There are some good suggestions here. Aside from what has been mentioned, my (local) < $40 favorites include: Evan Williams Single Barrell, Bulleit (including and especially the Rye), Weller Special Reserve (If you can find it), and 1792.

Well, the Mrs. took the decision out of my hands, got me a bottle of Jim Beam Double Oaked as a Christmas gift. It is great. I can't wait to continue this journey of trying the different bourbons out there. P

Have you tried George Dickel white? It's a great Tennesse sipping whiskey and one of the best "Bang for your Buck" whiskeys out there.

Here in Pennsylvania we have to special order the Dickel white label "12". Not stocked in store, they only stock the Dickel Rye. Last time I was in New Jersey, I stopped at a liquor store and got a handle of Dickel white for <$50
