View Full Version : Do you rinse your face after applying Witch Hazel?

Hi Guys,

I've previously used an alum block after shaving and thought I'd get some Thayers Witch Hazel. Tried it this morning, and felt it worked well.

My dilemma was, do I leave it on my face, or let it dry and then rinse it off with cold water before applying A/S balm or splash? :confused1

I've read through previous posts of routines but all seem different. Is there a right or wrong way to apply witch hazel, should you rinse it off with cold water to close the pores?

Thoughts, theories, feedback or ideas most welcome.

Can't speak for people who use straight witch hazel, but I have a heavy witch hazel Bay Rum aftershave I use (about 50% witch hazel), so I guess you could say I leave it on.

I use Thayers Lavender Witch Hazel after every shave. I do not wash it off. After it has dried, I apply some type off aftershave. Oh and prior to the witch hazel, I use an Alum block... Might be overkill but it works for me.

I splash on superhazel (no rinsing), wander around a bit, then come back for an AS. Overkill, yes, but burn free.

After shaving, I rinse with tepid water, then apply Thayers lavender witch hazel and allow to air dry for a bit while I clean up around the sink. I then rinse with cool water to close the pores, and then apply my after shave.

I leave it on and my face is basically dry by the time I get my shaving gear cleaned up and put away. Then I put on my aftershave splash.

I rinse, then apply witch hazel. I let it completely dry, then apply aftershave. I usually do my cleanup (rinse brush, scuttle, razor, etc) while the w.h. is drying.

Apply and let dry. Proceed with whatever you wish to top it off with.

After shaving in the morning I rinse my face and dry it and apply the witch hazel and while it is drying I start getting dressed. Before I put my shirt on I apply my after shave and finish dressing! I use it like a toner before my AS!
Great stuff!

My witchhazel is part of my aftershave splash. So, I leave it on.

Witch hazel is my aftershave. I leave it on and let it dry.

Another air-dryer here. Then the aftershave. Or balm, if it's cool out.

I let it dry. Then I usually add an after shave.

1. Witch hazel
2. Clean shave den while WH air dries (1 minute)
3. Apply AS to dry face

I usually do the same. Apply the witch hazel, let it air dry and then I use an aftershave balm/milk (occasionally).

I always rinse after using alum. Witch hazel, however, stays on.

I splash on the Thayers w/ aloe vera and let it dry. Nothing after that. I also shave at night after my shower so I generally don't put anything else on. It seems to work for me.

No. I either finish with it, or let it dry then apply AS.

Typically just finish with WH, then use cologne.

I used to splash some water on me face before using a bit of corn huskers lotion. Now after alum block on wet face, dry, use witch hazel don't dry, and apply CHL, let dry and then either nothing or a fragrance. FWIW, I have used Thayers non-alcohol, pricey, I have also bought WH at Safeway, (local grocery). Same stuff, much better price.

Shave
Warm Water Rinse
Cold Water Rinse
Alum Block (and clean up gear)
Cold Water Rinse and Towel Dry
THW alcohol-free toner
ASB or ASM to still wet face

Of course this can change, but at the moment...

I've been finding this routine working really well for me recently:

Right after the shave and rinse, I shake some witch hazel in my cupped hand, followed by a few shakes of aftershave. Then I splash that on my face and neck. Nice and cooling. Cuts the A/S scent somewhat (for some reason, aftershaves last all day on me). Then I let it dry for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, mess with my hair, etc.. then I apply a balm, usually Nivea or L'Oreal. By the time I get to work my face is smooth as can be. I've been going with the light aftershave scents this summer, as opposed to straight up cologne. Add some talc, I just love that "clean" feeling.

Me too. Thayers lemon witch hazel. Wonderful stuff. Dries quickly and leaves my face feeling great.

This is the way I am currently doing it...

Warm Rinse
Cold Rinse
Witch Hazel - let air dry as my kitt is cleaned and stowed
AS - usually Clubman

Is there another way?

Edit: WAIT! What is "superhazel"? I use the mere mortal Dickinson's Witch Hazel :)

Nope...I just splash it on, let it dry, and then fly out the door.

Not quite what you're asking, but in the middle of the rinse, while still uisng lukewarm water, I splash on a healthy amount of alcohol-based after shave, and leave it on while rinsing out the brush, then, finally switching to cold water to finish the rinse. After that, partly depending on how much burn I felt from the alcohol, I'll pick out a real after shave to use from alcohol-based after shave, witch hazel, alcohol-based balm, cream balm, a combination, or nothing. I could probably swap the early & generous alcohol splash for witch hazel. Might try that.

Do a lot of people splash it on or apply it with a cotton pad or something?

I didn't have those pads Mantic mentioned, but with cotton balls I kept getting cotton fibers stuck in my face.

Thayers Super witch hazel or whatever it is called doesn't absorb all the way on me. I can feel it washing off if I splash some water on my face a couple hours after application. It also feels a little tacky when it drys.

I just picked up some Witch Hazel myself (Dickinson's) and look foward to adding it to my shaving routine. Thinking mine will go something like this..

Warm rinse
Lather and shave
Warm Rinse
Cold Rinse
Witch Hazel, applied with cotton botton, air dry
After shave balm or milk

Mr. Clean

Flesh, of course it is a matter of personal preference, but try losing the cotton "button" and just pour some witch hazel in the palm (ala AS or cologne) and splash it on.

I tried doing that, but really I just prefer using my hands like I do with an aftershave. I use both witch hazel and aftershave

Why are you doing two rinses, one warm one cold right after shaving? Seems like over kill. I do a cold rinse after shaving, apply WH, and then AS optional.

ProphetNoir

1. Witch hazel
2. Clean shave den while WH air dries (1 minute)
3. Apply AS to dry face

Same here.

Cold water rinse

Witch hazel
let evaporate dry
After shave balm
