I got mine back from Eric today!
And guess what? -- I shaved with it right away. :tongue_sm
All I can say is wow!
What an incredible difference this made. So much more accurate and feels more balanced. Needless to say the improvement in the overall appearance alone is incredible!
Looks like a work of art!:w00t:
I have a second one here that is now going to be boxed up and sent in for the upgrade!
Thank you Eric for such great -- no -- FANTASTIC work! You are a real master and I appreciate your communication throughout the process as well!!:thumbup1:

I just shaved with mine for the first time as well. It's a really nice shave! I've got the XL version and this sucker is heavy.
I'd really like to paint the numbers on it just to dress it up a little more. I know the first post says that you'll use enamel, but exactly what would I need to do it? I'd assume a tiny paint brush, said enamel paint (brand? type?), and a steady hand. I'd like to do it myself, I just need a little guidance and possibly some tips on how to not mess up!
Hi There,
Thanks for the compliments.
I use Testors enamel: http://www.testors.com/category/135894/Enamel_Paints
They have a new acrylic out now too so be sure you're getting the enamel. It'll say it right on the bottle.
For the numbers I would use a sharp toothpick or pin and let it flow in the grooves. When it has dried for about 5 minutes or so you can use a cloth with a little mineral spirits and clean up anything that crept out.
It might take a couple tries to get it looking good. I've tried to paint the numbers before and it all depends on how deeply they were stamped. Sometimes they're kind of shallow so it's hard to get a nice clean line.
Post some pictures if you can when you're done.
Eric

I got a Mergress and the 1st time I cleaned it, most of the color from the numbers came off.
The Mergress I got was used 4 or 5 times before I got it, so wanted to give it a good cleaning, well, in the process, the paint came off. Is there something that will "stick" better and stay painted longer?
When you "paint", do you use a primer or just paint or what process do you use?
Thanks for any info:)

Hi Wayne,
I've always just cleaned them with mineral spirits and then painted. Not sure how different waters/cleaners effect the paint. If you wanted to send it to me I'd be happy to repaint it for just the cost of return shipping.
Let me know,
Eric

WOW!!
That is really nice and I appreciate it:)
I think I am going to give it a go myself first though. I "don't think" it should be "too hard", but, a lot of times those are the hardest projects, LOL!!
If I can not "get it", I will definitely reconsider and contact you. Your offer is very much appreciated and to me, shows that you really take pride in your work and care about your customers-
THANK YOU!!!:thumbup1:

Hi Mer,
I purchased the standard Mergress razor last july '10, wanted to give potential customers, and yourself some positive feedback.
I have thick, wirey, multi directional growth beard, with ultra sensitive skin. This razor allows for great range of adjustments according to growth, and how close of a shave you want to achieve. I have tried the entire full range of settings in the past 6 months. I settled on a 3.5 first pass wtg, then a 1.5 atg, and Im usually bbs, with minimal touchups. (I stay away from 5!!)
The craftsmanship on the Mergress is second to none, its beautifully done, and I have had zero problems since day one. Mine adjusts smoothly, and appears very consistent, trust me, my face would let you know if it wasnt.
This razor has satisfied my RAD, ive only purchased a travelers Merkur razor since, and have sold my entire collection, and am perfectly happy with only one in my rotation, I have all I need, and I really enjoy using this razor. If you are on the fence on buying or upgrading one, do your self a favor and just do it! You will be super happy with it, as I am, thanks for the great shaves Mer!

Ebay and on any of the shave forum BST forums.
I got mine, as new plus about 100 blades for $45 total shipped/
I also "found" a new Futur (satin/matte) with the Merkur Badger brush, razor and brush stand AND the soap bowl, all new- $20 plus $10 shipping.
No, those do not come along very often, however, my luck is so terrible that when something good happens I am proud of it:)

I don't think you can buy a complete Mergress from Eric(Mer) himself. Only send him your Progress for the upgrade.
As far as I know, other than the occasional one showing up on the BST, the only place to get one complete is Lee's and its a gamble because they usually sell out quick (less than an hour last time they were in stock).

My Mergress arrived yesterday from Mer. Extremely fast turn-around and the workmanship is as good as everyone claims. The weight and balance are exceptional. Oh, and it shaves so nicely. There is a reason they sell out within minutes at Lee's and you seldom see them for sale or trade. Nobody wants to part with such a special razor.

That sounds very tempting. I saw that there is an XL version with a longer adjustment knob. Has anyone out there tried a Mergress based on the long handle Progress? How does that compare to the XL?
I'm asking because I currently use a Merkur barber pole razor. I'm used to the heft and the long handle and I would be interested in either an XL or a mod of the long handle Progress.
Thanks Guys,
Glad you're happy with my work.
The Mergress using the long handled Progress and standard knob would be very similar to your barber pole model. It is not as heavy as the long knob on the standard model but close.
I have actually had orders for the long handled Progress with the long knob. That was one long razor. :biggrin1:

Looking to purchase a new Merkur Mergress XL as my first safety razor. I have been looking at many options and its time I moved away from multy-blade 'multi-cost' supermarket options and the like.
Are you able to supply to individuals that have a PayPal account and if so what would the cost be to the UK (England).
Many thanks,

I bought a long handled Progress recently and the Mergress knob won't work with it.
The long handled Progress is deeper than my Mer knob goes and won't catch the head. Now I'm bummed out.
How do I get a knob that fits a long handled Progress?
PM me please.
I was so excited to have an uber long adjustable and it didn't pan out. :bored:

From what I understand, both knobs are different, they do not fit both razors, it is either/or, one or the other.
If you have the XL, you will need the XL knob to go with it
Hi,
No, the knob assemblies are not interchangeable. You can send me your Long Handled Progress for modification if you want. PM me and we'll get it set up.

Well I did it. Yesterday I packaged up my favorite razor and shipped it off to Mer. Parting is such sweet sorrow. And yet I am pretty sure it will come back better than before. Back to my old Parker 99R during the wait.
I opted for the long version, I like the idea of more length in the handle. :thumbup1:

Why has the price jumped from$89 to $115 on the Mergress at Lee razors? Yesterday it was $89 and not available! That's price gouging!

I guess he gauged the price and saw he could go up.
As long as people will pay, businesses will Charge-
Just as much as they can get by with or as much as people will pay.
When people stick together and say" We will NOT" pay that price for it, the price comes down.
The "problem" being, there are always- ALWAYS those that "break rank" and say to themselves, "I want one, here is one, yeah, it is a little higher, but I can get one and it won't hurt anyone, it's just one.
Now, take that on a larger scale- America, just one "taking" from the pot won't hurt, then another, then another, then it is millions or more saying, it's just me, it won't make any difference, well, it has!!
You know why people do not stick together like they used to just a generation or two ago-
Loyalty, loyalty to themselves and each other, loyalty to country and family.
Now it is a "free for all", get all you can get, all for one and one for one (not all any longer), America, for the most part has turned into "take it before someone else does".
No, not all, there are some good, very good people. Unfortunately most are on B&B and not in politics or washington that "could" make a difference, but there is a story behind that also, there is no difference that will help, things are too far gone, it is on a down hill slide and the hill is getting steeper and steeper. .
Whatever happened to the hero's we once had?
Presidents- all gone bad
Ball players- on the take
Actors- on drugs or busted for solicitation prostitution, etc
What have our children to look forward to?
Who do they look to as role models?
I could go on and on..., oh yeah-
Back to the original scheduled question-
Why the gouging? LOL!!

Cannot believe how how fast he is. I mailed mine in about 10 days ago, and just sent him an email asking if he had received it and he replied it was just about finished.
Hi Guys,
The new price will be $104.95.
Lee and I have been talking about this lately and need to raise the price. There was a mis-communication on both our parts that resulted in the $115 price. We've been going at this for over three years now and have held the price pretty good while everything else is going up. Merkur is now going to make Lee purchase 570's (the ones with the plastic case and blades) in addition to the 500's because we're using so many. These are approx. $10 more than the 500's so we're trying to balance everything out and make it as fair as we can for everyone. We all know shipping has gotten pretty crazy in the last year or two as well.
Sorry if this upsets anyone and hopefully it won't be considered gouging.
I guess if we had raised the price $4.95 or so each year it would have been a little easier than one larger jump but I wanted to keep the original price as long as we could.
Hopefully you'll understand my/our position.
Thanks always for your support,
Eric

If you are buying in quantity, (like razors or anything , actually), should you not be getting a discount, not a higher price than everyone else? (just a thought).
Just curious, what price are just the Progress razors?
Then, of course there is the material, machining and time.

just out of curiosity, what is the price going to be now if i send in a Merkur Progress to get the upgrade done?
i believe it was $30+shipping ($25 to canada??ouch).
i'm in canada and would be curios to know what it would cost to send my own razor in and get the job done?
thanks
Still $30.00 plus shipping.
I lost 5 razors in 2009 shipping internationally (ouch) until I started using First Class Registered for my international shipments. The first class parcel is approx $12.?? and Registered is approx. $12.??.
If you wanted to take the risk with your razor for a different method that would be up to you. I'm flexible.
Thanks,
Eric

I'm sorry, but a $55 Merkur Progress with a new handle is not worth $115. Are those of us on the waiting list for the original $89 Mergress going to be given that price or ripped for the $115?
No, it isn't. That is why the price is $104.95.
Merkur has raised their prices on the Progress about 40% in the last 3 years. Progresses used to be had for about $39.00 street price if you remember. I used to get mine from QED back when this all started for abut $37.00 each. Now they're $55.95 average. With the quantities we need Merkur is making Lee buy a certain number of the 570's that comes with the plastic case and blades that we do not need. That's another $7 or so per razor added to his cost.
After 3 years of absorbing the price increases all around (product and freight) and holding at $89.95 we raised the price about 16% to $104.95.
As far as the waiting list you'll have to contact Lee. That's his business that he runs. I'm just a supplier.
I try to stay out of that area as much as I can and keep it as a hobby for myself.
Sorry for the trouble this has caused.

You know, after looking through all of this and realizing it is only a $15 increase and as much as everything else has gone up, $105 is really lower than the prices of everything else and actually went up less than everything else, consider gas, a few years ago, it was (about) $1.19, now it is at or over $3 and it effects EVERYTHING.
It is a shame we have more oil in the USA than all the oil supplying countries combined, but we will not drill our own (we do not want to hurt field mice), but sell poison and traps at Lowes and Wal-Mart to kill them.
Things are quite a bit "backwards" here and people are "finally" beginning to notice.
When a small supplier has to raise the price, even a small amount, people (me included) have a fit, but the big business and government controls the prices of EVERYTHING, we are lucky we are still making any profit at all as a small business.
When I first heard of the price increase, I was (like most), Upset!!
But after taking everything into consideration, I can truly understand the "need" to, just to stay afloat.
I can understand a bit more because I used to hang with a guy that bought his own "machine", I don't know what it is called, but it did lathe, milling, etc, the cost of the machine, the cost of the tooling, before too long it needed a new motor and it was easier to buy one (for several hundred dollars) than try to make a warranty claim and be down for weeks or months while the "claim" was "in process", then the material!!! I could not believe the cost of a stupid piece of metal rod, then there is set up waste, seconds or as most would call- scrap because you do not want your name on substandard products, so yeah, I understand a $15 increase.
How many things can you name that have NOT went up in price in the last 3 - 5 years?
Gas prices are up, shipping prices are up, raw material is up, tooling is up, maintenance is up- EVERYTHING else is higher and higher.
"Maybe" it would have been easier to swallow if he had raised the price $5/year, but trying to give the best deal possible, keep prices down as much as possible and finally, it takes a "bite" out of you and you have no choice but to raise the price somewhat just to break even and make a little profit for your time, effort, design and work.
Inflation is killing us all (especially those with no job, no disability and selling items you collected over the years to buy other items you "want"), so, I could (and have) really blasted this at first, until realizing all the work, time, material (raw material and the razor have both went up in price, machining, tooling, maintaining, electricity to run the machine, heat or cool the shop, higher and higher shipping cost, packaging material and many other things that come up we do not even see or think about, like government red tape, taxes, business license, running to and from the post office, car wear & tear, gasoline, oil changes, and multitudes of other "expenses" we do not see or even hear of in the production of a small piece (razor knob) etc, etc. Everyone wants a "perfect one", but for a fine finish, there is a lot of work, not like just cutting something out. Most work is in the detail if it is like any of the work I have ever done.
So, bottom line, for 3 years, at least, we have been sold a product that is top quality, works BETTER than new and never a price increase even though demand was through the roof at times (this is when "most" companies will raise the price and "gouge" the public, however, that did not happen here. It took a good 3 years for an increase in price.
Several ways to look at it, because it hit all at one time when the producer noticed- " Hey, I am loosing out here".
In 3 years, let's say 365 days the price goes up $15.
I am trying to look at this several ways-
For 3 YEARS, there was never a price increase.
Some companies may go the same route, not raising the price, but the quantity or quality goes down, but not here.
Not only was the quality Extremely high..., dare I say beautiful work and function and no price increase in 3 years while everything around us is going up (daily) in some cases
In 3 years it went from (rounding numbers here) $90 to $105, that is 5.67% per year price increase (I wish everything was "only" 5.67% price increase.
Looking at it another way, it is .0136986 cents per day or .410958 cents increase per month, I don't know about you, but for a quality piece, I can handle that.
Not only does he make them, they are beautiful pieces- works of art, functions much better than new, but also stands behind his work (something a lot no longer do).
Yeah, they all have their warranties, but read the fine print, they do all they can for the warranty to be useless and it is like having to have the stars aligned perfectly in order to actually use the big company warranty. This man takes PRIDE in his work and it is covered without fine print. If it does not work correctly, send it back it and he takes care of it- what "the American way" used to be and he is honoring his work on down the road and no charge.
So, an average of 5.67% price increase for 3 years (5.67% x 3, think of it this way, we all got away without ANY price increase while EVERYONE else was paying more for everything.
Example, I remember going to a fast food restaurant (not mentioning names) and a "value meal" for 2 was well under $10. Last weekend it was close to $20 when ordering the same "value meals". I remember taking my mother out for her birthday and getting a Lobster tail for $4.95. Yeah, it was the "lunch lobster", about 4 - 5 oz. but now that is the dinner tail and it is well over $20.
Think about it, when he started he was paying $37 for just the razor, now they are paying $55
Their price, JUST ON THE RAZOR went up right at 49% (or about $18.13) in 3 years. They are holding our increase down to 15%, a 34% SAVINGS on the razor alone.
Numbers do not and can not lie. Keeping the price as low as they have is nothing short of miraculous, IMO.
I can no longer question them, trash talk or wonder out loud why we are getting "gouged".
We are in NO WAY getting gouged, we are getting the deal of a lifetime when you take all things into consideration.
I do not know how they can sell that low, have the work as nice as it is (perfect) and ONLY charge (now) $105 when EVERYTHING else has went sky high in price-
GREAT JOB GUY's!!!
I guess I came to the conclusion after looking at several things-
1- He kept the price from going up for 3 years, that is a long time in this economy and needs to be applauded for it!!!
2- The increase was minimal (aprox. .0136986 cents per day over the course of 3 years)
3- The total increase was about 17% when the razor alone went up 49%, but break it down to 3 years and it is 5.67% per year, which is a LOT LESS than most increases I have been hit with and not only increases, but quality cuts as well in most other areas.
4- With his prices not increasing for 3 years, he not only did not raise our price, but most importantly, he did not "skimp" on quality- he did not start making hollow knobs hoping no one would notice, he did not allow "seconds" or scrap to be sold. There is still a beautiful finish on the product, no machining marks and not once said "This is good enough", especially knowing every time you make one, you are really making less and less money.
My conclusion is I have to support the increase. Like everyone else, I hate paying higher prices, but for 3 years we "got by" without an increase and now, here it is, it had to happen sooner or later.
Thanks guy's for a great product, reasonable priced and better than a new one- much better!!

I don't want to jump in the debate here but I was surprised that the price for the mergress didn't go up already.
Back in October I noticed that Merkur razors all went up about an average of $10 in price, I also remember reading some sales threads in the Vendor forum where they said that Merkur was setting the prices.
I commented about it in a a thread here (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=175102).
factor in time to make these razors, and I'm sure like everything else Eric's prices for materials probably has gone up, I think a 16% increase in price is more than fair.

I think a 16% increase in price is more than fair.
And still worth it. Look at how much a Vision costs. Totally my opinion, but the Mergress is just a better razor than a Vision. It does the same thing, has better functionality, better aesthetics, and costs less.

I just received my XL this morning and just had my first shave with it. I typically shave with a 23c or a vintage slim and do 3 passes aiming for a BBS every time.
It was hard to tell that there was a blade in the Mergress on the 2nd pass and I just did the 3rd pass because I wasn't quite ready to put the razor down yet. It is the best shave I've ever had hands down and this was only on my first try.
Great job Eric and thank you so much for doing what you do. The price is very reasonable considering the quality of the product. I would honestly buy one at twice the price and still consider it a fair deal after the shave that I just got from it.
Thank You Sir!
Glad you're happy with the razor.
Hopefully it brings you many more great shaves.
Take Care,
Eric

Well I got my baby back and had my first shave with it today. Awesomesauce. The long knob has turned a good razor into a great razor! It rests against my palm perfectly for much improved stability in my grip! The red dot is the Pièce de résistance,
Thanks Eric!

Mer,
just curious as to what is your everyday razor since you don't use a Mergress? What have you found thats better????
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^^^^^Blasphemy!
I hope to contact you shortly to arrange an upgrade when I get my Progress in the mail :001_smile:
Better/best for me is my HD. It is the first DE razor I purchased after joining this site. Got it from Cotton blossom Crafts. I've tried Techs to a Vision to the Feather Stainless and lots in between but I always seem to come back to my original HD. Never bonded with adjustables myself although I will throw my Futur in for a week once in a while. My latest venture is straights. I ordered a kit from whippeddog.com that should be here this week. I've been doing a lot of reading and preparing myself for that one. :biggrin1:
Thanks,
Eric

What is an HD?
It's the Merkur 34C, also known as the "HD"

Thank you:)
I have tried one, but the Mergress is nicer, IMO.
The HD is a "nice" razor, the Mergress is a "work of art" and a "precision instrument" after you are finished with it, I'm just glad you have them available for us, LOL!!
Anyone that has not tried out a Mergress, you "have to", it's all part of our obsession and I would think 90% of the people that have used one think they are keepers, you do not see many for sale on the used market.
Take care and keep up the great work!!

Hi guys.
I live in Sweden and just ordered myself a progress.
I used the gilette fusion blades but I always had plans to change to a DE razor. Before I ordered it I did some research and decided that the progress was the one for me. It usually takes me a long time when I shave since I really enjoy it. I read that a DE razor is a new experience so that's what triggered me but the one thing that bothered me about the progress was the plastic at the bottom. That thing almost made me buy the merkur future.
Well to shorten the story I was happy to see that someone has made it possible to change the plastic, BUT there is a catch. I live in Sweden :S but I still really want this mod and I do not believe that anybody else in Sweden has it. So if someone could help me figure out what the price is for the 2 first ones that are on page 1 ( short metal knob and the longer one, with the same shape as the razor ) and who I have to contact to see if they are willing to ship the knob to me.
I hope that I didn't overdo my first post but I am really exited and want to learn as much as possible. I didn't know that there is such a big interest in this and that people are so passionate about it. I hope to be a part of it because when I do something I do it with passion, so you will hear more from me :)
And by the way I hope that you understand my posts since as I said am not from the US.

Hi Edvinoo - they don't ship the end piece to you, because demand outstrips supply the Mergress is now sold through Lee's Razors so that the logistics are a bit more manageable for Eric (aka Mer).
http://www.leesrazors.com/categories/Razors/Safety-Razors/Mergress-Safety-Razors/
This means you buy the whole razor not just the knob. Another option may be for Mer to modify your Progress razor if you send him a pm and arrange it from there.
Having said that - all of the info I've just given is repeated earlier in this thread so read it and you'll know the score.
Its a shame you didn't find this info sooner as the Mergress was back in stock at Lee's earlier today and I was lucky enough to get one:thumbup1: - they sell out VERY fast.

i still am amazed that the adjustment from the factory isn't the same every time you switch the blade. am i correct in that assumption? that when you shave on #4, change the blade, and come back to #4, it might not be the same adjustment level?

I'm on the waiting list too and never got an email either, not this time round or in mid-January when they had some stock. Just got lucky enough to check the website and find them available . . I had only just bought a Progress and was going to try and arrange for Eric to upgrade it for me as the stock at Lee's sells out faster than the notification email gets round people (if they still send one?)
So glad my google-fu worked for me, what a great start to the week

My simple solution was to buy a Progress from a vendor (superiorshave.com.) Jarrod at superiorshave shipped my Progress directly to Eric who made the modifications I e-mailed him, and Eric shipped it back to me.
I didn't have to wait for the razors to be back in stock and I got a custom made razor rather quickly. :wink2:

Over the past several years I have been using various razors with different results. I've used a Merkur slant blade, slim black handle Gillette and a fat boy. They all have their ups and downs but all good shavers. When I ordered the MergressXL it just "look" like a piece of art so I was looking forward to the purchase. I received it several weeks ago and could not be happier. I can't compare the before and after upgrade results but can tell you my experience with the MergressXL has been superior to the others I've list. I realize its only my opinion but the MergressXL on the first pass is hands down the best. I have a light beard so sometimes one pass is sufficient. The price is subjective, either you think it's worth it or you don't. I like the heft to the razor. It is heavy. I wish the handle had a little texture for better gripping but in the Xl's case it's long handle provides great control. I ordered mine through Lee's razors and it was a great transaction. This is a fantastic razor and you won't be disappointed.

See the post just above yours. Just send him an e-mail (click on his user name). He will send you a text order form, you print it out, put it in the box with your Progress, ship it to the address on the form, and he takes care of the rest (oh, and send him the payment, check or paypal).

Wow, got mine today, and let me tell you, the pictures, although really good pictures, BTW, don't do it justice. It is amazing! It is smaller than I anticipated, but still larger than the Merkur HD I currently use, and it is considerably heavier, or at least, feels that way. Got a feather locked and loaded for the trail run tonight.
Thanks Eric. In total, from the time I placed my order from The Superior Shave, to when I got it back from Eric, 2 weeks, to the day. Not bad at all.

All I can say is, Freaking WOW! Best shave so far. I used a feather, and set it up on #3 for the initial WTG pass. Relathered, and set it up for #1, for XTG and ATG, and did not get a single cut, and got really close. Closer than I've ever got with my HD.
Is it recommended to remove the handle to clean all parts at some time? If so, how is this done? It almost feels like it's captured (the knob, rather), into the handle.

1. First pass WTG, at setting 3
2. Second pass XTG, setting 2
3. Third pass ATG, setting 2
BBS shave, with very minimal irritation under the chin area. All done in less than 9 minutes.
So, far I like it better than my Vision, and dare I say my favorite (and first DE razor) Merkur, the Futur!

I bought a Mergress a year ago and maybe four months ago I added an XL. Both are remarkable instruments. While each is consistent with itself insofar as adjustment is concerned, the setting on one differs slightly from the same setting on the other. Can't figure why.
No matter. They are keepers, pure and simple. Both are in rotation with a cooncatbob-replated NEW and several others.

Mer can you put the long knob on the long handle version? That would be cool with royal blue numbers yeah yeah yeah want one bad!
Yes I can.
Something to note, the new Progresses have different number rings. They have lines instead of dots between the numbers. I've tried to color/fill the lines and like the numbers, they're just too shallow to look good. The long handled models are still using the older number rings with the dots for now. No clue when the change will take place with them.
Thanks,
Eric

To say that this is nothing short of a piece of art is an understatement.

Why did you change the knob into a larger version? Was it for people with bigger hands or for better balance?
Hi Smoothshave,
Wasn't a change, it was an addition. I offer both the standard and long knobs. I'm pretty sure that a longer version was a request way back when and once pictures were posted, more people wanted it. Pretty soon it became a standard. Bigger hands or a different balance, I've heard it both ways.
Thanks,
Eric

@Mer
I just ordered an XL
I heard that the XL has more weight towards the knob which results in less pressure at the head. The standard has more weight towards the head which results in more pressure at the head. What is your opinion about this?
Ideally, yes. Everybody probably holds their razors a little differently so maybe yes and maybe no. My "theory" is that the extra weight gives the razor more inertia so the blade is less likely to stutter or drag on the whiskers giving a smooth shave. I prefer a heavier razor for that reason. It is all personal preference though. Some just like the looks of the smaller or larger versions.
Clear as mud? :biggrin1:

I had my first shave with the Mergress XL with new Feather blades.
It was a strange experience. I adjusted it to 5 and while I was shaving I was loudly hearing the scratchy noise when the whiskers/hairs were cut, there was no pulling, the weight of the machine (you can certainly call it a machine) did all the work. It was the same feeling as when a barber was shaving me with a straight razor.....
I had a long beard, almost 8mm.
I only did 2 passes: WTG and CTG.....
My skin is smoother than a BBS shave.....
I did cut, but it was my first shave......and I am speechless.....
By the way....I have weighted the Mergress and it is 125gr.

Hi,
This is normal. They'll be at the "1" or usually a bit to the left. The numbers are just a reference for each razor. The Progresses don't "click" into place like the Gillettes did so getting them all to bottom out at "1" would be tough. Most people aren't going to shave with them dialed all the way down and will find their "number" after a few uses. If it bugs you, you can send them to me for some fine tuning and I'll see what I can do. Shoot me an email to set it up.
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Dipesh,
If the knob assembly comes out when changing the blade it sounds like the split ring needs to be spread out a little. You'll notice on the knob that there is a split ring that fits in a groove. That probably needs to be spread a little so when inserted in the handle it will keep the knob assembly secure. A small screwdriver will take care of it. If you have trouble you can always send it to me for adjustment.
Thanks,

Hi, Eric
I've got a Progress that I'd like to get your conversion to Mergress done to. I've noticed that the blade gap seems to be perceptibly uneven from one side of the razor to the other. Admittedly, I'm unsure of this as I don't have the measuring equipment or means to be sure of my perception. Is this unevenness something you've encountered before? If it turns out to be uneven, is this something you could adjust while you have the razor? If so, I'll send the razor for your work after getting shipping instructions and address from you.
Ford
Hi Ford,
I have encountered this before and I have been able to fix it before. If it's too far off I'll tell you before I do the conversion so you can get it remedied before it's modified.
Shoot me an email and I'll get you the ordering info.
Thanks!

I've been using a Mergress I got off the BST for a few days now, and it's a beauty! And it was way heavier than I thought, makes it really easy to control pressure, you can pretty much let the weight do the work on your north to south passes.
I've been using it around 3-3.5, but boy you can crank it high for insane blade exposure if you want to.
Long Handle Mergresses are now available. This is the long handled Progress with the standard knob conversion.

We will also have another batch of the standard and XL models available in a few weeks.

I have a late 60s Progress -- is this vintage able to be converted to a Megress ? I remember reading somewhere that some of the older ones have different insides that don't allow for your standard mods.......thanks !

Do you still convert Progress with locking screw?
Thanks,

Well, here's my first razor with the set screw idea. Turned out great. The knob is an oversized piece of brass hex (5/8" across the flats). The set screw holds the adjustment perfectly.

I noticed the custom knobs appear to be different than earlier in this thread...have your customs knobs changed or are there options on which customs knobs are available?
Custom as in the stainless knobs? I have changed/refined/tweaked dimensions over the years on the angles and such but the basic dimensions like diameter and length have remained constant.

I like the ones on the first screen of this thread...almost has a lug nut vibe going one with the indents inward...it appears the curent have move of a simplier design..does that sound accurate?
If you're talking about the ones above, they are made from hexagonal stock. The current ones still have the flutes milled in them like the originals on the first page.

does the Mergress conversion include adjusting the blade exposure problem....i might have lined up a Progress, but the seller says it has 1 side more aggressive then the other.
just wondering
I have been able to correct it sometimes but it's not a guarantee. The best bet is to get a Progress that you are happy with first and then send it for conversion.

Is the new machined part glued together?
I read that a few pages back and that was a huge turn-off for an otherwise fantastic upgrade.
Hi,
Yes, the plastic knob is cut off and the new one is epoxied on. The existing number ring and "stem" assembly are still used allowing it to be calibrated like the original. If it were one machined piece there would be no easy way to calibrate a number scale.
Thanks,
Eric

I would prefer something that will last forever. Say someone doesnt care about the numbers lining up (it's all relative-right); can you machine a solid piece? Or machine the solid piece and then index 0 dot after fiitiment? Just a thought.

I'm glad I came across this thread. I've liked the Progress but was astonished when I found out the adjustment knob was plastic and not brass. It's always looked like brass in pictures I've seen of it and made an assumption. So there's hope that I may soon own one now! I've been looking for a reasonably priced modern version of a Fatboy to own and now I may have found it. I just can't convince myself to pay $150 for a decidedly humongous Vision. I may have to sample your craft. I may have to bite the bullet and get me one 'o them Progress razors and let you jinx it with your magic.
Just received another good sized shipment of Progresses for conversion. These are the latest version with the new packaging.
I'll be starting on them this weekend so keep an eye on Lee's site in the next week or so for availability.
Thanks!

Got my Mergress XL from Lee two weeks ago and fell in love with it after first shave. The only my concern is weight. I fell it little bit too heavy.
Right after shaving I think that it does not matter. It delivers great shave, best in my life so far, what else do I need? It's just matter of days or weeks to get used to its heaviness. But later my seconds thought is may be regular or long handle Mergress would be even better for me. :-)
Eric,
Can you please make my life easier and tell me what the weight difference between regular, long handle and XL
Thanks,
Igor
Hi Igor,
Thanks for the compliments!
The Regular Mergress weighs 101 grams and is 3 - 9/16" long.
The XL Mergress weighs 123 grams and is 4 - 3/16" long.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

I was a patient man in my teens and 20s. I am becoming less so as I get older, so I snagged a "Mergress" and a Progress from the B/S/T.
I tried the Mergress for the first time a couple of nights ago and really enjoyed the experience. Very smooth, very easy to work with in all respects. My only initial issue is the weight - I have always preferred a lighter razor.
I have only shaved with it once but it shows promise for becoming a "keeper". Nice work Eric!

My only initial issue is the weight - I have always preferred a lighter razor.
I'm the other end of the spectrum, I rotate through 4 or 5 razors and all of them are on the heavy side. One of my favorites is the Merkur 43C weighing in at over 5 oz. This will be a plus for me.

This is what worked for me. I also found out Eric was too busy for PM's. I found the same thing out about Lee. Truth is you can select your purchase from Phil (BullGoose) and he'll ship it directly to Eric. Saves one shipping charge this way. Then email Eric to let him know it's coming and request his order form, fill it out, include a check to him, his upgrade is $40 assuming you're not looking for anything too special. By the time your check gets to Eric he will already have your razor in hand. The whole process took only 11 days for me from the day I ordered the razor to shaving the evening I received it. I believe it actually comes out a few bucks cheaper this way than going directly through the sole vendor. I would do this again in a heartbeat.

Hi Eric,
im wondering if I pay you through PayPal, could we have the razor sent directly to you for the upgrade?
Hi Everyone, here we go:
Possible to get one now or just wait for Lees to get one?
Complete razors are only available from Lee's. I can modify a Progress you send me into a Mergress though.

Should be all caught up with mods after this weekend.
Thanks Everyone.

Those are gorgeous! I can't decide if I like the long handle with short knob, or short handle with long knob. I have a feeling this is going to push me into getting a Progress now. Thanks for feeding my addiction. FWIW, I would definitely be down to purchase a prebuilt, if they became available.

I just realized that there are 37 pages of posts here. Sorry. It looks like I may have to check out Lee's.

I was convinced I wanted a short handle or XL but only the long were available at Lee's so I went for it anyway and I'm glad I did, it's been a great razor. Weight and balance work well for me and there's plenty of handle to move around on. It's one of my favorites and produces great shaves. No doubt the Progress is a good razor by itself but I believe the extra weight (and the nice knob) make Mer's mods worth the extra effort.

Why one? Why not all of them? (This is what I tell myself. I have a standard one, and want a long and XL [and maybe a long XL? :scared:])

Can't really fault your logic!

Hey Mer -
You upgraded my Progress about 2 years ago and I love it. I recently started having trouble getting the head off to remove the blade. At one point, I pulled out the dial accidentally trying to take of the head with the blade. When trying to put it back together, I noticed their was a metal ring that was cracked. I managed to put the razor back together, but was curious if the cracked ring would be causing the head to stick. If so, should I replace the ring and where would I get a ring to replace it?
Still love the razor. Thanks for a great upgrade. Any recommendations for maintenance besides scrubbing bubbles? It seems like it needs regular lubrication.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The "crack" is intentional. It's a split ring that holds the knob assembly in place with spring tension on the walls of the handle. You probably noticed that you had to squeeze it together to get the knob back in the handle.
I put some mineral oil on the threads when I ship new ones. Definitely a good "bathroom" cleaner to keep corrosion and build up (soap scum, hard water stains) at bay. I like CLR Kitchen & Bathroom Cleaner. It comes in a yellow spray bottle.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

You were exactly right with having the squeeze the ring.
I will give the CLR and mineral oil a try. This is great insight. Thanks!

I have a question. I know part of the Mergress service is to calibrate it so that when it's fully closed, it's at 1. What exactly does that mean? I purchased one from a member of a different forum, and when I turn it all the way back, it isn't at 1. I haven't really looked to make sure, but it may be possible that it doesn't go any lower from that point down. I just want to understand what I should be looking at, how it should be.

I believe that is to simply standardize the settings so everyone is on the same page when discussing the varying levels of aggressiveness. The razor will function perfectly whether it starts at "1" or some other number, as the functionality of opening up remains the same. It's when Shaver A says he regularly shaves at setting "3"...this may equal Shaver B's setting of "2.5" for instance, without this standardization. If I'm mistaken, someone please advise...but this is how I understand it.

Purchased a custom Mergress awhile back (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/10173-Mergress-Merkur-Progress-Upgrade?p=2243776#post2243776) but sadly I've been using it less as late because I have a problem where one side is noticeably sharper than the other. Is this normal? How does one fix this?
I know I'm putting it back together properly and that it is squeaky clean. Is there a way to calibrate it myself to fix this?

And a follow up, between a short handle and long handle progress which is longer when you compare the two? The top portion that holds the blade or the knob assembly?
Actually I might just break down and buy another one for travel!

I had the same issue for the longest time. What I have to do is watch the blade alignment when I place it in the razor. When I start to tighten the head, I turn it once or so and look at the blade alignment on both sides. Each blade is different in the head, so I push the blade or twist the head to get the blade with similar exposure on each side. For me, the alignment could be that one side of the blade is more exposed, or the blade does not set straight top to bottom (one end of the blade may be more exposed on the comb than the other end on the same side of the razor).
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I cleaned up the razor this weekend and the CLR/Mineral Oil combination worked great. While disassembling the razor to clean it, I noticed something that looks odd. The spring loaded bottom portion of the head comes out of the razor. When I try to remove the blade, the top and bottom of the head both come out. In looking at the bottom head piece, the end that is in the handle is jagged and rusted. I suspect this is not supposed to be removed. Can you confirm this?
The razor still works, but I am curious if it is something I can fix.

Had mine shipped to me a while back but gave it to my wife to present to me on my birthday (last month). Unfortunately she forgot where she put it for a few days... Loving it! Dial it up for the first pass on longer days, and dial it down for my final passes...
I have the XL and LOVE the weight at the end of the handle with a solidly weighted head. It is a constant reminder to hold the tip and let the weight of the head do the work.
Thanks Eric!!!
This was my first DE. I really do like it but I also have a problem with one side shaving more or less close than the other. I have tried to reposition the blade to get even response from each side but it is not to be. Maybe time for a new razor.
