Decades ago I read as much Junichiro Tanizaki as I could find and I have always remembered the proverb that inspired his book "Some Prefer Nettles".

Do you know the date of this quote? I wonder if he got that from Yeats or Yeats got it from him. Here's what Yeats wrote in The Second Coming and it was published in The Dial in 1920:
