a friends father has asked for a hot lather machine for christmas and he wants to know what machine is most reccommendable. he would like one which has easy to find cream and hopefully one that he can buy new for a cheap price. any reccomendation would be welcome. thanks

My understanding is that the minimum amount of cream required for a professional hot lather machine (like the Lather King used in barber shops) makes it a nuisance for home use. Conair makes heating/dispensing machines for goo-in-a-can of all sizes. If your friend's father uses canned goop, then maybe that would work fine. But, in all, the best home-use hot lather machine is a nice brush and a scuttle!

I used to use those shaving cream/gel heaters they worked o.k. but they only lasted 6 months.

to me the lather machines are just one more thing i'd have to carry on a vacation, that's why i've never worried about messing with them, plus i like making the lather on my own.
At the local TJ Maxx today I saw a few lather machines (Conair?) that used the canned refills.

this Conair goop warmer was the last thing I bought before getting into "real" shaving. They did in fact "warm" the lather, but because the can itself and its entire contents got heated every morning the integrity of the can's contents seemed to quickly get compromised. Meaning, the lather consistently got thinner. :thumbdown
