How do you keep track when it is time to change blade? Do you change when you feel during a shave that this is the last shave or do you know for experience that this blade gives me four shaves?

I have noticed that with my usual blade Gillette yellows that I get four good shaves. The problem is that if I don't keep track of the blade I normally don't notice that until the fifth shave:frown:

So do you have a system for this? Maybe something in the bathroom that markes the number of shaves for the blade.

when it starts to pull I changed blade (so what if you have to change it halfway through your fifth shave)

some guys also keep a dice next to the razor, with the number of shaves on that blade facing up. You can also use a whiteboard marker to write on your mirror

I basically give all my blades 3 shaves ( and if it is a particularly good blade I go 4 days ) then ditch it.

I like the white board marker idea... I'll tell the wife the marker is for love letters LOL - However, I know she would end up stealing the marker and start the honeydo lists on the mirror =)

I change mine on Sunday and Wednesday before that morning's shave. That way I have three or four shaves per blade. It's easier for me to remember a specific day than to count the number of shaves per blade.

It also makes my blade math easier. Two blades per week. 104 blades per year.

I write it down, change blades after 5 shaves.

I started wetshaving 5 months ago and have been keeping keeping track of blade, soap, cream, aftershave and balm usage. So far the only thing I've used up is one puck of Van Der Hagen soap (40 shaves) and one small tube (1.7oz) of Bigelow cream from Bath and Bodyworks (25 shaves).

I know, I need to get a life...

Liked the idea of using a dice. Easy to hide in a corner. Now I only need to find one, there have to be a dice around here somewhere.

The dice idea is pretty sweet. I even had a black colored die that matches my brush/razor stand. :thumbup1:

It's a six sided die, if you are using blades past 6 shaves, I think there is something really wrong with you. lol.:lol:

You can get 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20, and 100 sided dice. For those whose mileage may vary.

Yes you can. Any good gaming shop will carry them in multiple colors, and sizes.

You could use a 100 side die to track how many shaves you get out of a tub of TOBS, if you are like me, and curious about such things.:w00t:

+1 i could def. see my wife doing this. the dice idea is really good i think i might have to do that. I have a games workshop around my way so they should have some nice dice.

I get two shaves per blade.

I keep four different razors on the countertop for my rotation ... choosing which one I use on a little more than a whim.

If any razor I pick up has a blade already in it, I know its been used 1 time, and I toss it at the end of the shave, leaving it empty for next time.

I simply don't track the blades because I usually have several loaded up at the same time. When they start to pull, they get changed.

The pulling is something that I found very difficult to feel with the cartridge systems because they tend to tug right out of the box.

Spendthrift!

Normally the last shave is on a Friday with the blade, and the first is either Saturday or Sunday depending on my schedule and plans.

I can get 6 good shaves out of most blades so that makes things easier.

Blade Math is even more simplified. 52 blades a year max.

Oh, and I also use an excel spread sheet.

I only use one blade for all my razors. I switch DE's every second shave.

Once I'm done shaving, if I was using a new blade I take it out of the razor, rinse the soap scum off it, and hit it with some rubbing alcohol. I place it on a memo pad in my cabinet.

If I took the blade that I was shaving with that day off the memo pad, then I throw it away after I'm done with it.

As has been mentioned here already, I too usually try to stick with Sunday and Wednesday as change days.

I'd really like to be one of those folks who can get a week out of a blade. For me, though its about 5-6 shaves. I change them before they get too dull, its not hard to tell.

I usually change mine after 3 shaves. If I stretch it out to four I do notice some tugging. It's not horribly bad, but why take the chance.

That's good though. You can just tell her that you forgot because the mirror fogged up and when you wiped it, the list accidentally got erased.

+ 1 on the dice idea ! I may have to try this one,it's an easy way to track how good one blade is over another.

I guess I'm lucky and get seven decent shaves a week out of one Derby blade. I change blades/razors (and clean the used razor) every Sunday after shaving, so I have a new sharp blade heading in to Monday morning's work week. The blade is just a touch dull by Sunday, but the weekend is when I have more time to prepare gobs of warm lather and thoroughly enjoy a S..L..O..W multi-pass shave!

Three shaves or five days, whichever comes first. I find that after 5 days, no mater how well I rinse my blades, they start to get a weird film/coating on them which translates into an irritable shave.

I know a lot of you might think I'm crazy, but I actually get a full month of almost daily shaves out of my M3 cartridge without much of a noticeable difference in shave quality. Heresy, I know, and on more than one count! "She's a witch - burn her!"

I just make sure the blade is clean & dry afterwards, and try to keep the razor as much as I can out of the water (I used to soak it along with my brush in the sink while I showered). My beard hair (like what's left on the rest of my head) is almost baby-fine. Think that makes a difference? As the French say, "Chaqu'un a son gout".

Monday morning is new blade day. I don't shave on the weekend.

If I need to I put in a new blade.

The idea with the dice thing is pretty cool. However, I will throw the cowpie in the punchbowl and just say to blow your mind that I don't count, I just use it once and toss it, the DE blades are cheap in comparison to the cartridges and I don't worry about nicks with an old blade that way, good luck, bc
