond Crown all put out great mild smokes.

I worked at a smoke shop during the cigar boom, circa 1996. Those were among the most overprices sticks in the humidor -- right alongside the private-label ciagrs you now see for a buck or two a piece in the Cigars International catalog. Amazing. Just amazing. People just shit themselves to buy a Petrus or whatever. And before the fancy cigar magazines started to market Fuente cigars for the familia, many tobacconists couldn't give 'em away. Ah, the fond memories. :001_wub:

The best cigar I've smoked was a "Cohiba Esplendido" ...not the Cohiba made in Tampa, Florida. I am referring to the Cohiba made in Habana, Cuba. I had the pleasure of indulging on these on a trip I made to Merida, in the Yucatan peninsula. Of course, I could not bring any with me...just brought the memory.
If you are looking for a cigar that smokes like a $20 cigar, try "Flor de Oliva". This is a Nicaraguan Maduro hand made cigar. I get them here in town for $3.

Yep. Same with Cuban Rum (which, for the record, is also worth the trouble - 10 year Havanna Club is by far the best rum I've ever had). You'd have to check the customs rules for the amount. Probably just googling would produce the information. Of course, you have to actually go somewhere that you can legally buy them (ie, outside the US), and personally carry them back.

I stopped by the local smoke shop today. First time I've ever been in this one, and it smelled awesome, a big selection of pipes and a large walk-in humidor for the cigars. Could be trouble... They were out of Padrons so I went with his recommendations which, of course, was nothing on this list. I ended up with a Savinelli Nicaragua Reserve and a Por Larranaga. Been a while since I smoked one so I am looking forward to it. Any thoughts on these two?

I haven't had the Savinelli but the Por Larranaga (robusto size) I had a while back wasn't bad at all. Nice flavorful mild/medium bodied smoke. It should be enjoyable and since you haven't smoked a cigar in a long time it won't be overwhelming to the palate at all.

If I recall correctly, the $100 rule was applicable to those traveling on authorized visit and returning directly back to the U.S. from Cuba. Authorized visits being humanitarian work, etc. Traveling outside the U.S. and returning with Cuban products is not allowed under any circumstances as far as I know.

However, you can buy Cubans at Cuban state-run stores in Canada, and most of the time, customs coming back into the U.S. can be lax. But, you didn't hear that from me.

For an occasional cigar smoker Davidoff's are very mild and satisfying. I don't like that strong I just smoked a cigar taste in your mouth especially hours after the fact. Ah man, you guys are killing me. So many things and no money but, the biggest thing of all it sucks living in one of the most PC (politically correct) fanatic places in the country. You pull out a cigar or pipe and someone is right there with either a bucket of water or knows where every no smoking sign within a 1/2 mile radius is located and is glad to point them out to you.

I swear if I ever get a new house, it's going to have a detached room where I can smoke, drink, read, watch movies (horror and sci-fi/fantasy not T & A), pig out on my non-healthy cooking to my hearts content and finally, take as long as I want in the bath and shave. And then, I wake up.

How does he do that and get by customs? I'm waiting for Castro to croak. I think the drug dealers have it down pat. Create a need, supply the need and then charge as much as you want. Just look at all the smoking, drinking, culinary and shaving addicts we have right here? You can't shove democracy down someone's throat but you can sure get them to vote on the things they want to buy next.

Best cigar I've ever had was a Cuban Montecristo No. 2+1!

My usual good cigars are RyJ Churchills, and Dunhill Peravias. Most days, it's a J&R knockoff of the latter.
When I go to the racetrack, it's the RyJ Exhibition #1. An hour and a half of joy.

ETA: Maduro's are just too strong for my tastes.

For the absolute best bang for the buck, not to mention selection, go to herfersparadise.com and go to the Box Passes/Trades forum and go for one of the newbie samplers. This is the best way to try a bunch of different cigars before you take the plunge on a box/bundle. Many a newbie has benefited from the samplers.

This opinion may not be welcome in this particular thread, but I have long felt that a good bowl of pipe tobacco beats the hell out tof he very best cigar.

Hmmm, as far as I know Havana has never produced a maduro wrapper. Can you provide us with any more info on this cigar?

Dj..Cannot provide much detail only that this was brought back by my brother from South America. I don't have enough Cohiba knowledge to add to this. You now have me wondering. Could this be a knock off? I think I will Google and see what I can come up with. Thanks for your post. Appreciate it.

I checked all of my sources, and as far as I can tell there is no such cigar.
Hey as long as you did not spend big bucks on it, and it tastes good, enjoy it.

Nice eagle eye job, Din!

Cohiba is the most forged cigar, after all.

Pacific makes some nice cigars and I really like Turano.
Both are mild and the Turan has a creamy finish.

If you want to try something nice and inexpensive..
try Punch. I enjoy the tubos - nice mild cigar and good for the golf course. Also Ashton makes a great cigar, Both really worth trying.

I Like the R&J Reserves. Chruchhill too. I like to look like General Jack D. Ripper when I smoke that bad boy.

I know this cigar is certainly more of a novelty item than anything listed so far in this thread, but the Fat Rum Tavern Cigar from the Frankenmuth Cigar Co. is probably the most enjoyable stick I've had in the past 5 years. A little on the small side for the price ($2.83 a piece), but the flavor is well worth it.

for any body that lives in the north east part of jersey close to manhatten, theres a place in jersey city on central ave called rodriguez puros cigars. he handrolls his own, and i can vouch for the 6$ torpedo shaped cigars. a very very good/enjoyable smoke.

Right now my humidor is filled with small, natural Ashtons for a quick smoke. Larger, darker Padrons for nice meaty smoke with a good bottle of wine or port, scotch would be better.

Romeos (Cuban and Dominican), La Gloria Cubana...

Sorry, I can't decide - just find one that you like and go with it.
