While rummaging about on Youtube, I came across a stand-up comedian by the name of Dana O'Briain. He's rather sharp, and puts that sharpness to the test against, you guessed it, the Fusion razor.

Enjoy!

Saw this DVD last weekend - hilarious! Particularly liked the line about how you were going to access the "fifth blade".

I'm afraid I came over all shave geeky and told the folks I was watching this with, that there is actually a six blade monster now.

Thanks, Jan. If I weren't already so jaded by how stupid razor producers must think we all are, I'd be gobsmacked at how inane this thing is. It is nothing short of comical. But I guess if Gillette could look at that Onion article (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33930) and still market the Fusion with a straight face, anything is possible. Having said that, if Dorco blades are as dull as everyone says, maybe they really do require six of them to give a halfway decent shave.

There is another 6 blade called the Shavemate Titan as well. It has a shaving cream cartridge in the handle :001_tt1:.

Oh yeah...I remember the Titan for its handle. I forgot it had six blades. My memory lapses on these razors is either due to the fact that I profoundly do not care about them, or I'm repressing the horrible thought of their existence from my consciousness. Or maybe both.

What blows my mind is it was written almost a full two years before the Fusion came out, and almost every single thing they absurdly prophesized actually did happen two years later. I almost wonder if the folks at Gillette R&D read the article and thought their CEO actually wrote it.

Thanks for the laugh.

The onion article is great, I read it before Fusion came out and thought.....NO WAY! But they did it.

I think the reason the price of Mach III blades went up recently was too many people were switching back to save cash in this rough economy.

Funny. I love it when people take the crap out of the Fusion!

Well, they can hardly make a new razor with more than 5 blades now, and the 6-bladed razor is, as I'm sure its manufacturer knows too, a bollocky gimmick.

Apart from that, Gillette marketing the Fusion by downplaying on the Mach3 (having sportsmen who get paid more for the single commercial than I make in a year kick a Mach3-set from out of the hands of an obviously not-quite-yet evolved male) as well as turning their attention to the shave as a whole, with preshave scrub gel (which is not necessary), shaving goo (which is awful) and aftershave balm (which is useful, but available in much better fragrances) speaks volumes. For the record, I don't think the Fusion is a bad razor, it gets the job done, true---at least with me---but it's so damned overengineered. There's a landing strip so big that for hard-to-get-at places a sixth blade had to be mounted on the back of the cartridge head.

I suppose that's what you get if men insist (or are told to insist) that you can shave perfectly in under 30 seconds.

First of all, that's a great bit of standup. Second, yeah, Ray, the accent does help.

"Hey guys, didja see the paper today?? The boss said we're going to five blades! I mean, the CEO of Gillette, guys -- he declared it in print. There's no going back now, so we have to make it work! I want proposals on my desk by Monday!"

+1 AWESOME! :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Really, Paul, you'd never seen this before? Oh man, now it's got a sense of deep, dark irony that it didn't have when I first read it (before there was a four or five or six-bladed razor). I love that article. The Onion have some of the most talented writers out there.

Well, they can hardly make a new razor with more than 5 blades now...

I would like to think you're right, but back when the Mach3 was the thing, I never would have guessed Schick would have had the stones to do four blades, and a five bladed razor would have seemed beyond ridiculous. Now, I honestly cannot second guess what Gillette will do next. As it is, we've got the geniuses at Dorco and Titan upping the ante to six. A seven-bladed Gillette razor seems too stupid for words, and would be too predictable anyway, so you're probably right that Gillette won't go past five. But who knows?

I know exactly what you mean. In reading it, I have to remind myself it was written two years before the Fusion. So much of it is spot on, it seems like the writer is simply spoofing what had already happened, instead of painting a totally absurd, "what if" portrait of a seemingly unlikely future scenario.

Well, the problem they're facing is that they sort-of imply that shaving is a matter of moving the razor once (at most twice) across the skin, and be done with it. This applies equally to men and women---the latter are targetted by the Venus commercials. If one needs more blades, they must be made smaller and smaller lest the cartridge head grows too big. For 'body razors' larger cartridges are not much of an issue: the body's curvature is far smaller. But for the face you do run into size limitations. If the blades are too thin, they bend too much. Steel is a versatile material, but can only be taken so far. If you embed them in plastic of some sort, the razor clogs too easily. Coatings have been attempted from alpha diamond to titanium---which yield blades so sharp they do more harm than good. We have lubra strips, rubber fins and for those who enjoy it, vibrations. You can't do much more---not without making the cartridges unaffordable, that is.

That's why Gillette ventured into the pre-shave-shave-post-shave business. My guess is that we'll see a second shave product appear for a second pass before a few years, and perhaps a bigger cartridge for those who shave hair elsewhere on their body. Another option are cartridges tuned to a specific beard type: men's hair is not created equal, after all.

Now that's thinking outside the box. My speculations were so pathetically linear. I guess that's why I don't work for Gillette...although you could.
