View Full Version : Recommend me an Omega boar

Yes, I know there are several threads with the same question, however, I have found none that addresses my problem. I currently have a Shavemac D01 with a 21 mm knot and a 50 mm loft. I love the size of the brush. I might even go so far as to say it's a little too big. It seems that Omega boar brushes are all very tall.
I want a shorter one that is scrubby and has an incredibly strong backbone. I'd prefer one with a nicer handle, but as long as it doesn't crack or fall apart, I don't really care.

I recommend the 31064.
Take a look at the Omega 10029 (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?ltr=O&t=39046).
It is one of the shortest (if not the shortest) lofted Omega boar brushes and is scrubby with a good, strong backbone. Nice handle? Whelp, since boar brushes are typically in the $10-$25 range there really aren't any "nice" handles ... mostly plastic.

Do either of you (or anyone else) know how the lofts of these two compare? The overall brush height varies by 0.8 cm (10029 is shorter).
Thanks.
EDIT: Jeremy, I like you ShaveWiki's wishlist. How much of your stuff could I get for a pony?

Probably too small but I think they are nice.

The 10029 is a tiny brush.
I wish they made the 10048 wih slightly shorter loft, it would be perfect. Perhaps the 31064 is perfect, but I can't get hold of one for love nor money in blighty :(

I just measured my 10029:
Hair height = 51mm
Handle height = 53mm
Overall height = 104mm
Knot diameter = 25mm
Now, while these numbers seem average (i.e., not small or large) for a badger brush, but they are small for a boar brush. The boar hair is much stiffer and more rigid than a badger, so ~50mm hair height on a boar is a far cry from ~50mm on a badger. I've got a Rooney Finest with a 42mm hair height and this boar feels stiffer despite being 9mm taller. The 25mm knot is also a bit deceiving as boars don't really bloom like a badger. Honestly, I was shocked when I took the measurements because this brush feels much smaller when used. This brush "feels" about the same size as a Rooney #1/1 ... if that makes any sense.
Oh yeah ... how about an Omega brush for a pony (we'll each cover our own shipping):wink:

I just got West Coast Shaving's $9 Omega. It's huge!
When I sized it up next to my Rooney 3/1 I didn't know whether to lather with it or wet mop a butt.

Just a thought...
I have an Omega 49 which sounds like exactly the opposite of what you want. But I really like the lightweight hollow plastic handle. It means the bristles stay in water more easily. The balance takes a moment to get used to but it isn't bad at all. Can't beat it for $10

series 310XX anything. Softest boar bristle. They break in so well after continuous use. Can't ask for anything more in the lathering Nirvana department !!

I have a red 10065, with about a 52-53mm loft. Overall it's about 103-105mm. Only like $16 shipped. Other colors are available, including white. It's a nice little brush.

Do any US merchants have it? I'm not paying $22 to have a boar brush shipped to me.

Not sure about US sellers, but you could PM dridiot. I think I've seen him sell them on eBay, but it could be a different model.

You could try ShoeBox ShaveShop. That's where I just got my #10077 from the other day. They have a large selection of Omega boar brushes along with a few other manufacturers. Shipping only ran me $5.79 for the brush, some Cella, an Arko shave stick, and a package of injector blades. I think they charge shipping based on how much you buy. So if you're getting just a brush, your shipping cost should be cheaper.

Oh and I should mention that I don't believe they carry the #10029, but they should have something comparable to that in terms of what you're looking for in a knot, Matthew.

Ah.... gotcha.
I had sent a few orders without tracking and delivery confirmation once upon a time, but but of the 6 orders I sent that way, I had three of the deliveries disappear and I had to refund out of pocket. So, I don't offer any less expensive shipping options any longer.

There's nothing wrong with that. $12 is pretty reasonable, though, for sending something across the border. I just would like to purchase it from a US vendor to save money.
