My attempts to brew this in a press and drip resulted in a sour cup, reminiscent of under-extracted espresso. Then I used an Aeropress and found a delicious and surprisingly mellow cup. The flavors from the Aeropress-made coffee are deep, rich, and complex. The body & mouth feel are rich & thick. The overall taste sensation is mellow, dark, and ethereal, ever changing, and hard to pin down. A new sensation with every sip. The care, knowledge, and experience that Jason puts into his coffee is obvious. The other coffees I've tried from AJ Coffee Co have been excellent. He does tend to surf the edge, trying to develop deep flavors to the fullest, while staying on the light side of roastiness. This gives his coffee a taste sensation I've not experienced elsewhere. You won't find this kind of roast anywhere else. For that alone, it's worth giving his coffee a try. For more details, see my review of AJ Coffee Co. El Salvador Siberian Estate 100% Bourbon. Ratings (Clearly, I don't know how to rate things. If these were wines, a professional review would rate them 10-15 point higher.) Price: Artisan coffee is never cheap, though this is on the less expensive side for true artisan coffee. Shipping cost is reasonable, but is factored in as part of the cost, lowering the score. Quality: The care put into this coffee can't be beat. Value: This is what artisan coffee is all about. The price may seem steep, but it's well worth the price for what you get. Since not everyone would agree, I won't push the rating too high. Flavor: Unique and mysterious. Aroma: A rich roast destroys the more volatile aroma compounds, but what remains is delicious. Packaging: Nothing further could be done to improve the product, but more polished labels might look better. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=199709&title=aj-coffee-co-black-torpedo-espresso-blend&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=199709&title=aj-coffee-co-black-torpedo-espresso-blend&cat=66 Tue, 29 Mar 2011 01:23:44 -0600 AJ Coffee Co--Guatemala Antigua Finca Santa Clara

by: SiBurning

Description: This Guatemala Antigua from AJ Coffee Co. is a pleasant, well balanced cup of coffee. Rich flavors in a deep roast, delicately balanced to bring out the deeper flavors, including a bare hint of roasty flavor that never hides the lighter notes underneath. While rich in flavor, it's rather mellow, and would complement rather than compete with other subtle flavors. It's a great coffee to go with delicate treats, or for every day drinking. A good average that could please most any palate, without being bland or boring. The care, knowledge, and experience that Jason puts into his coffee is obvious. The timing couldn't have been better. My roasting machine had just broken down. While I don't like to review gifts, I was in need of good coffee, so I placed an order for 2 bags, and he sent along a third bag gratis. I left it to Jason to choose the coffees. The care that Jason takes in roasting his coffee is obvious. He talks a lot about roasting profiles--a sort of temperature surfing--and it shows. It's like nothing I've tasted before. The roasts are deep and complex, yet light and delicate. It's a fine balancing act, like surfing along the top of a wave, keeping a fine balance between a deeply developed, rich roast, without losing the delicate nuances and lighter notes. There's a frank roast smell to the beans, but the roast taste in the cup is light and never hides the more delicate flavors. This fine balance might not be to everyone's palate. My own tastes--in food, coffee, or anything else--tend toward highlighting the best parts of a bean, even if that leaves some defects intact. Even so, there's plenty of days in a year, and there's good reason to enjoy these unique coffees once in a while. While I favor lighter roasts, AJ Coffee's deep, complex roasts never cross the line into the dark & roasty. The El Salvador Siberian Estate 100% Bourbon is my favorite. Light, sweet, fruity notes meld into deep, chocolate-like flavors, balanced against a slight but natural bitterness. The cup was great no matter what contraption it was brewed in. Long and slow brewing times were both excellent. I found it rewarding to increase the amount of beans in my cup. It seemed to never get bitter. While delicious straight, the sweet chocolate and floral flavors only improved as I slowly added my usual milk and sugar. This coffee is truly mouth watering. With each sip, new flavors tantalized my tongue, begging me to drink more. The coffee comes packed in sealed & resealable, coated foil bags with a button for off-gassing. Depending on the coffee, the label includes notes about the coffee including the roasting date, composition if it's a blend, the estate it was grown on, awards the coffee received, brewing hints, etc. Freshly roasted, small batch artisan coffee isn't cheap, and with many companies, the artisan label is merely a marketing ploy. Not so with AJ Coffee Co. Prices might be a dollar or two over the average for the category, but the care and experience that goes into roasting these beans puts them in the true artisan category. Don't look forward to that any time in your lifetime, though. Price - 3oz for right around $5. You may need to do a bit of digging at your local cobbler or, a foreign concept to most of you (/sarcasm), order it online. At that price point, it's no more expensive than mass-market Kiwi. Quality - Recommended to me by some older Army buddies of mine, this polish wax was standard military issue back when they wore real boots  I'm just joshin', newer vets; don't take me seriously. That aside, after having used most of the other waxes and polishes on the market, I can honestly say that no other comes to producing the protection and shine quality of Lincoln. Looking to prolong the life of your shoes and boots? Lincoln does it. Looking for that classic military spit-shine? It does that a hell of a lot better than Kiwi. Value - Less product; more results. 10. Packaging - It comes in a can. Can has top. Can holds polish. In a ‘nut shell’…a very well rolled cigar and a ‘work of art’. Pre-Smoke: Very nice aroma and like with most other Cohiba cigars, you will be greeted with beautiful aromas each time you open your humidor. The aroma is soft and woody with a hint of roasted coffee bean. This cigar was a easy task to clip (which can be problematic with smaller cigars), with no problems with un-raveling or ripping of the wrapper. Lighting presented no problems either and did not start "tunneling" or "canoeing". In fact, the burn was very ‘even’ and the draw was quite easy from the fact this cigar was not too tightly rolled. Smoking: When smoking this cigar, you will be pleasantly surprised by its smooth flavor. The combination of flavors is not very complex, due to its small ring gauge. Faint flavors of creamy cocoa and roasted coffee bean hit the palate first. This cigar has a medium body with hint of earthy and soft woody flavor and a hint of sweetness. This cigar does not overpower the senses at all. These flavors are more pronounced as you smoke this Seoane (small panatela), and did not become hot and/or harsh near the end. In addition, as you smoke this cigar you will be attracted by the flavor and amount of fragrant smoke, but you may wish this cigar were larger and able to display more complexity. Furthermore, the burn time was about 30-45 (depending on your smoking style), minutes of pure Cohiba bliss. Conclusion: A very good and consistent Cohiba and perfect when paired with a cup of strong coffee and/or with a ‘snifter’ of fine Brandy or Cognac. From the triple fermenting and slight aging, the secret blending and the finest choices of the Cuban tobaccos, the Exquisito is an outstanding cigar for those desiring a rich, medium smoke in a Seoane format. Being perfect in construction, it has a beautiful slightly oily wrapper topped off by the Cohiba signature triple capped pigtail head. Pre-Smoke: The cigar’s wrapper is dark brown in color. It smells great, meaning it has that Cohiba bouquet that I still find very hard to define (a common dilemma I believe amongst us Cohiba smokers). Frankly, what more can I add? It’s one extremely elegant and gorgeous presentation…exactly what I would expect a Cohiba to look like. Smoking: Wow…the oh-so sweet aroma! First, it starts off with this amazing creamy flavor. Then, it’s followed by hints of almonds, faint hints of wood and spice, caramel and light cappuccino undertones. And that this point, I am just falling in love with this cigar. The burn is even with no tunneling, and the finish is mellow and long on the palate and fills the top of your tongue with a ton of complexity. It’s one of those cigars that fills your mouth full of flavor and it just feels like it will last until ‘the end of time’. As you move on to the half way point, it goes from medium to a fuller body and loads up on the cappuccino and almond flavor. It also feels like the cigar perfumes with clouds of intoxicating cigar smoke with every puff, which is perfect because that means more flavor. On the other hand, the super long finish and very sophisticated blending of tobaccos was just simply amazing. Conclusion:. As the ‘Prince’ of the Vitola size, the Lanceros is a beautiful cigar and the perfect cigar for long-term aging. With nearly two (2) hours of pleasure (depending how you smoke),…it was the perfect match to great flavor and aroma...especially when paired with a Vintage Madeira or Cognac. Enjoy!!! :biggrin1: Christopher :badger: " Those who Smoke Cohibas will never die of Cancer...but those who don't...will die of Envy". This cigar is truly elegant and simply represents a classic Havana. Appearance & Construction: The dark chocolate brown Colorado silky smooth wrapper is firm with no really soft spots out of the ordinary. The Cohiba world famous triple cap is a nice touch as well. To briefly sum up, this is one great looking cigar with a nice firm feel. Pre-light: Being one of the most pleasant of the Cohiba ‘Classic Line Series’, the first thing you notice are the fresh, grassy, earth aromas, before lighting. Flavor: I don't think I've ever smoked a "perfect" cigar but this was pretty close. This cigar is medium bodied and mild strength and has lots of complex flavors including espresso and chocolate. This cigar is nice with a hint of spice, just as you'd expect from a Cohiba. Smoking Characteristics: The cigar lit easily and burned very even. It had a nice lush draw (unusually so for a Panatela of this size) that produced volumes of smoke and the aroma is first class. The mild, medium-bodied cigar has an easy draw and the toasty notes add to the creaminess of this cigar. Halfway through the smoke there are wood and leather notes which develop and then give way to dry earth aromas. The second third is marked by a slight woody / cedar spiciness Burning: Dark honey notes with a gentle earthiness with a even burn with no ‘tunneling’ either. Final: The finish is smooth, very aromatic, and its memory lingers for a while. The cigar smokes cool yet has warmth to it, and burns slowly, providing a dark gray ash. Overall Impression: This cigar was truly a smoking experience and if you're looking for a classic Cuban that will leave you in cigar heaven…then this is your Havana cigar. It cost me $20 for a nicely made 750mL bottle that included 2 whiskey glasses. As I can't think of any other way to drink whiskey, I put those glasses to use filling them about a finger's width high and sipping slowly. I quickly found that too little would tease me with the flavor and alcohol, while too much would start to muffle the flavor; but taking in between half a teaspoon to half a tablespoon in one sip let the flavor open up in my mouth as I swallowed. This is how I drink whiskey; I don't hammer it down, I don't mix it, I don't add ice or water. Opinions on all of these things vary; mine is to drink it neat or not at all, often while playing piano or reading a book. The quality of Tullamore Dew is what you'd expect of a cheap, blended whiskey: It's obviously not a single-malt Irish aged 15 years in 200 liter Sherry barrels. Tullamore is blended with some sort of grain whiskey, so it's not the smoothest thing in the world and doesn't have the full complexity of an unblended pure pot still Irish whiskey. Although it's not quite a high-end single malt, it's not quite on the level with other low-end brands like Jameson's and Bushmills. Compared to Jameson's Original, Tullamore Dew has noticeably more pronounced flavor and deeper complexity. It's definitely a good value at its price mark. I'd recommend Tullamore Dew highly to anyone looking for something in the $20-$30 range, or anyone looking to try a good Irish whiskey. For the higher end drinkers, Tullamore Dew won't compete well with Red Breast, GreenSpot, or a single malt scotch; but if you're inclined to keep something "cheap" around, this may be your answer. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=152167&title=tullamore-dew&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=152167&title=tullamore-dew&cat=66 Mon, 07 Jun 2010 10:20:32 -0600 Marvis Toothpaste Ginger Mint

by: Luc

Description: What can I say? This baby has such a smooth flavour yet such a great power behind that flavour that it's hard to describe it till you sink a few. Wonderfull full flavour with a touch of port behind an unmistakable scotch front. This has a thick, slightly oily texture with a hint of caramel/chocolate cake, almost like a caramel marmalade. No burn but great power, what a lovely velvety body! The finish isn't long but you remember the last one long after it's gone and you look forward to the next. It does however leave a nice warm feeling going down that lasts. It leaves no bad aftertaste, almost clean and it is a truly unique scotch that stands on it's own that others will try and follow! I'm not a huge alcohol drinker; I make beer and such things, but drink slowly, and don't find myself getting drunk. I tend to keep a drink for over an hour, and often make a rum and coke with just a shot of rum rather than 50-50; when I'm done drinking my BAC is around 0.01, right off the bar stool. My mainstays with rum are a lightly flavored rum and coke-- as stated, some 16 ounce drink with maybe an ounce and a half of rum in it for flavor-- or an additionally spiced "grog" made by mixing hot water with cold rum and a cinnamon stick and/or clove, sometimes an orange wedge, whatever. As it turns out, the flavor of the rum itself is emphasized when you're not downing 6 ounces in 15 minutes; it also turns out I'm not a fan of Baccardi, at all. For my purposes I've found Captain Morgan's to be decent rum, nothing like some of the expensive high-end stuff but not the worst low-end thing you can get. More interestingly, Captain Morgan's Private Stock presents itself as a much smoother drink than regular old Captain Morgan's. This rum can be sipped straight by a non-liquor person that can't take the burn of shooting rum, and actually enjoyed; in fact, I would argue that this rum isn't shot material, as it's too easily enjoyed taken slowly. It comes across as well-balanced, with not too much alcoholic burn and not too much overpowering spice, much more so than regular old Captain Morgan's. And it comes in a cool, pirate-style rectangular bottle with a cork set in a wooden cap. The presentation, taste, and finish all come across, to me, as significantly superior to regular Captain Morgan's; and it comes at only a few dollars more for a fifth, not even leaving the same price range. I was decidedly impressed by this rum, and have taken to using it as a rum "extract" for cooking as well as simply a decent rum to drink, in small quantities of course. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=115363&title=captain-morgan-s-private-stock&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=115363&title=captain-morgan-s-private-stock&cat=66 Mon, 02 Nov 2009 13:14:36 -0700 Courvoisier X.O.

by: Luc

Description: I bought a bottle of Courvoisier XO a month ago (yes and it's almost empty). Price: I gave it a lower grade as I think this is a more than average price that I would normally pay for a bottle. The price is the only factor that will stop me from buying it on a regular basis. Quality: It's there! The intense reddish-brown is just wonderful! You can taste the quality in there and even smell it! Value: Even if the price is a bummer, I do think the bottle is worth the label price. You will get an excellent product! Flavor/aroma: Spices and oranges come to mind first! I am very suprised by the aroma. The alcohol aroma is non-existent. You will feel the warmnest of the drink without choking! I can detect a white grape taste in the finish. Packaging: Nice bottle with a very heavy knob! Overall: Yes, I love that one. It's the kind of bottle that I will buy once every 5 years. I will probably stay with my regular Courvoisier VSOP. Smoky peat and the smells of the sea are what come to mind first when I think of single malt Scotch. It is because of this that Ardbeg 10 is my favorite Scotch, though not necessarily the one I most enjoy drinking. Here at B&B, we're all familiar with the word "reformulation" and just like shaving creams and soaps, spirits with the same label, but different vintages, can be have dissimilarities due to changes in company management, ownership, production equipment, etc. In Whisky Magazine #9 (4/2000), Michael Jackson gave Ardbeg Ten an 8 1/2 and Dave Broom a 9. In Whiskey Magazine #50 (9/2005), Martine Nouet gave it a 4 and Dave Broom a 4 1/2. This shows a lot of variation during batches distilled during the tumultuous small scale years. Although I have not tasted it, the so-called "new" Ardbeg show much promise based on it's "Single Malt Scotch of the Year 2008" status in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. From the tasting notes that I have read, it is a slightly different animal than previous incarnations. Pat's (castlecraver) comments in the October 2008 Speakeasy Spirit of the Month thread reflect this. The specimen under review here was bottled in 2002 under Glenmorangie ownership. It was distilled during Ardbeg's small scale days, 1989-1996, after the distillery was brought out of being mothballed from 1981-1989. Glenmorangie stepped in in 1997 and purchased Ardbeg, probably saving it from permanent closure. My feelings on this particular bottle are in line with the Jackson/Broom thoughts of 2000. Color: Pale straw. Lighter than the typical Islay amber. A deceptive appearance for what follows. Nose: Bold with a blast of smoky peat and a more subtle followup of tar and brine. Something even lighter emerges as well, both sweet and spicy. Body: Big and full without being too thick. Slightly oily. Palate: Again, it begins with a blast of smoke. As the smoke starts to clear, seaweed and tar pop out with a very light hint of sweet citrus. Finish: Peppery, warm, and dry as the ever present smokiness lingers on. All in all, Ardbeg is a very big, powerful whisky, but comfortable at the same time. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but for someone wanting to go beyond the more "well mannered" single malts you typically see behind an average bar and experience something much bolder, give Ardbeg Ten a try. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=105845&title=ardbeg-ten-years-old&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=105845&title=ardbeg-ten-years-old&cat=66 Mon, 31 Aug 2009 21:30:16 -0600 Jack Daniel's Single Barrel

by: Luc

Description: I'm surprised that nobody reviewed this item... There are many wonderful Scotches out there, but this one is something truly special, and in a category of its own. Packaged in a slightly squat, thick-necked bottle, its color is a deep ruby red in the bottle, and a rich mahogany in the glass. Depending on presentation, the Aberlour's nose ranges from caramel and apple, to sherry and almonds, to lightly floral . . . in a nosing glass, however, be prepared to let it "breathe" a long time; that 121.2 proof cask strength is no joke and will singe your nostril hairs but good! Sipped straight, it will make your lips tingle and set your mouth aflame before opening into a rich melange of toffee, smoke, and oak flavors, with an incredibly long sherry finish with hints of licorice and spice. Mouthfeel is smooth and buttery on the tongue, with spice notes occurring along the sides of the tongue and smoke flavors mostly hitting the back of the throat. The high proof accommodates a little spring water or a few rocks extremely well, without surrendering complexity or flavor. As you can see from the images, I tried the full range of tasting experiences, from "wee dram" to Scotch & soda, and the Aberlour a'bunadh was, simply put, astonishing and superb in all of them. Even the most dilute, the Scotch & soda, didn't feel like a sacrilege or a waste . . . in fact, the high proof and intense flavors mean that the first few sips taste like straight Scotch. A wonderful straight Scotch, at that. I like this one best on the rocks, with just a splash to dilute the proof slightly, but if you're patient enough to let it breathe awhile, it's a fantastic experience neat. At $68, Aberlour a'bunadh is more expensive than a lot of single malts, but less so than than many other special bottlings, and considered on a proof basis---since most will choose to dilute it, it takes less and lasts longer---works out to be quite competitive. Highly recommended. If you like sherried Speysides, this one will be a revelation. In part it was to feed my love of Single Malts with tours of several distillery. In the village of Pitlochry we visited Edradour. Edradour is the smallest distillery in Scotland. There are only three employees, and all of the whiskeys are hand crafted. The water flows down a river through the distillery and the barley has come from the surrounding valleys for over 100 years. The copper still is small, by comparison to larger distilleries, but the smaller copper tubing gives it a stronger, more distinct smokiness. Fermentation is carried out entirely by hand. The nose of the stillman is what determines the readiness of the whiskey. Edradour makes 75000 liters per year -- which in comparison is just one day's run of Glenfiddich's single malts. The 10 year old is put aside in Oak casks from the south of France - some have had sherry, some not. The 11 year old Cask conditioned single malt is beyond comparison. It's smoky, nutty, very smooth, going past the palate with only a hint of it's distinctiveness. When it hits the back of the tongue and to the throat you know you've tasted a one of a kind single malt. I've tried a couple of dozen single malts. Nothing is as distinct as Edradour's 11 year old Straight From the Cask. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=102899&title=edradour-straight-from-the-cask-11-years-old&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=102899&title=edradour-straight-from-the-cask-11-years-old&cat=66 Tue, 11 Aug 2009 15:32:37 -0600 Edradour Signatory 10 years cask conditioned

by: **Bingo_Bob**

Description: Let me first give the three helpful tips for selecting a great scottish whiskey. You should look for a bottle that fits these guidelines: 1) single malt 2) un-chill-filtered 3) no color added With this, the full unrestricted nose and palate, as anticipated by the master distiller, is thereby preserved and perfectly transfered from cask to bottle. These points layout the traditional style of making fine scottish whisky. Most large bottling companies do not follow these guidelines. A pure single malt may sometimes acquire a slight harmless cloudy haze, which can appear and disappear with temperature changes. To keep this from happening, large commercial distilleries and bottling companies will add amber coloring and chillfilter the malt while bottling. This is done for pure esthetics and is widely regarded to take away quite a lot from the character of the malt. As you acquire a taste for fine whisky you may likely note that a 10 year old malt of traditionally bottled whisky will have much more flavor than a 25 year old bottle of the more common top name brands. And this is where these tips come to heart: price generally goes up with age. So selecting a properly bottled whisky will not only provide you with a better experience for your palate, but also your wallet. The general price range for a bottle of whisky is about $20 to... well the highest I have personally seen was $75,000 but I wouldn't be shocked to learn of more expensive bottles. Generally, good stuff can start to be found around $40, in my humble opinion, but prices quickly start to get into the $100s and above. With this in mind, I would like to recommend a very well valued traditional whisky: Edradour Signatory 10 years - bottled by Signatory and distilled by Edradour, the smallest distillery in Scotland tucked away in the the massively beautiful southern highlands. (side note: if you are ever in Scotland, near Pitlochry, the Edradour distillery is known you give very nice tours) Price: The Edradour Signatory 10 years is an excellent value. Depending on where you get it (and what the $/£ exchange rate is), look to spend $50-70 for a 750ml bottle. Again, this is a great price for what you are getting. It is an excellent malt, traditionally bottled: un-chillfiltered, no color added, and an extra tangy 46% ABV. Let us not forget, the bottle is personally labeled with bottle number, cask number, and bottling date - in real, actual hand writing (see picture). Cask: Sherry Color: As the pictures show, the malt captures a rich warm amber character in the bottle. In the glass it transforms to a soothing amber-bronze. Nose: I am too much of a novice to do this justice with my tumbler but allow me to entertain smoky, nutty, spicy, with hint of sherry. Palate: Smooth, creamy, sweet nuts, malty, full body This is personally my favorite part. With the cup to my mouth, I like to let the whisky touch my lips and slowly seep though. The first sip gives an especially nice invigorating sensation. For the following sips I prefer to let the dram set in the mouth, forgetting about time, and slowly letting the finish settle in. Finish: The finish is really quite enjoyable as well: mellow, warming, calming ... just sit back, get comfortable, and enter your cocoon of awareness. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=102500&title=edradour-signatory-10-years-cask-conditioned&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=102500&title=edradour-signatory-10-years-cask-conditioned&cat=66 Sat, 08 Aug 2009 17:35:05 -0600 Bushmills 10 year old.

by: Kenno

Description: Bushmills 10yo is my go to drink. This whiskey has won a few awards and New York times voted it their best in 2006. Packaging is great and has a historic feel to it and the bottle is just the right shape and size. Once opened a lovely aroma is noticed, not too sweet with vanilla, sherry, bourbon and rum. Tasting notes are just as lovely as the aroma with vanilla, christmas cake, fudge, bourbon and sherry. Fairly complex with a lot of flavors and a slightly smooth oily texture finishing slightly dry and warm in the mouth with no acid aftertaste. As far as price is concerned it is the best bang for your buck. Cheap but tastes much more expensive. I really don't see the need to spend big dollars on whiskey/scotch when you can have this beauty. A nice way to finish off a meal or to have as a night cap/caps. An easy drinking Whiskey that will have you singing all night to Danny Boy! Ps, Hope it qualifies as a scotch cause I want to win one of those B&B glasses. I think the glass will better help me with my dosage, otherwise I'll have to keep drinking it (hickup) straight out of the bottle? http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=102106&title=bushmills-10-year-old&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=102106&title=bushmills-10-year-old&cat=66 Thu, 06 Aug 2009 02:11:40 -0600 Glenfiddich 15

by: ginantonix

Description: When the contest for the Glencairn glasses was announced, I decided it was finally time to submit a whisky review to the good old B&B. I also knew that the first one I wanted to review was…. Glenfiddich 15. Now I know what you are thinking, ‘That old stuff? That’s what I pour on my Cheerios.’ (Come on, admit it, I can’t be the only one.) Glenfiddich is what many of us cut our single malt teeth on, the single malt Scotch that every liquor store will have available even if it’s the only one. It is ubiquitous, and familiarity breeds contempt. It’s like the spouse of thirty years that doesn’t seem as exciting as all of the young, pretty girls that seem to be everywhere, sporting special finishes and such. And that’s a shame, because Glenfiddich is a damn good whisky. There is a lot of history behind the brand, but what is most important to me is that the single malt revolution was essentially created by Glenfiddich. Not so very long ago, drinking Scotch whisky meant drinking a blend. Worried about losing their influence and market with the big blending houses, Wm. Grant and Sons decided to market Glenfiddich as a single malt. Without this move, many more of the smaller distilleries that have since found a loyal market as single malts would certainly have eventually closed. I, and every other single malt enthusiast, owe them a great deal of gratitude for this alone. But Glenfiddich 15 is a superb malt in its own right. The colour is a rich amber, perhaps suspiciously so. A few long, slim legs form quickly, but with patience a string of pearls follows. There is clearly some substance here, despite the unfortunate chill-filtering. The nose is rather complex. The first sniffs easily reveal characteristic citrus and fruity notes; lemon, peach, melons, ripe pears. Explore deeper, however: cinnamon, nutmeg, mint, raisins, a hint of allspice, and some salt. Like approaching the Spice Islands from downwind. The first impression of the palate is sweetness and light. Definitely not a harsh or biting whisky, the mouthfeel is like silk, but very intense. Barley sugar, mint and cinnamon again, orange and dried fruits, plus a little grassiness. The flavour is very consistent with what was promised on the nose. The finish is surprisingly long and warm. There is a some dryness from the wood, and strawberries with cream. Glenfiddich is often described as a ‘beginner’s Scotch,’ and that’s very true. It is approachable and non-threatening, and a great introduction to single malts. But I would invite you to put aside your pre-conceived notions and taste it with a fresh perspective, and fall in love all over again. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101789&title=glenfiddich-15&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101789&title=glenfiddich-15&cat=66 Mon, 03 Aug 2009 23:28:17 -0600 Bowmore Single Malt 34 Year 1971 Edition

by: Vvalters

Description: I will preface my review by stating I am in no way a Scotch expert, though I did get quite an education on my last trip to Scotland. That's where I found this Bowmore Single Malt 34 Year 1971 Edition. I was at Deacon Brodie's Tavern in Edinburgh, along the Royal Mile, one of my required stops when I'm in the neighborhood. The bartender told me I was in for a treat and he was right. The dram he put before me was going to be the best Scotch I ever drank in my life. But, I'm getting a little ahead of myself. This stuff is expensive. The bartender said there were less than 1000 bottles of this single malt ever made. Bowmore, if I remember correctly, is the oldest distillery on the Island of Islay. This Scotch itself has a beautiful deep rich caramel color. The aroma has hints of sweet cinnamon and fruits with of course the smokiness which is customary to the Islay region. This scotch has some really nice legs too. Thick and slow to flow. The smokiness and the caramel and cinnamon arrest your nose before you take your first sip. When you do taste; the robust oak smokiness really comes through along with some underlying fruit tones and what my bartender helped me to identify as a very subtle peat. It blew me away and was worth every penny. I just closed my eyes and savored each sip of this Scotch. It was like nothing I've ever tasted before or since. It was the best Scotch I've ever had. If you ever come across a Bowmore Single Malt 34 Year 1971 Edition Scotch, you absolutely must get it, without hesitation. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101739&title=bowmore-single-malt-34-year-1971-edition&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101739&title=bowmore-single-malt-34-year-1971-edition&cat=66 Mon, 03 Aug 2009 17:49:54 -0600 The Macallan 12 Year Single Malt Scotch

by: withoutink

Description: The Macallan 12 Year Single Malt Scotch --This is a review I posted on my website on: May 16, 2007 well, i have never really been a big drinker. ok, once a long time ago… in hawaii, while in the military there was that one time. but that's it i promise. i digress… last weekend my wife and i went to a new wine shop to buy her mom a mothers day gift. this place was crazy, it was a mega liquor store. they had probably the biggest selection of wine i have every seen. Total Wine & More. they say they carry 8,000 wines – 2,000 spirits & 1,000 beers. yup, this place was insane. i don’t really drink wine, but i had to check the selection out. it was like walking into a large named brand grocery store, but one that only [for the most part] sells wine, liquor & beer. as i walked the isles, i was amazed with each glance i took down each new isle. i couldn’t believe the size of this place. finally i stumbled upon the spirits section – an area that i have a slight amount of knowledge about. it just so happens, i ended up staring right at the single malt scotches. funny thing is i have been meaning to try a scotch for a while now. [sub story = i have to admit i have never bought/owned a bottle of scotch before. so i really had no idea what i was looking for at all. no idea of what brand may be best.] a friend from work recommended that i try Lagavulin a [16 year old] single malt scotch. now im not a cheap guy, but i saw the price tag – $75. i thought, since i am not a big scotch drinker… [i've only had various scotches maybe a dozen or so times.] i might want to save the cash till i know i REALLY like scotch. hey maybe i might even want to try a glass of the stuff before i drop $75. so, i ended up speaking to the store manager. i asked him if he liked scotch and maybe had a recommendation of what i should try – say in the $30-$45 range. he noted that his favorite spirits were scotch followed closely by bourbon. he pointed out the blends and single malts, explained some of the history of scotch and pointed to a couple in my price range. his best recommendation was to try The Macallan 12 year single malt scotch. he said it’s probably one of the best scotches you can get in my price range. he also recommended that if i hadn’t experienced many scotches before that this one is a nice place to start. smooth, not too smokey or peaty. i grabbed a bottle. [in the back of my mind i wished really hard that i hadn't made a mistake, and instead should have bought a bottle of good ole Gentleman Jack.] meanwhile my wife scurried off to find an appropriate gift for her mom. since she saw i was bitten by the scotch talk bug. later in the evening. i poured myself a small amount of The Macallan 12 year old single malt scotch. hold on a second. i just noticed i am writing a post about scotch without any! [short intermission - while i pour a glass] ok, sorry about that… i am back now. well, right here before me in a small old fashioned glass there is a quarter cup of beautifully hued sort of amber colored scotch. the nose of the scotch – i will be honest i have no idea what it smells like. people say oak, spice, vanilla – but i got nothing. which is odd since i have a super sensitive sniffer. what i actually smell is a spicy [maybe woodsy] yet almost sweet vaporous drink. now even though i don’t drink a lot of this stuff, i do know how it should be enjoyed – neat in a rocks glass. no water. nothing. it should be savored – i was told once long ago. a quarter cup of a nice scotch should take 30-40 mins to enjoy. so, being the the kind of guy who wants to try it the way it should be. i did just that. poured about one quarter cup in to a clear rocks glass – neat. i swirled the drink in its glass – waiting for some sort of magic to happen. i felt just as i did when i was 11 while playing with my chemistry set. i swirled and sniffed. swirled and sniffed. i almost wanted to say some sort of incantation, but i refrained. i let the drink sit for a moment before taking my fist sip. as i grabbed the glass i looked at it one last time. its golden amber liquid swirling about the glass. finally i brought the glass to my lips, tilted it ever so slightly. what seemed like only a couple drops of scotch hit my lips and i felt a slightly cool burn. as the liquid hit my tongue it took a second… then a pop. the scotch seemed to bloom in my mouth. at first it was sweet – then it almost felt as though it vaporized within my mouth – as it exploded into a spicy sensation – tingling my taste buds. it finished off with a slightly sweet taste. while thats how it actually did taste/feel to me. honestly, i wasn’t sure i liked it – that explosion of spicy vapor almost seemed too much for me. so i waited a bit then i took another sip. hmm… i was thinking crap there goes $40 and thank heavens it wasn’t $75. funny thing is, if i didn’t like it so much. why am i drinking it now, sipping it at this very moment. over the past few nights i have had maybe two more of those quarter cup or less glasses. each time growing slightly fonder of the sensations. this stuff is much different than the whisky and bourbons i drink. it reminds me of when i first experienced beer, when i was young and had my first couple beers – i was like wtf?! i am not sure i can do this. then slowly i became appreciative to the tastes and complexities of a nice well rounded beer [did i actually say well rounded beer?]. so, what the heck. i might as well see if maybe its my newbie-ish experiences to scotch… maybe its just too strong for me. maybe i should try it with an ice cube. i have no idea. but for some reason. its starting to make me feel warm inside and not in a drunk or buzzed sort of way. maybe there is hope for me yet… -- Just a quick side note, I ended up loving the bottle =) http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101494&title=the-macallan-12-year-single-malt-scotch&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101494&title=the-macallan-12-year-single-malt-scotch&cat=66 Sat, 01 Aug 2009 18:38:38 -0600 Unicum by Zwack

by: Fortitudo Dei

Description: There is a long tradition in Continental Europe of alcoholic bitters. Formerly marketed as “tonics”, these are now generally sold as digestifs but are often simply enjoyed whenever the occasion demands. Only a few of the dozens of the bitters produced in Europe make their way outside of their country of origin. Of those that are exported outside of Europe, Jägermeister and Underberg (both from Germany) are probably the best known but are comparatively mild in flavour. Fernet-Branca from Italy is another example which has a bit more bite and is also commonly available. Eclipsing these is Unicum by Zwack from Hungary made to a recipe dating from the late 1700s. There are no half-measures with Unicum – it is a drink that you will either love or detest (and as you can tell from my rankings I’m firmly in the “love” camp). There is nothing subtle about the taste of Unicum – it simply assaults your taste and olfactory senses. I’m also convinced that unless you have grown up with bitters from a younger age, it takes a certain maturity in one’s taste buds to enjoy Unicum - so much so that I suspect that anyone under the age of 30 will probably gag at taking the smallest sip of the drink (Search for “Unicum” on YouTube for videos of “daring” youth doing just this). However once you have reached a certain age, chances are much higher that you will understand why it has such a cult following in Hungary where it is regarded as that county’s national drink. If you enjoy sharp flavours of foods such as olives or rollmops, you stand a better chance of enjoying Unicum. So what does it taste like? Yes it is bitter, but there is also a huge underlying range of complex herbal flavours that envelop the tongue and nasal passages. An image that goes through my mind when ever I drink Unicum is that it tastes like a forest in summer with a mixture of herbal and mossy scents and aromas. Like many such bitters, the recipe is a closely guarded secret known only to the Zwack family. How to drink it? My personal preference is to keep the bottle in the fridge and to drink it ice-cold in small shot glasses. The drink is almost jet-black and it has a distinctive oily texture. It works well as a beer chaser, but I can’t imagine wanting to mix it down with anything. The bottle is also very distinctive being a glass orb which when full it looks uncannily like a classic anarchist’s bomb as drawn by generations of cartoonists and animators. I haven’t commented on its price or value as I imagine this will vary greatly from country to country. Unless you are visiting Hungary, you will need to track it down in a specialty liquor outlet. Note that this is a different drink from the one marketed simply as "Zwack" (formerly "Unicum Next") in parts of North America. "Zwack" is more like a super-mild version of Unicum more akin to Jägermeister and designed to appeal to standard American taste-buds. Seek out the real thing. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101108&title=unicum-by-zwack&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=101108&title=unicum-by-zwack&cat=66 Wed, 29 Jul 2009 16:37:15 -0600 Finlaggan Old Reserve Islay Single-malt Scotch

by: Kyle Hyde

Description: Finlaggan Old Reserve costs 16.99 at trader joe's. I've heard it rumored that it's actually a younger Lagavulin, but I don't know for certain if it's true. It is smoky, peaty, has rough edges, and definitely medicinal. There is absolutely no doubting that it is an Islay malt. My only complaint is that the smell is VERY strong. The smell lingers for a long time. It's a good smell, but it is more medicinal smelling than say Laphroig. Overall, the scotch I drink the most because I can't afford to drink the other Islay malts every night. This has a lovely smooth character that goes down easy. First notes are like butterscotch/sherry and bourbon then leads to a nice warm feeling with a hint of bourbon to finish it off. Long lasting with a flavour to savour. This is an all year round drink that can be sipped or slammed down. No acidy taste or reflux with this gem. You can relax with this beauty and keep looking forward to the next glass. To me it beats Lag 16, talisker 10 and hp12. The whole Bushmills range is good value but this one is a class above. You won't regret it and you certainly won't want to mix it with anything as the flavour is great on it's own. Really really nice. Cognacs at twice/three times the price don't stand a chance to this beauty along with Laphroaig Quater Cask. Feels like I'm drinking Earth, nice peatyness without the acid/burn taste. Goes down beautifully all the way to my belly button. This has a burnt earth/coal/peat/scottish ocean taste at the start that leads to a nice warm long finish with a hint of peat to round things off. Funnily enough it makes me feel part of the earth when I drink it. Don't be put off by my tasting notes, you gotta try it to understand it. A lovely drink for a cold and rainy night next to the fire place. You can keep your overpriced cognacs and I'll keep this. A lot of the other Scotch's stay in my stomach but this one goes down great. A very relaxing drink and better than the Laph 10yo and 10yo cask strength. Also better than Lag16, hp12 and talisker 10 to name a few. I've had plenty drinks and this along with Bushmills 16yo are my top picks so far. Try it and enjoy, you won't regret it. . When farmer/distiller Robert Haig was summoned before the church elders in 1655 for operating his still on the Sabbath (Sunday), this marked the earliest documented reference to a distillery company still operating today. The art and craft of whisky distilling were passed down through generations of the Haig family dynasty, and Robert`s descendants operated distilleries in Scotland, England and Ireland. One of them, John Haig, opened a distillery in 1824 at Cameronbridge in the fertile and historical Kingdom of Fife, which lies across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh. Around 1870, his son John was the first Haig to use the newly developed practice of blending. The deep understanding of product and their long tradition of whisky making was realized, to perfection, in the early 1890s with the creation of Pinch. This deluxe blend of exceptional distinction is found in the world`s most exclusive bars and elegant homes, enjoyed by those who appreciate rare quality. Pinch is the perfect international companion when friends meet in smart surroundings. In recognition of the consistent high quality of Pinch, the whisky was awarded a gold medal in 1987 in the Deluxe blended whisky category of the International Wine and Spirit competition. Pinch is distinguished even further by its famous triangular, dimpled bottle wrapped in wire net. (The blend is known as The Dimple in markets outside the United States.) The whisky has been bottled in this attractive container since its creation, with the hand-applied wire mesh originally designed to prevent the cork from coming out during export shipments through rough seas. The Pinch `decanter,` after the precious contents have been enjoyed, has been put to decorative use around the world. To protect its exclusive use, the Pinch bottle was the first bottle to be patented in the United States, in 1958. It is a fitting and unique container for a whisky that has no equals. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=60693&title=pinch-scotch-wisket-15-years&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=60693&title=pinch-scotch-wisket-15-years&cat=66 Fri, 03 Oct 2008 11:30:11 -0600 McClard's Bar-B-Q

by: sol92258

Description: This is the mostest bestest Bar-B-Q I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. And they (the ribs) have bumper stickers that say "My food group tastes much more awesomer than your food group"...well, maybe not, but they could. My wife and I recently went to Hot Springs for our 10 year anniversary, part of the deal was she gets dinner on the Belle, I get dinner at McClard's. If you're ever in Hot Springs, I highly recommend it, just wear clothes you A) aren't wearing to church soon, B) don't mind relegating to yard work, and C) don't mind smelling like BBQ sauce for a few weeks (because you won't wash it, just so you can enjoy the aroma longer). If you're near the area, pick some up. Or you can order from their website, which I'll be doing now that I know that. Did I mention this stuff is awesome?!?! http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=59784&title=mcclard-s-bar-b-q&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=59784&title=mcclard-s-bar-b-q&cat=66 Fri, 26 Sep 2008 09:02:27 -0600 Slivovitz Plum Brandy

by: bokaba

Description: Slivovitz is really strong, has poor flavor, and burns like hell. Price: These can be had for $40 - $60 a box online. I believe they are a Cigars International house brand. Quality: Constructed well. The wrapper is dark and oily and veins are sparse and small. I've experienced zero burn issues and the draw is on the resistant side of perfect. Value: These are a value whether you buy them outright at CI prices or try your luck at their auction site, Cigarbid.com. Truly a well crafted stick and a decent price. Flavor: Unique! Upon initial light up, I immediately get the standard espresso and cocoa flavors, but for a fleeting moment I got something I've never picked up before in any cigar: jalapeno pepper! :w00t: After getting into the first third a bit, the 'A' settles into a nice, rich, almost swampy flavor. Sounds strange, but it was wonderful. I imagine it's what eating a s'more with a little peat or moist top soil would taste like. Wonderful and disturbing all at once. Aroma: The aroma was thick and rich both in passive and direct inhalation. To elaborate, passive being the surrounding smoke and direct being a tiny bit of smoke taken through the nose briefly as the smoke is expelled gently from the mouth. Similar notes of wood, toasted hazelnuts, and dry cocoa powder were experienced. Packaging: The presentation of these cigars is beautiful. A stark brown Costa Rican Maduro wrapper set against a striking black and gold band and nestled into a Spanish cedar sleeve. All in all, this is a recommended addition to anyone's humidor. Maduro lovers will marvel in it's unique flavors compared to some of the sweeter or spicier maduros and those less accustomed to the maduro will marvel in its downright tastiness. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=57549&title=5-vegas-a&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=57549&title=5-vegas-a&cat=66 Mon, 01 Sep 2008 07:56:42 -0600 Nancy Boy Room Spray

by: THECHEBB

Description: Spritz this in any place (car, room, closet) that needs a little "refreshing" and you will be pleasantly surprised with an aroma that is outta this world. While I purchased the Signature Scent based on their wondeful shaving cream, I'm sure their other aromas are of the same high caliber. Available in the following scents: SIGNATURE a fresh clean mix of rosemary, lavender & peppermint. CITRUS pink grapefruit, lemon and bergamot SWEETGRASS lemon, lemongrass, cedar and rose geranium SPA eucalyptus, lemon and mint TEA ROSE rosewood and green tea 10 on the packaging, clean & simple as long as it keeps the cost of the product down, hell I'd be happy with label drawn with crayons on construction paper.:em2300: http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=53125&title=nancy-boy-room-spray&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=53125&title=nancy-boy-room-spray&cat=66 Sat, 19 Jul 2008 07:05:58 -0600 'Punch' Cigar

by: boingk

Description: Looking for a special occasion cigar at a reaonsable price? Well, this might just be for you. Starting out, its presented in a beautiful silver tube with a sliver of oak surrounding the inside. The overall presentation is of quality, and oozes class to those uninitiated with the upper echelons of the cigar world. The cigar itself is heavy and rather moist, well rolled and quite pleasantly aromatic. Although setting me back $15 for the single, this may vary elsewhere [I'm in Australia]. I found it quite reasonable compared to others on offer, but still a fair bit more than some. A full-sized, thick cigar, this will be something that you'll have on the rear balcony at sunset with a good scotch or even perhaps a pallate-cleansing lager or two. The aroma is deep and penetrating, yet smooth and luxuriant. The flavour follows, and although strong is very smooth like the aroma. I would say the oak tube lining has a definite impact upon this cigar. Overall, I'd rate this as either a very exxy standard or a special occaision smoker. I'd be partial to the latter, as it really is a bit much for the single to be a regular thing. Having said that, something of this standard would be excellent to have more than a few times a year! http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=47537&title=punch-cigar&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=47537&title=punch-cigar&cat=66 Thu, 22 May 2008 21:59:07 -0600 Havana Club Anejo Especial

by: stymph

Description: I am a big fan of rum, in all shapes and varieties, but the anejo especial put almost every other rum in my collection to shame. It is without doubt the finest rum I've ever laid my hands on. It might be a local thing, but I found it to be rather pricey compared to most other rums of similar stature. The flavour is not as sugary as some rums tends to be, also it is just incredibly smooth, I can not emphasise that point enough, definitely a rum of choice for me. http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=46814&title=havana-club-anejo-especial&cat=66 http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=46814&title=havana-club-anejo-especial&cat=66 Wed, 14 May 2008 19:38:54 -0600 Redbreast Pure Pot Still Irish Whiskey

by: Laughing Lion

Description: Well, gentlemen, I won't get into a big long shopping list of various notes, tastes, hints, and overtones, but I will tell you this: I have been drinking single malts for many a year, and have tried all the classics you might care to mention... None of them compare to this lovely Irish sipping whiskey. It is subtle, aromatic, and smooth beyond compare. It doesn't have the huge peat aroma and taste of Islay malts, but for my money it is the tipple of choice. As an added bonus, it has taken my wife from "Eww - get that stuff away from me!" to "Oh, God - can I have another sip of that? It's wonderful!" Anything that can get my lovely lover drinking neat whiskey - against all expectations - deserves double points for me!
